tv Early Today NBC October 1, 2010 4:30am-5:00am EDT
4:30 am
>> good morning, everybody. >> thanks for joining us for an extended addition, or early edition. >> or very early edition. we are here earlier because of the rain and flooding situation. we will cover that in the first half hour. our meteorologist will bring us up to date. >> this is as close as we will come to having a brush with a tropical cyclone.
4:31 am
it was a hybrid. not really a tropical storm. a lot of tropical rain in which a former tropical storm got caught up and was pulled in our direction. a lot of rain, too. where do we stand now? 63 degrees, 88% humidity. still cloudy, barometer is low at 29.58. the wind has become northwesterly at 10 miles an hour. not a lot of moisture out of of a northwest wind generally. that is the case right now because we don't have a lot of moisture -- well, as much actual moisture. in baltimore the rain has ended at this stage. we will look at the large scale radar just to give you an idea. the bulk of the rain has moved out. especially heavy stuff. new york state. hudson river valley and new england will deal with it today. we have clouds. there are a few showers east of
4:32 am
town. that is all that is left just about. the remaining issue with flooding and whatnot will start to straighten itself out today. by the end of the day we fully intend to get some sunshine in the picture and turn this around. here is the amount of rain we got yesterday. on tv hill almost five inches of rain. east of us, six, seven, eight inches of rain. you see the band of red up and down the bay into harford county and into pennsylvania. that is where the heaviest rain was yesterday and that was up six, seven, eight-inches. farther west the lesser amounts of rain. but three to four inches at a minimum. most of the thunderstorm activity has moved east and is in new jersey. as far as the flood threat, we have a flood warning around our area. advisories elsewhere. so we are dealing with the left overs from the storm. the windiest conditions will be
4:33 am
the atlantic coastline although we will be breezy here. we look at the surface map and we see this storm system beginning to pull out of the picture and move to the east clearing, showers to the east of us ending. 72 to 76 and breezy, northwest winds 10 to 20 miles an hour. now we have given you the general picture. sandra shaw is outside and we will talk with her about what she is experiencing. >> good morning. john, it is immensely better than yesterday when we were both working and tracking this on a.c. doppler with numerous tornado warnings, watches. et cetera. but i can feel the northwest wind drying things out, which is refreshing. we are here down in felds point and it is and a area that typically floods. yesterday was an exception. this is closed. this is down to the water of the inner harbor and this is
4:34 am
receding. when i came 30 minutes ago it was up to the telephone pole but it is going back but the streets are flooded in the low-lying areas. there is a lot of pooling on the roads so a slight risk of hydroplaning. it was interesting with the push from the bay waters that basically with that we had the inner harbor around the promenade flooded last night, around 5:00 or 6:00, and high tide is over so the general trend will be things will only improve. just be aware this morning because you have rain and that all the rats are flushed out. i have seen six so far that are flushed out here because i guess all the water and nowhere to go. other than that, there is a lot of debris and more over there. a lot of mud that you see that is kind of conglomerating on the
4:35 am
streets and here on the cobblestones. but it will be improving. that is great here because it is the weekend at felds point festival. i'm sure they will have the streets clean and everything will be fabulous and ready for a nice cool weekend as a canadian air mass will help us have cooler conditions by the second half of the weekend. sarah, what does it look like with you? i know it was -- >> actually, you updated us some there and we have some flooding will be the big issue. westbound dorsey road between central avenue and 648 all lanes closed and 168 at 648. all the way up in elkton 222, perryville rather, happy valley road a downed tree blocking lanes. route 7 and white hall in the perry area -- rather the elkton area. that is another area where you will find flooding and closures
4:36 am
