plus, the latest in "traffic pulse 11" so you can plan your morning commute. that as "11 news today" continues right now. [captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> good morning, happy friday. thank goodness the week is almost over. >> thanks for joining us for "11 news today." >> john collins has a check of the forecast. are we past the big weather event? >> the big part. we got kind of a tease tuesday with a lot of rain. yesterday is about as close as we will get with an encounter with a tropical storm. it was not really a tropical storm. it was a stream of tropical moisture and a couple of episodes of intense rain part a remnant of nicole. the heaviest rains were not during the day not associated
6:01 am
with nicole. it was all one big strung out system and that is pulling out of the picture. we look at the radar and we will give you numbers. we have low clouds over the city and points east producing a little drizzle and a couple of sprinkles. the more significant rains are up in new jersey and new york state and moving to new england. let's go to the other computer and give you the numbers. 61 degrees, a little drizzle or sprinkle activity. humidity still up, barometer down and winds north to northwest at 17, gusting to 23 miles an hour. there is the general system. look out to the west. that is where the phaoimmediate weather is coming from. there is nothing happening west of the mountains. nothing happening this afternoon. this is where the heaviest rains were. three to six inches around the area from frederick eastward on to the delmarva. but there was a band of heavy
6:02 am
stuff around the bay and both shores of the bay and just eastern part of the city seven to 8 1/2 inches of south of us around st. mary's county, st. mary's city, naval air station, up to 10.5 inches of rain. >> that is a lot of water. >> it is. now we are dealing with the aftereffects. one could be traffic. sarah caldwell has that. >> good morning, everyone. we are dealing with some traffic issues out there. perry hall a sinkhole and accident bel air and fitch. charles and bellona a defective traffic light and downed trees and flooding alo falls road and smith avenue. warren road and bosley and old bosley delaney valley and flooding still an issue blocking
6:03 am
north point at kane street. camp grills and an triumph in -- gunm gambrills and an tkreupl drive. old mill and 170 another issue with flooding. many areas with storm-related damage and it will be a while before all of them reopen. we will keep you posted on the closures. let's look at volume to see if we are developing any delays. pretty nice ride at the key bridge. no problems at any other area bridges. tunnel traffic smooth at this time. we will switch to the harrisburg expressway out of parkton away from us southbound traffic still running at a pretty good pace. that is the latest on "traffic pulse 11." back to you. >> our big story, the weather. what is left of it. as everyone heads out they are bound to run into some flooding. >> to keep you informed we have team coverage with kim dacey and jennifer franciotti.
6:04 am
joining us now is sandra shaw in fells point. doesn't look bad. >> it is not. yesterday was a different story. stan mentioned jay miller's report on the promenade last night. this morning it is still roped off but all of that flooding and water from the harbor has subsided and gone back in. so, it will be more object a clean-up mode. right here behind me thames street was flooded but it has subsided quickly and now just a couple of pools of water are left. the city transportation department guy said you need to move because we need to open back up the street so they are in clean-up and are reopening streets and assessing the situation. you will see a lot of debris down here came up from the inner harbor along the cobblestone streets and that is what you will see on the promenade with the expected trash. that is the clean-up that needs to take place. really it is incredible what we
6:05 am
saw with the heavy rain streaming up northward with kind of a hybrid tropical blend of moisture and moisture pulled in from the atlantic. the 10.5 inches to the south shows you where the bull's eye was because that is where all the tornadoes were about this time yesterday when we saw around calvert and st. mary's county is where the heavier impulses that john mentioned were rumbling through. a new record at the airport at six inches of rainfall. this is is -- this is a record setting year with record snow and we had a record setting summer, hottest on record ever at b.w.i.-marshall with more than 57 days of 90-degree weather, then on the tail of a tropical system that dumps a record amount of rain. so quite a weather year and it is an anomaly. it has been fun to track and forecast and a challenge. that is the situation here
6:06 am
around downtown where it typically floods. we have some interesting impacts from the storm because of the saturated ground. one of them is a sinkhole. we join jennifer franciotti with that. >> one big difference the snowstorms and this is we just dry out from this, we don't have to shovel. i will move out of the way so you can see the situation on bel air road and perry hall. a sink hole happened overnight. crews are putting steel plates over the hole which they filled in with tpwrafl this. is a -- gravel. this is a temporary fix. they will come back sunday to work on it. this is between 43 and necker avenue. as we get into the rush we are starting to see some folks drive up this way and have to make alternate plans. you can use white marsh or joppa. this is a result of a storm drain and possibly a new water pipe that was laid about seven
6:07 am
months ago. i'm being told maybe they were laid too close together and caused some breakage. they have excavated the area and filled it in with gravel. now they are welding steal plates to -- steel plates to reopen it and get it moving on bel air road. hopefully that will happen within the next hour. that is it here. now we will go to kim kill who is in anne arundel county with a bigger sinkhole and a problem that will last much longer than this one. >> that's right. it could be several days before this is fixed. county road people were on the scene looking at the situation. it is one of the biggest sink holes a lot of folks have ever seen. the police cars that are light up the area drove off a few minutes ago so it is a little darker. we shot some video and got up close and personal there so you can see what is looks like
6:08 am
inside and see how big it is. it takes up most of the northbound lane here of gambrills road. sleepy hollow and antrim. a very bad situation. also a drainage pipe under there so the county roads guy said it could be several days before it is fixed. it is more complicated because of the pipe so not just the average fill and fix. we spoke to hill earlier and he said that once it is daylight that is when the real work begins. >> we will peculiar miss utility to locate the underground utilities then we will excavate to see what caused the problem and determine what we do to fix it. >> again here gambrills is closed between sleepy hollow and antrim because of the sinkhole. some have tried to go around it but very dangerous. very hard to see because it is not well lit so avoid the area if you can.
6:09 am
back to you. >> are they going to open that one side there so people can get by or will it be shut down? >> looks like it will be shut down. it is blockeded off right now. the police barricade bud they have orange cones and caution tape across it. it is a two-lane road, very narrow, no shoulders so it would be dangerous to open up one lane because both sides will be trying to come at it and there is no miss to go. so it looks like it will be closed until it is fixed. >> i can only imagine what would happen to your car if you drove into that. big problem. or if kim fell it. >> we wouldn't see here. we are seeing a lot of road damage but i didn't hear a lot of reports of flooded basements. >> i know. my basement wasn't bad. normally it is a problem. it is now 6:09. 60 degrees. >> stay tuned to "11 news

