>> i was in my work area and my boss came running in and told me to stay put because there is a guy running around with a gun. >> it was my first time for anything like this. >> absolutely terrifying moments after a man with a gun and opened fire on a doctor inside johns hopkins hospital. it is one of the world's premier institutions, but today, security measures are being called into question after amend being briefed on his mother's condition pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the doctor. it is a sprawling campus with more than 40 billings, but the nelson building became a crime scene today. >> we have learned that the doctor, who was shot in the upper abdomen, is in stable condition. the hopkins medical campus is getting back to some normalcy to night after a day the hospital

will never forget. at one of the best hospitals in the world, one of the worst things happen. >> there were snipers out in front. we were all locked down. >> a host of police, fire, and swat team member swarmed johns hopkins hospital around 11:00 thursday morning. a man police initially a identified as warren davis was discussing his mother's medical condition with her doctor on the eighth four of the nelson building. for some reason, davis gets upset, pulls out a gun and shoots the doctor, later identified as david cohen. >> the doctor collapsed just outside the doorway of the room. mr. davis was last seen running into the room, brandishing a handgun in the direction of his mother, who was confined to the dead. >> we later learned warren davis is an alias. the gunman's real name is paul

hopkins security officials promised to take a second look at it security procedures. as for why the shooting happened, it is believed that paul pardus was emotionally distraught and overwhelmed by his mother's condition. >> with more than 30,000 employees, johns hopkins medicine is among the state's largest employers, certainly the largest private employer in baltimore city. many of the employees were evacuated, and once they learned of the news, it came as quite a shock. >> to see a lot of police cars, security guards just running around frantic, it was kind of chaotic, nobody knowing what was going on. eventually, they started walking horse, telling people they could not get in or out -- a started blocking doors. >> i would never expect this, because this hospital is well secured and protected.

it is just crazy and ridiculous for something like this to happen. >> i feel like i am in a movie. >> the doctor is expected to survive his gunshot wound. we are learning more tonight about both dr. david cohen and his attacker. we continue our team coverage, live with new details. >> dr. david cohen underwent several hours of surgery this afternoon, and as you said, he is expected to make a for recovery. he is 45 years old and has been in the medical field for nearly 20 years. dr. david cohen has been a licensed physician since 1995, specializing in orthopedic and spine surgery at johns hopkins hospital. according to the hospitals website, he went to medical school at rochester university and did his postgraduate work at johns hopkins. he was rushed to surgery and operated on for at least five hours.

assaulted a woman. police released a composite sketch of one of the suspects. the attack happened around 2:30 a.m. on saturday. that is when the victim said she was dragged into the woods and sexually assaulted. if you have any information on this case or who the suspect may be, you are urged to call anne arundel county police. tonight, two people are in custody, accused of holding a woman against her will for nearly a year. they are charged with attempted murder, assault, and false imprisonment. police say on august 25, to people picked up the victim in baltimore city after seeing her condition. before police could talk to her, she slipped into a coma. >> on september 9, the victim "

from a coma and was able to talk to police investigators. she told investigators that for the past year that she had been held captive in an apartment and that she had been beaten over that time by the suspects in this case. >> police say the suspects kept the woman locked inside a bathroom at home in the 100 block of burberry drive and was only given food to reach three times a week. her one-year-old child was being raised by one of the suspects. detectives say her entries are extensive. >> the victim suffered from multiple injuries, everything from her eyes being injured to her ribs being injured, to having a fracture tailbone, to having multiple bruises and scratches and cuts, including her upper lip being damaged.

>> police said the suspects were using the victims bankcard to collect her social security money. they are currently being held without bail. the victim is in critical condition, and her child is in hands of social services. police are searching for anyone who may have additional information in this case. you are urged to contact baltimore county police. the search is over for a man who escaped police custody with his pregnant girlfriend. paul palme and geena distefano were arrested about 40 miles south of seattle. police said that, made up -- police said that palmer made up a medical emergency to break free. he now faces additional charges. a man who police accused of fleeing the scene of an arm robbery in northeast baltimore

is now in custody. authorities say two men held up the pharmacy at a shopping center yesterday. desiccators a police arrived on the scene after the guard reportedly fired several shots at the armed suspect. police said they recovered one weapon. the names of the suspects have not been released. two men behind bars, accused of stealing $3.5 million worth of metals. police arrested james robinson and thomas jefferson connected with the commercial burglary last week. police say the men stole more than 500 tons of nickel and chrome, --, used to make stainless steel. in tonight's commitment 2010 coverage, the second ad has been released in total road map to 2020.

it was described as the former governor's tenure vision for the state. it was a busy day at the city's board of elections. workers were counting absentee ballots. the latest numbers show gregg bernstein hold his lead on patricia jessamy, but there is still not clear winner in the race for city state's attorney. jayne miller has more. >> there were no hanging chats, but certainly enough lawyers in the room to bring to mind bush vs. gore. more than 1600 absentee ballots in the city state's attorney's race. at jessamy camp is trying to overcome challenger gregg bernstein lead in the race. they only lost ground with the absentee count. >> we have 795 bernstein, jessamy 727. bernstein had increased his lead when it was finished.

forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> the radar is switched over to lightning mode. you can see a number of lightning strikes in our area at this hour, coming across western maryland towards hagerstown. they were associated with a second batch of showers and storms. this is the line of storms that was kicking of some nasty storms over in eastern ohio. there are some mornings now in western maryland for parts of frederick county. gusty winds are possible and of course that dangerous lightning associated with a cluster of storms as well. you can expect one last little shot of some thunder and heavy downpours as the storms cut across the baltimore metro area in the next hour or so. we have not had a whole bunch of rain at bwi marshall, but it was a warm enough day to get these thunderstorms popping up into the mid 80's in most spots

whence on the day at the northwest at 5-10 knots. a couple of lingering showers, only 65 for the high, and if you are heading for western maryland, the rest of the weekend looks decent except for that little sprinkle sunday afternoon. we may get to the mid 80's on the lower eastern shore. hurricane carla making its way toward the mexican coastline. that should move inland and weaken. gillian looks like she is losing steam, but igor is the one to watch. it is still a very strong hurricane. the eye has been diminishing and then coming back. it is still drifting in the direction of bermuda. it is a category 3 hurricane, 125 mile an hour winds at that center of the storm. it should get close to bermuda sometime sunday afternoon or evening. it should pass right through the region sunday evening before it weakens and moves off to the