in effect because of that. rest of the major roads as we view the speed sensors going to see speeds down. right now they are 35 on the north side around the harrisburg expressway. 20 on the northwest corner of the beltway and j.f.x. running smoothly so far. we will keep you posted on any new delays that crop up and closures. live view of harford road shows a pretty nice commute so far but volume is on the light side. we will go to a live view at liberty where we are running smoothly, no major problems to report on the beltway. that is the latest. now to you, mindy and stan. >> our big story the weather alert. while it seems the remnants of nicole have passed we feel the effect. as the water recedes we see the damage. jennifer franciotti joins us from perry hall with a look at damage will. >> good morning. a good portion of bel air road
4:37 am
shut down north of the beltway, a major commuter route. i will step out of the way so you can see some of the work going on by state highway crews and private contractors. they say a sinkhole happened somewhere after midnight along bel air road so it will be closed in the northbound direction at necker avenue in the southbound direction at route 43 which is white marsh boulevard. this is near the old forge town homes. so this is above the beltway. the sink hole happened in the northbound lane near a storm pipe, i'm told, that burst. there was some sort of casing along the pipe and it caused a portion of it to cave in. what you are seeing is we had an excavator that is now trying to smooth out some gravel that is being poured into this hole. according to contractors, they will try to fill it with gravel
4:38 am
and they have steel plates they will put over the northbound lanes make this passable for drivers until they can get back into this area some time on sunday and make more permanent repairs. on the other side of where the workers are you see the trees and a wooded area. right there on the ground is a little stream. i walked down there a while ago and you can see a lot of water and runoff. so it is believed that when that pipe broke that watery area is weakening it. they are working and doing probably i would say in the last 30 minutes we have seen maybe five truckloads of gravel. they want to open it as soon as possible for commuter traffic. friday morning, normally a lighter day but this is not a road that you want shut down at any time. reporting live along bel air road, jennifer franciotti, wbal tv 11 news. now to kim dacey who i believe is it anne arundel county.
4:39 am
>> we are in severn and we are on gambrills road closed between sle sleepy hollow and antrum. quite a few crew and police have it blocked off. that entire lane is almost an entire sinkhole. it takes up almost the entire right hand lane. so it is very large. i just walked up there a few minutes ago and it is quite impressive and quite a bad situation. they are just trying to assess it. highway crews on the scene said this was one of the biggest sinkholes they have ever seen. there is also a pipe underneath that sinkhole. so it could take some maneuvering and could take a while to fix it. they said plan on gambrills being being closed here for the foreseeable future as they try to deal with this. we are having a light rain right now just kind of sprinkling.
4:40 am
so the rain has pretty much abated as far as we can tell. but that damage has already been done and that sinkhole taking up most of that lane. so they can't open this road even in one direction because one whole lane is essentially gone because of the sinkhole. pretty impressive and big. so crews here trying to fix that. an area to avoid and we will keep you posted on the latest developments here. back to you. >> remember, our coverage continues on line all the time. you can get updates from our insta-weather team. they are blogging about the impact and we have fired up the live wire updates and you can track active storms with our interactive radar. you can help us report on the storms as so many of you with u-local. be sure to check the bottom of the screen for traffic and weather updates and closures. >> it is now 4:40, 61 degrees on
4:41 am
tv hill. there is much more in this early version of "11 news today." >> you can see the trend on radar here is to push the rain out of the picture. what is next? the forecast for the weekend is next. >> if you are getting ready for the commute you will have to get ready for flooding in many areas and closures in effect. you heard some of them. we will update the list coming up. we believe keeping kids healthy can start with healthy hands. with the lysol no-touch hand soap system healthy hands can be automatic. for healthy tips and more, visit lysol.com/missionforhealth.