cloudy and only drizzly. 63 downtown as we look at the sky cam. see the camera jogging? the breeze has picked up. yesterday the wind was from the southeast and south dragging in the moisture. now the winds are more northwesterly as the storm pulls away. that is eventually going to filter in drier air. where the winds are southerly you can see the moisture streaming up from the atlantic up into new jersey just beginning to hit long island, new york city. now they get what we had yesterday. behind this main stuff we have low clouds and a couple of areas of sprinkle and drizzle activity, mostly from the city east. farther west the clouds begin to thin out and it is beginning to clear in far western maryland. 78 the high yesterday downtown and at the airport and a lot of rain. 6.02 at the airport. 5.72 downtown at the inner

harbor at the science center. the airport record was new. the old record didn't even compare at 1.6 in 1920. so we blew the records away. in general kind of averaging out what happened rainwise, generally the heaviest rains were in an area from the eastern shore, maryland side, out to around frederick or so. anywhere from three to six inches there. then a band of heavy rain up the bay and on the shoreline on each side where some of the heavier totals were seven to 8 1/2 inches. then an area in southern mad had a couple of places with 10 1/2 inches from that and this is where most of the severe storm activity occurred with high winds and tornado threat. this morning the warmest closer to the coastline and lower eastern shore. moving northwest it begins to cool. parkton 59.

annapolis 63. frederick 61. in the 50's in far western maryland. these brighter clouds you see are still producing a little drizzle. heavier clouds with moisture to the north. what is left of nicole is kind of over us. just not well-defined. first impulse, second impulse. moving out of the picture and drier air coming in. but in is another weather feature at the end of the weekend and it will tap some of the tropical moisture and will back at us. probably not as much. not a repeat of what we had but more rain. so it won't dry out completely. clearing today. showers to the east ending this morning. 72 to 76 the high. and if the clouds are sturb born -- stubborn we will be closer to 72. if the sun breaks through closer to mid 70's. still flood situations as we try

to drain off some of the water. warnings and watches continue for a while this morning. as far as the bay, it is gusty, small craft advisory. north winds 15 to 20. gusts of 30 knots. water temperatures mid 70's. future cast shows moisture pulling out this morning. we get sun this afternoon and look way up here in canada at the top of the picture. there snow. the air is cold enough that there will be snow. there will be a disturbance in the great lakes saturday but looks like we will stay dry. but that front is trying to come in and moisture from the south. by sunday into monday we go back into a rain situation. but just scattered showers, not hea heavy. 73 today, 67 saturday and 59 sunday. sunday we begin to cloud up and rain chances sneak in. monday, tuesday and wednesday as well. once we hit the weekend the highs are only around 60 to 65.

