to cave in. they have been filling it in with gravel and possibly a good sign they could be wrapping up in the next hour is the fact they were dealing with brooms a moment ago and not shovels. that was brooms to push the gravel around a little bit. they have been working hard out here trying to get this temporarily fixed so they can reopen traffic. their plan is to fill this with gravel, put steel plates over the road to make it passable for traffic. then they will come back on sunday and really get a permanent fix in, fix the pipe and road and put cement down and reopen it for traffic. but it is friday morning and they want to make it as easy as possible for commuters. but right now bel air road a portion is shut down above the beltway. back to you with kim dacey who has a bigger sinkhole to talk about. >> unfortunately we have a
5:05 am
really big sinkhole. we are in severn on gambrills road shut down from sleepy hollow to antrum. it is a deep sinkhole and takes up most of the northbound lane of gambrills. from here it looks like a shadow but it is just a portion of the road that has fallen off into the ground. apparently the water came up so high in the drainage ditch that it washed over the road and washed away part of the road creating the sink hole taking up most of the northbound lane here. sleepy hollow and antrum are the areas that it will be closed so you want to avoid that. police are object -- on the scene to warn folks. a very large sinkhole. the rain, it seems, has stopped for the moment. it was little raining but again it stopped for the moment so hopefully most of it is over. the flooding has subsided but it leaves this huge sinkhole.
5:06 am

5:29 am
5:30 am
>> good morning, quick back to "11 news today." >> thanks for joining us. let's check weather and traffic. there is a lot to talk about with the big storm. >> it was not a clearly defined tropical storm. just a stream of tropical moisture with several disturbance as it gave us intense rain and caught up in the stream was the leftover from nicole. so was not all nick call. all that aside, we are starting to straighten things out a little bit. we look at the h.d. doppler and it is cloudy, a little drizzle around. the heavy rains have moved out of the picture on the tkradar i the metropolitan area. so, even the drizzle will go away. skies are beginning to clear in western maryland. that is the good news. we will see sun this afternoon
5:31 am
and it will be a totally different picture. then we will restart the rain thing by the end of the weekend and start all over. >> what i can say is it is better than yesterday. we had a lot of problems and much of the flood hags subsided. we have some closures in effect that is storm related damage. a new problem on southbound 95 right at route 24 harford county a vehicle fire reported. southbound lanes. we will up dadate that when we d out what lanes are closed. warren road and bosley road we have a downed tree and a downed tree at old bosley and delaney valley. perry and necker avenue bel air that closure in effect. jennifer franciotti will have more. a slowdown on the northwest corner of the beltway approaching 795 from reisterstown. 27 miles an hour there. farther south in severn a
5:32 am
closure due to the sink at gambrills and antrum. now we will give you a couple of live views. key bridge and good on the east side. no problems to report on the entire beltway. you can see we have a pretty smooth ride except it is wet on harrisburg expressway from parkton. >> our big story is much of our viewing area is under a flash flood watch after nicole dumped several inches of rain causing major problems including flooding, traffic and closures. jennifer franciotti joins us live from perry hall with a look at the sink hall there. >> we will have to get john collins or sandra to correct me but i heard that one inch of rain is equal to 10 inches of snow. so we could have been dealing with 60 inches of snow and these guys behind me, they are more
5:33 am
happy to deal with a sinkhole than snow plows. they are working on bel air road which had a sinkhole in the northbound lanes. it had to do with a combination of a couple of things. seven or eight months ago there was a new water pipe put in and there was a sewer drain there. couple that with six or seven inches of rain and made for a bad combination with breakage and caused the road to cave in. they spent the last several hours excavating the area, filling it in with gravel. now they are putting steel plates over the road as a temporary fix to get the road reopened for the friday morning rush hour. they will come back on sunday and do a permanent fix. right now they are working for the morning commuters. they hope to have this reopened around 6:00 or 6:30. so they have state highway crews inspect being the situation. -- inspecting the situation. they are trying to reopen for the commute but they will have
5:34 am
to come back sunday for a more permanent fix. my sinkhole here in perry hall is getting the finishing touches but in anne arundel county i think kim we are having a bet, i think that your sinkhole will be bigger than mine? >> i think it might be bigger than yours. but from what i can see this is the biggest sinkhole a lot of people on the scene have seen. yours is getting finished up, but this one was just discovered a couple of hours ago, called in by a resident. county highway folks just got on the scene and are checking out the sinkhole back here to assess the situation and see what kind of damage they have. apparently there is a pipe underneath there so it is going to be hard to fix. we have video of inside the sinkhole we took a few ago that wae can show you. it is pretty deep and wide. it takes up most of the northbound lanes of gambrills road and it is closed between
5:35 am
antrum and sleepy hollow. an area to avoid. the video shows it is really deep and there is just a road sitting in there, just fell inside of itself. there is a pipe so it will be hard tore fill and more difficult than the ordinary patch work. police say it is the biggest sinkhole they have ever seen. county highway checking it out to see how they might be able to fix it and what it will take to put this road back together again. the rain has stopped here though, so that is good news. the flooding has subsided but left this hole. so, on the scene here dealing with it, we will have the latest as we get it. back to sandra shaw who is live in baltimore. >> nothing compared to what you are dealing with on the sink hole. that is incredible. here in felds point there are areas that typically flood. we have streets closed.
5:36 am
i'm on fame treat and it has been -- fame street and has been closed since noon yesterday. but the good news we have watched this street recede. the water was about halfway up here behind me when we got here at 4:00 a.m. now just a couple of pools of water are here. it is generally on the upswing. right now we are looking at drizzle and sideways mist. it is a little chilly because the winds are picking up briskly from the northwest. that is because ultimately we will be drying out and there is a lot of debris on the streets. because of all garbage from the inner harbor washed up and you have the mud here with the flooding yesterday. all in all, you dodged a bullet. nothing like isabel when all a lot of the canton area and felds point was flooded area. i was talking to one advertising agency on wolf street and the last big storm we had they had
5:37 am
all of their equipment flooded out and chairs and tables there. so yesterday they took preventive action. if you walk down here you will see sand bags at people's houses because they were pro-active. we had good forecasting with it and it came in to fruition that people could get a head start. be prepared. that is the situation from downtown. we are on the upswing. we will be in store for a much cooler weekend ahead. >> sandra, i know you live in the downtown area and do a lot of running in that area. did you see the flooding along the promenade last night? >> that was incredible last night. that subsided from what we hear this morning. that was with the high tide and it was incredible. that is typically happens. i was watching jay miller's reports. that was a scene to see. >> all the way to the steps up to the pavilion. that is all gone now. that is good. you can track the storms and any

