baltimore's next top prosecutor. he faces a republican candidate in the general election this fall. >> earlier this afternoon, patricia jessamy conceded the race. bernstein is already working on the transition. >> he vows to leverage partnerships, make the office more transparent and accountable. [applause] gregg bernstein waded through a large crowd of supporters to say thank you from the very spot where announce his candidacy. >> people of all races, ages, and economic groups were ready for change, and ready for a fresh approach to tackling the crime and violence in baltimore's neighborhoods. >> his campaign began just two months ago under the assumption he had no chance. he pledged to leverage partnerships, not only with police but with the judiciary and public defender's office,

and promises that the first and the public will notice is how transparent and accountable his office will be. >> i ran for this office because i believe public safety is one of our most important rights, and that everyone, regardless of who they are or where they live, has the right to feel safe and secure in their homes and neighborhoods. >> at jessamy was the city's top prosecutor for 15 years. her eyes filled with tears and a smile on her face, she accepted defeat graciously. she says she is not going quietly into the night, but she is moving forward. >> we cannot arrest and convict our way out of our current predicament. >> she will be volunteering her services for a project called the fifth sunday violence to virtue initiative. >> we have to begin to change individuals from the inside out. working with children in making sure that our children have every opportunity to be successful citizens and not grow up into cold-blooded killers who

are continuing the cycle of violence. >> jessamy says her legacy in office influence national policy. she originated a gun initiative that turned into project xl, wrote the witness intimidation laws now on the books, created a prosecution program and anti- gang initiative. >> a pledge that i will do my best to fairly administer the powers of my office, to exercise discretion, and to make baltimore a separate place. >> bernstein says he plans to be the public face of the office, rather than use a spokesperson. he says after some down time, he will wind down his private law practice, look into an audit of the city state's attorney's office, of trying to restore faith people lost in the criminal-justice system. >> despite six days of early voting opportunities, voter turnout in maryland's primary appears to have been the lowest

about the man who opened fire inside hopkins hospital yesterday. paul pardus spent his days transporting disabled patients. police say he became so distraught over his mother's prognosis, he shot a surgeon before turning the gun on his own mother and then himself. it is a shock to his brother. >> he just wanted to stay with her and to be with turkey -- to be with her if he could. >> pardus and his mother both died at the scene. the surgeon, dr. david cohen, is expected to survive his injuries. today it was pretty much back to normal at the hospital. >> this afternoon, police commissioner bealefeld said he will give his department and the first responders very high marks, but says they are looking very closely at what could have been done better. the response time to the

shooting was fast and efficient, according to the commissioner. >> the initial response to this, the communications with hopkins security and the police department is unparalleled. >> hopkins officials and police investigators spent time looking over surveillance video from the scene, trying to determine exactly where paul warren pardus enter the hospital, and what security systems were in place. he was carrying a semiautomatic handgun like this one. >> a very small weapon. the whole thing could be concealed in the palm of your hand. a very small weapon. in terms of recognizing an armed gunman and all those things that people will be arise about, it would present a big challenge. >> investigators are also taking a closer look at pardus and his movements and habits. >> we don't know yet if it was

in his daily routine, coming in visiting his mother, that he always had that done. was this an anomaly in his behavior? those are the things we are asking about. >> according to hospital officials, dr. david cohen is it fair condition tonight. they released a statement saying they have 400 security guards, but isolated incidents " occur. >> police are investigating a triple stabbing on board an mta bus. just after 3:00 this afternoon, officers were called to the no. 51 bus. the mta says the victims were involved in a fight that ended in the stabbings. they are all being treated for

non life-threatening injuries. >> baltimore police released a surveillance photo in hopes of identifying a suspect in a stabbing that happen last thursday night downtown. it is unclear what led to the violence, but officials are acting for your help to find the suspect. if you recognize this and in the photograph, you are asked to call baltimore city police. >> witnesses told the jurors more about the night former city councilman tim harris was killed, and how they feared for their own lives. barry simms is following the trial and joins us live from courthouse east. >> the former employee of the new haven lounge concluded her testimony today, telling the jury the impact the robbery and murder of former city councilman ken harris has had on her. elizabeth not only had to talk about how frightened she was

when three men robbed the jazz club in september 2008. she had to explain differences in her testimony friday and past statements she made to police. the three men are charged with robbery and murder of kenneth harris, who was shot when he tried to flee. a identifying suspects has been problematic. prosecutors are relying on dna evidence and believe the robbers wore gloves to hide their fingerprints. police want to know why showers did not mention anything about the suspects having gloves on their hands. >> if we found love in your purse, would that be yours, and she said no. she never said the perpetrators had gloves, never brought that up until almost a year later. they specifically asked, and she never said anything about it. >> prosecutors believe a security officer can identify gary collins as one of the robbers. the officers claim collins has a distinct wall.

>> miss showers made it very clear that she saw the person into the bar and then walk all the way around, and she said that this person had no particular lamp or weird hitch about his wall. she was very clear about that in her statement. i understand she kind of forgot about that. >> showers described her terror during the robbery, saying i thought i was going to die. she said she tried to remember everything. i was very upset. i had learned someone had gotten murdered. one beat snatched her purse. police discovered bandannas in her purse. >> i found it odd that they talked to were the morning after the alleged incident, and two days after, they brought her in for the sole purpose of going through the items in the person to identify what was hers and what was not. the talk about the gloves, shoes, the 9 millimeter casing,

50's. there is yesterday's cold front, and you can still see some of the strong storms offshore. the next cold front will move in rapidly, but this does not have much moisture with that at all. it will move through here sunday night and monday morning. behind it there is more cool if not cold air. it is cold enough for rain to mix with snow in parts of montana and the northern rockies this afternoon. the seasons are changing, especially up to the north of us. the front slides down into virginia and we get back into a dry mode early next week. there is not much rain in the forecast until maybe the end of the work week next week. sunny skies tomorrow, a beautiful saturday. highs of 78-83. on the bay, the winds will be like, the waves less than 1 foot. a quiet day out on the chesapeake bay tomorrow afternoon. a little chilly tomorrow morning

and again on sunday morning heading toward the mountains. around the chesapeake bay, sunny skies and high temperatures near 80. the same scenario on the lower eastern shore. if you are going to any of the beaches, watch out for the rip currents, because of hurricane ego witches -- hurricane karl igor, which is expected to get close to bermuda going into the weekend. sunday afternoon into sunday evening, it may still be a category 2 hurricane, but will we get on this track to that north. hurricane karl is expected to deliver heavy rain to parts of the interior of mexico. around here, high pressure means sunshine for saturday, partly cloudy sunday, temperatures in the upper 70's on monday and tuesday, and another chance for rain next thursday and friday.