morning lows in the 40's. so it will feel more like autumn and we get wet weather. now we want to check out the traffic to see how the drizzle is effecting things. sarah caldwell. >> you don't need much to affect things. we have an accident in the area of route 32 and frederick road. west friendship and possible delays. bird river and middle river dealing with problems related to the storm. this is a sink hole we are learning about. flooding an issue along north point and king. bel air and neck er white marsh boulevard. and warren road and bosley we have a downed tree and another one at old bosley and delaney. north charms and bellona traffic lights that are defective there. northern parkway and falls a downed straoe and falls at smith avenue tracking some flooding in that area.

6:27 am
bob ehrlich's real record on energy. lobbyists helped write utility regulations. we got stuck with a 72% rate hike. but martin o'malley got tough on bge, forcing them to pay back $2 billion to consumers. and what's bob ehrlich been doing the past four years? he got paid $2.5 million at a lobbying firm, a firm representing special interests and casinos right here in maryland. that's bob ehrlich-- a 72% increase for us and $2.5 million from special interests for himself.
6:29 am
>> good morning, everybody. welcome back to "11 news toda.". >> thanks for joining us. john collins has a quick look at the forecast. >> good morning. interesting day yesterday. a lot of rain. it was tropical in nature although it was not a clearly defined tropical storm or a leftover. it was a combination of different things. but it was warm and humid, a lot of rain. a lot of rain has moved mostly to the east. you see the radar and cloud combination. the bulk of the storm is moving into new jersey, new york state and new england. they get what we had yesterday and we are dealing with kind of the leftovers. i will zoom in a little bit to show the more immediate area. there are a few areas of sprinkle and drizzle but eventually we clear out. we will switch to the main computer. here is a list of some of the more spectacular rain numbers. huntingtown in southern maryland, 10.6 and the boy 10.
6:30 am
essex had 8.5. dublin manor 7.64. b.w.i.-marshall a record 6.02. here on tv hill some kind of record or something, 4.79 inches. usually we get the big rains directly from the leftovers of a tropical storm. this was a little broader type of system. there is still a flood warning and watch and advisory situation out there this morning. it is not from anything that is coming. it is dealing with the leftover and waiting for the water to go down. we are still dealing with that to some degree and it covers the baltimore metro area from baltimore county, city and anne arundel county eastward on to the eastern shore and northeast corner of the state. that diminishes the threat as the water goes down because we are not adding any more tapgs
6:31 am
water. right now b.w.i. 61 the temperature. still some drizzle and overcast skies. 82% the humidity, 29.63 barometer low but it will rise bringing better weather this afternoon and tonight. it will be windy, northwest 16 with gusts to 30. that trend will continue through the rest of the day today as well. but at least it is a northwest wind without any more rain in it. i will have more in a few minutes. >> thanks, john. >> we want to check out the traffic with sarah caldwell to see what the aftereffects are. >> we are dealing with the effects. flooding related closures with sinkholes a big problem and downed trees. the accident is route 32 at frederick road in west friendship. sinkhole in middle river at byrd river road and middle river road. north point and kane closures in

