details of new at 6:00 p.m. wbal-tv 11 news begun >> another hot race taking place in baltimore county. there are three candidates. the excitement around two members of the county council and have battled it out in the television ads. debra wiener joins us live in pikesville with a closer look at that race. >> supporters will gather here in pikesville. joe's will gather in the parks bill. they say they feel good. the board felt the people say they feel caught -- cautiously optimistic. their styles could not appear more different. consider a few weeks ago. i took an elevator to interview them. the farmer and the lawyer who worked together side by side for years are caught up in a campaign that some call ugly and aggressive. >> he had to vote in a white t- shirt today because of laws for

having campaigned promotions. when he came out, he put on his collared shirt back on. it is a matter of the voters for baltimore county to decide whether they want to move forward with positive leadership as we move in the future to make his catch a better place for all of us. his opponent and colleague voted back on september 3rd joining the early voter crowd. >> we will pump everyone up and we are all excited, right? >> he told us on sunday he was surviving these final days on coffee and read all. that same day, bartenfelder said he was winding down. they are fighting it out for the job left open by jim smith.

they have this in common today. they both have been working the polls all day all across the county. later today, kamenetz is expected to hear. he has celebrated many a victory here hoping to celebrate again tonight. bartenfelder open to the same thing in pikesville. >> of voters could not say the weather kept them from the polls. today with a picture-perfect. add in the a couple of all the contested races and you would expect a big turnout. we're live now in the northwest baltimore. lisa, is that the case? good numbers of the polls today? >> statewide, no major problems at the polls. according to the state board of election, turnout across the state has been light. >> yes, it is light. very light so far. >> that was the story around baltimore city.

by 9:00 a.m., fewer than 6000 people had turned out to vote in the first two hours the polls were open. >> there were a lot of people that i think will be interested in the general election. >> it will be later on, probably in the afternoon and evening. >> that was the hope. by 11:00 a.m., things had improved but only slightly. a little more than 50,000 voters. baltimore city election director jones called this disappointing considering the number of hot the contested races. >> i would think more people would be out voting. that is what makes this unbelievable to me. this gives me the impression that there is a "no care" attitude. >> is a slow but steady. what's everyone comes out in november. >> i did not even know.

wbaltv.com. >> we have an update to breaking news we told you about at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. police say a man shot in baltimore died from his injuries. the victim was found just blocks from the baltimore county line. he died just after 7:00 p.m. last night at johns hopkins bayview. please have not released his name and the search continues for his attacker. meanwhile, in carroll county, detectives have charged a 22- year-old man with stabbing this man to death. sheriff deputies say 26-year- old jeremiad demario was found around 10:00 p.m. last night on the staircase outside his apartment. demario was stabbed in the chest. >> it seemed like the best way to describe weather today is pretty comfortable.

>> a lawsuit over bedbugs? that is how serious the bedbug problem has become. >> for many it is an embarrassing problem and one woman is suing her apartment complex. rob roblin has the details. >> amber lives and an apartment here and has been here for about one year. in 2009, she started a chain and found that bugs. they suck your blood when they bite. daniel but he says her client has permanent scars. >> the damage is not only the fact she has these bikes that were extremely itchy and she developed scarring which is still visible today, over one year after being bitten, she may have to have some kind of

procedure, laser surgery or something to remove the scarring on her arms. >> the lawsuit on behalf of his client against these briarcliff apartments over bedbugs in the apartment was filed on september 1st. >> there is something about bedbug that is especially disturbing. they invade your bed when you are sleeping. they crawl over your body and suck your blood. it is more than a mere annoyance. she is asking for damages for having been suggest -- subjected to bedbugs. this was probably for about a seven month period. his client does not want to talk on camera because this issue is embarrassing. briarcliff apartments east would not comment on the lawsuit. amber's attorney says dexter many years were called in and treated her apartment.

when ken harris was killed. they are on trial for the murder of ken harris. here or what may have been his last words. fearing for his own life and where when happened to his friends, he told the jurors he followed with the brokers said. he testified that in the early morning hours of the no. 28, 2008, former city councilman ken harris came in saying he needed to use the restroom. he went to introduce covington to a woman he had in the car. and man pointed a gun directly at his head and began making demands saying, "you know what this is. get the expletive back in the building before i bow your expletive head off."

according to prosecutors, he was followed and shot as he tried to drive away. as he was being forced into the bar with a gun at the back of his head, he heard a shot and hoped that they messed. covington replied that he saw the gun. >> it was an emotional testimony. no one can imagine what they went through. this is a terrible situation. >> when you see them come in the bar, he is walking in there is a person behind him. you never see the third person or they never go near him. they will never be able to identify. he was able to identify a bandanna tied around the back of the face and a hat. there is no identification. >> the identified as skeleton-

detained in iran has been reunited with her mother. here is video from the reunion. a.c.t. $500,000 bail was posted. president obama has stated they will show the same compassion to those who have been detained for more than one year. iran says they're not planning to release the others. the man accused of trying to detonate a plane has fired his legal team. he fired his court-appointed lawyers on monday and asked the judge if he could plead guilty to some of the charges against him. the judge reluctantly agreed and will now appoint new judges. he is originally from nigeria and is accused of trying to ignite a bomb song into his underwear on christmas day on a flight from amsterdam to detroit. >> in tonight's education alert,

a record number of students going to community college. what is driving those numbers? education reporter tim tooten joins us with more on the story. >> a number of reasons why the community colleges in the baltimore county are going through a growth spurt. at the top of that list may very well be the economy. most students still see a college education as a way to land a job, especially in a tough economy. in the baltimore county, more of them are showing up at community colleges. >> i came here to play soccer and get the easy stuff added the way. >> based on enrollment figures just doubt, more than 26,000 students signed up for class's this fall which is a 10% increase. there has been a steady growth here where enrollment is up 13%. students will be among the first to tell you you're not surprised

humidity, and 77-82 with a west breeze tomorrow. the tropics are very stormy, but thankfully the storms right now are far from land. they may -- that may change as this monster here from a hurricane igor is moving closer. right around the eye, when their estimated at 145 miles per hour. julia has become a hurricane with signs of strengthening. it is trying to make its way up to the bermuda. . 145 mile per wins with igor. a category four storm will be teetering almost up to category five levels. wind speeds up above 155 miles per hour will make it a category five. it is forecasted to be near bermuda sometime over the weekend. still a major hurricane with 150 mile per hour winds. although the center of the storm