sprinkles in the northeast corner of the state. generally from the bay eastward. a couple of sprinkles in carroll county as well. it is pulling out of the picture. the heaviest rains are now in new jersey, northeast pennsylvan pennsylvania. really even out of delaware. so we are in much better shape than we were yesterday at this time. rainfall totals have been anywhere from five, six, seven inch inches. let's look at the situation as it stands right now. what we did as far as the weather is concerned. if we can switch to the main computer we see 63 degrees at the airport officially, 88% humidity. northwest wind 10. barometer 29.58. there is the major storm system pulling out of the picture right now. severe thunderstorms, nothing showing up on the map. wind advisories for the atlantic coastline. 78 the high yesterday. almost didn't seem like it got
4:44 am
that warm but it was a muggy day and kind of a tropical feeling. 64 and 65 were the lows. 6.02 inch, a record. 5.72 at the inner harbor. the old record was 1.6 inches in 190. we -- 1920. we smashed that without the benefit of a direct hit from a hurricane or tropical storm. it was just kind of a strung out tropical system in which an old tropical depression got involved. here are the totals. we had the five to six inches around baltimore and seven, eight, approaching nine inches of rain just east of us. southeast baltimore and harford county were hardest hit along with areas long both shores of the bay. as far as temperatures this morning, we see some cooler readings from the northwest. in the 50's to the northwest of us but 60's to near 70 in
4:45 am
southeast maryland down in the lower eastern shore. flood threats still out there today. this is all just leftover from the rain. there are the clouds and weather system. it is beginning to pull out so it is pushing the humid air out and cooler, drier air is just west of us. we expect today to get some sun if in the -- in the picture and it will be completely different there afternoon than yesterday. so, clearing is the trend with a few lingering showers east ending. it is breezy and it will be breezy today. 10 to 20. gusts stronger. we expect a high in the low to mid 70's. so, improving conditions. future cast, let's watch the trend. we dry out. looking good. as we go into the weekend saturday looks fine early in the morning. but into sunday we see another weather system, more tropical moisture from the south, no clouds and it won't be as heavy but there is some rain coming back in the forecast.
4:46 am
seven days out, 73 today the sun breaks through. saturday nice day, 67 the high, morning low 48. struggling to make it to 60 sunday. rain back in the picture and with us on monday. temperatures stay on the cool side all week and we have rain chances right into midweek. now we want to check out the swaeuituation outside with sand shaw. good morning. >> hey, john. things are improving out here but it is a little chilly. that is a brisk northwest wind serving to dry us out and along with that you can feel will be a much cooler day and weekend. we are here at wolf street at felds point. the road is closed. some of these are all around the city. the city was pro-active and i got on it and we have seen city workers monitoring the area assessing the situation. i saw a couple of crews out.
4:47 am
this flooded yesterday because the harbor is right there and that water was too much for it to hold. so it surpassed the wall and flooded fame street. but it is recede iing and has b all morning. there is a lot of clean-up because in the aftermath of all of that you know the harbor continues an immense amount of garbage and you are seeing that with the mud. so the aftermath is going on. it will be a clean-up day and be nice to have sun to dry things out but get a head start on the clean-up. really a record-setting storm as we predicted. interesting because it was kind of a two-parter. we had the area of low pressure riding up the front and remnants of nicole that gave us the rainfall overnight. a record at the airport of six inches and along the southern counties where you had the tornado warnings at this point,
4:48 am
they had more like eight inches around that area. so, we really have had a record-setting year as far as the summer, hottest ever on record at b.w.i.-marshall with more than 57 90-plus-degree days and blizzards over the winter and tornadoes and a hybrid tropical storm. what is next? time can only tell. that is it. back to you, sarah. >> good morning, everyone. it is going to be a dicey ride with flooding that continues to be an issue. downed trees also. we have updated closures. in the area of old bosley right at delaney valley road there is a downed tree. one at warren and bosley. two problems that will impact your morning commute. we heard from jennifer franciotti in perry hall that bel air road is shut down at necker avenue. that will remain in effect throughout the morning. we have a tree down we are
4:49 am
hearing at old mill and red mile in anne arundel county. ki kim dacey reporting on the closing at severn. we are not in the 5:00 hour yet and you can see speed sensors indicating some delays. all of that is weather related and it is good to keep the speeds down. we will look outside to show you harford road so far is looking good where it intersects with the beltway. beltway is problem free right now except the roads are wet. on the west side so far running in pretty good shape down toward edmondson and i-95. 95 in excellent shape. not dealing with incidents at this hour. rest of the major roads up to the beltway in pretty good shape as well. we will he keep you posted. that is the latest on "traffic pulse 11." back to you. >> our big story, obviously has to do with the weather. much of us is understood a flash