we have clouds, a little drizzle out there. this is the sky cam view over the city. 60 degrees on tv hill. i have the satellite image and radar. we see the rain, the bulk of it has moved out the past three hours. but low clouds over the area that gray shade over central and eastern maryland, that is still producing a little drizzle. farther west you see less of that gray. clouds are thinning out in western maryland, which means eventually some sunshine creating into the picture. that will be nice. we will detail this with the insta-weather plus forecast in a minute. >> a new study finds too little or too much sleep during early pregnancy is linked to high blood pressure. researchers found elevated blood pressure in expecting moms who logged less than six or more than 10 hours in the first few months of pregnancy. the risk of developing

>> we will look now at the weather outside. sandra shaw is out there this morning and she played the game just right by staying in the studio yesterday and then going out there during the day today. all we are dealing with this morning is drizzle, right? >> it is not bad. i'm actually very relieved that the thing got out of here like we were hoping. a couple of waves rolled through but it was that we made it past high tide and a couple of streets like this near wolf flooded. this is an area that typically floods. you have the inner harbor water and boats so they have problems but a lot of the residents are used to it so they were prepared. this is no isabel. a lot of peel who have been here equate most storms to that when you deal with a tropical system. it was insane yesterday because we had a lot of potential
5:48 am
tornadoes and lines of severe thunderstorms that rolled up and really a lot of the target zone was around st. mary's and calvert counties and areas that got the most rain were right up the line up the chesapeake bay. a lot of the heaviest rain fell over the bay yesterday. again the heavy rain from five to eight inches. john will have the specific numbers but i can tell you a new record at the airport of six inches of rainfall with torrential downpours remnants of nicole and before that a stalled frontal boundary and it sucked in all of that atlantic moisture with tropical moisture. this morning we have light drizzle, cloud cover around we have brisk northwest winds picking up. normally i complain about the wind because i don't like it but it is good because it will dry us out and we will see a nice weekend and cooler weekends as well. again if you are running around downtown there are areas of
5:49 am
standing water and some roads close bud no reports of sinkholes. they are trying to clean up the inner harbor and promenade that was flooded with the rise of water and tide and wind. other than that just cleaning up. a lot of debris and mud. so, things improving for the weekend. we could see rain for the second half of the weekend. we go from a very dry september to more rain than we know what to do with heading into the first day of october. >> and the radar is looking good. heavy stuff is moving out of the picture. we will get some sunshine in the picture today. it is not sunrise yet. still dark. a review of yesterday, sandra mentioned 6.02 the rain at the airport. the old record was 1.6 inches so we blew that away. inner harbor 5.72 inches measured. typically we would get a 10th of an inch to .12 of an inch.
5:50 am
it was not a clearly defined tropical storm. it was a stream of moisture with a couple of disturbances inside the stream. one of which was the remnant of an old tropical storm. rain totals. in general the area got somewhere between three and six inches of rain but there was a core of heavier rain along the eastern and western shore of the bay that was from seven to 8.5 inches then a couple of areas in southern maryland, parts of virginia, that got up to 10.5 inches of rain. this morning upper 60's to near 70 in southeast maryland but most in the 60's. parkton 59. hagerstown 57. 50's in western maryland. we look at the satellite image put in the weather features. last of the low pressure, this is what is left of nickel. beginning to pull out east of us