4:50 am
flood watch after several inches of rain fell. >> it has caused major problems including flooding, traffic nightmares and closures. jennifer franciotti joins us live from perry hall with a look at the damage in that area. what is happening now, jen? >> we are here in perry hall and it looks like they are making major progress along bel air road. they had a sinkhole situation in the northbound lanes just north of necker avenue. right now bel air is shut down in the southbound area from 43 northbound from necker avenue around the area of a storm pipe. it looks like that weakened the structure of the road and caved in. we have had work crews and the first half was to excavate the road, get that chunks of concrete out of the way and get the water sopped up a little bit. they are working on a temporary fix so they fill it in with gravel and the excavator is
4:51 am
pounding it in and the plan is to put huge steel plates over the road to make it passable for traffic. according to state highway earlier this morning they had originally anticipated this would be shut down for a good portion of the morning. but according to the contractors they are making pretty good steady progress and they are hoping to get it reopened as soon as possible. what that means i can't tell you but we are here monitoring the situation. i can tell you they have the hole filled in less than an hour. right now they are pounding it down and the plan is to put steel plates over. state highway won't reopen it until they know it is safe for drivers. the plan from contractors is sunday they will come back out and make a more permanent fix to the situation. bel air road right now shut down to traffic between necker and 43. they are letting local traffic out if you are looking for a marker as to where this is, it is near the old forge town homes which by the way was my first home when we moved to maryland 13 years ago, lived in this
4:52 am
townhouse complex way back before kids and everything. that is the latest here on bel air. back to you. >> kim dacey in anne arundel. you have a sinkhole you are dealing with. >> yes, we are on gambrills road and it is closed between sleepy hollow and antrum. we are getting new information. i spoke to phraofrs and they say -- moves and they say the call came in about the sinkhole. it takes up most of the northbound lanes of gambrills road. you can see it is on like a causeway over a drainage ditch is what they said. the water in that ditch became so high from all of the rain yesterday that it rushed across the road and caused this giant sinkhole in the northbound lane of gambrills road. i walked up there a few minutes ago and it is impressive.
4:53 am
it takes up most of the northbound lane and it is pretty wide across. the officers said they have never seen anything like this before, never seen this big a sinkhole. they say it will take a while to fix. the tkraepblg ditch is there -- the drainage different is there and piping so it is not a simple patch. it takes more than that. they mentioned it could be days before it is back open. so, a serious situation here and in an area you want to avoid. people in the area are going to be routed on different directions around gambrills road to get around it. luckily it is not in front of a house and not blocking anyone's driveway so folks wouldn't have to necessarily take this. it may take a little to get around until it is fixed and that could be a couple of days. we are looking at a serious situation. it has been lightly raining since we got here, so it seems like the worst of the rain is over so the flooding has subsided but left there sink

hole, closed between sleepy hollow and antrum. we will keep you posted as more developments and information is available. that is the latest from anne arundel county. back to you. >> go to pictures on the website. thank you. here is one of this. and thanks to a photo from middle river. you can share pictures and video on wbaltv.com. click on u-local. >> came out pretty good. >> look at the bottom of the screen for updates and closures. >> it is now 4:54. 61 degrees. there is much more ahead in this extended version of "11 news today." >> the heavy rain has sended. we have a few sprinkles and showers. eventually some sun. i will detail that coming up. >> of course, we are dealing with lots of weather-related
4:55 am
4:56 am
4:57 am
>> good morning. it is almost all over but the shouting. the pumping out or whatever you have to do. we got four, five, six, seven inches of rain the past 4 -- 24 hours. 61 degrees, still high humidity. still some sprinkles and showers in the area. 29.61, barometer still low. that is an indication that the storm is still here but the worst of it is pulling away. we can look at the combination of radar and satellite.
4:58 am
i have everything skewed to make the point. most of it is clear as a bell west of us. that is what is coming in. what you see going out is the storm system. we will enjoy better weather later on today. i will detail that in a few minutes. >> the time is now 4:57. 61 degrees on tv hill. here is a look ahead to "11 news today." >> a sinkhole has a portion of bel air road shut down in perry hole. a live report is next. >> i'm kim dacey live in severn on the scene of a giant sinkhole. a live report is coming up. >> you heard about the sinkholes. we will tell you more about closures and talk about flooding and downed trees around the area as we try to recover from the storm. storm. details on the morning commute