effect because of flooding in that area. perry hall bel air road reopened between necker and route 43. we will keep you posted on other problems. a downed tree summer hill and ba bardon and bosley and old bosley. north charles and bellona a defective light and dealing with a downed tree westbound northern parkway at falls road. falls road and smith avenue flooding. you see the yellow developing on the west so slow spots there. nothing out of the ordinary. in the area of severn we have a closure due to a sink hole at gambrills and antrim and old mill at 170 another spot where flooding may tie you up. a look to see how the volume is shaping up. it is amounting to a delay at old court. some delays forming on southbound 95 out of the northeast from white marsh to
6:33 am
the 895 split. that is the latest on "traffic pulse 11." back to you. >> our big story is all about rain and a lot of it. with the rain brings flooding. >> much of the area yesterday experienced some high water situations but the rain has stopped for the most part and the waters are receding but it is still pretty soggy. we will check with sandra shaw as she joins us from fells point. >> it is soggy out here and brisk with the wind. the winds have picked up and it will try us out. it blew down this street closed on thames which was one that was flooded out when the waters of the inner harbor rose. they are up to the cone early and subsided rapidly as we have seen the win change. you may recall the video from last night when the promenade at the inner harbor was flooded and that water was up to the steps on the promenade.
6:34 am
now all you will see is the ropes there and bricks with a lot of dirt on them, basically a lot of mud and trash from the harbor. the cleanup process will continue today. again some really amazing totals with the rainfall amounts basically having up to 10 inches down to the south and western side of the bay and yesterday at this point there were very strong many pulses we were -- impulses because all much the moisture was sucked up into the chesapeake bay and cut a swat throu through. a new record at b.w.i. and 5.27 at the inner harbor. very impressive hybrid tropical storm. it has been an interesting weather year with the hottest summer ever on record, worst wurpbt on record with the most snowfall in the country and we top it off with a unique tropical system which dumped a record amount of rain on the area. that is something to say we have
6:35 am
been dealing with history in the making all year in 2010. but for here the situation is a little bit of pull r pooling on the roads and clean-up and roads starting to reopen. that is it. back to you. >> interestingly, we are seeing the cars pass behind you. yesterday at 5:00 the water was so high they couldn't get through there. right? >> exactly. and even this morning it was amazing. it was up to the cones and i you r thought this is bad and then it subsided. >> let's talk about power outages because b.g.e. has been working to get everybody powered up. in baltimore city we are told less than 500 customers are without power and 4,000 in baltimore county and anne arundel county we are sold 1,400 still in the dark. >> a westchestminster man is in hospital after being truck by a
6:36 am
vehicle near baltimore boulevard. he was crossing the road when he was hit. we are told he was taken to a nearby hospital are life-threatening injuries. that accident is still under investigation. it is now 6:35 and 60 degrees on tv hill. we will look at what is going on in baltimore county coming up.
6:39 am
>> yesterday the rain caused many to be strandein their vehicles and holes. crews were busy with other things as well. >> baltimore county a huge sinkhole opened up in bel air road. we will go to jennifer franciotti live with the latest there. >> we have good news to report. i will show you. bel air road is reopened although where did my cars go? you can come. it is open. it was shut down in the overnight hours because there was a huge sink hole. it was in the northbound lanes of bel air between necker avenue and white marsh boulevard. according to work crews it was a combination of possibly a new water pipe that was put in about send months ago and storm drain
6:40 am
that sort of combined with the water we had causing a perfect situation for a roadway collapse. they have made temporary repairs filling in with gravel and put steel plates over it and welded it and inspected it to make sure it was safe enough to drive on. they plan to make more repairs sunday. we will give you the information closer to that time as to the possible closure on sunday. right now good news, bel air road reopened in perry hall. no more traffic delays here. back to you. >> that is good. >> amazing how quickly they fixed that. 6:40, 60 degrees. much more ahead. eaks to send jo.
6:42 am
eaks to send jo. i think we need tax breaks to send kids to college. so i worked for a $2,500 tax credit to help pay for college. fought to get pell grants expanded and insisted that college loans go directly to kids instead of through banks. i'm barbara mikulski. i approve this message. because it's not about the next election,
6:43 am
it's about the next generation. right? yeah!!! >> let's get you up to date on traffic problems. many of them are weather related. we have one accident of note. west friendship at 32 and frederick road. other than that we are tracking sinkholes being worked on in middle river and bird river and middle river road and closures that remain in effect along north point and kane street. summer hill at bardon a down tree and one at warren and bosley. and north charles and bellona
6:44 am
road we have traffic lights that are defective. everything running smoothly on the harrisburg and j.f.x. good on the northeast corner of the beltway but we are down to 17 miles an hour on the outer loop west side all volume related as folks make their way around dealing with wet roads. keep that in mind as you travel and if you can leave a little extra tile. old mill at 170 some flooding there and severn at gambrills and antrim a sinkhole blocking that road. let's give you a look at traffic and show you that things are building on the west side and 795 off the ramp. southbound 95 toward us is the southbound lanes and you see the delays starting to fall in place toward 895. that is the latest on "traffic pulse 11." john has more on the forecast. >> we look at the h.d. doppler radar and satellite combined.
6:45 am
the brightest gray shade you see is the lowest clouds producing a little drizzle and sprinkle from the city and bay east. west of there clouds are thinning out. the lowest cloud deck is rising a little bit. so the rain chances go down. there are a couple showers around hagerstown but all of this is moving out. we should see some sun later on. let's look at what happened rainwise. heaviest core was along the bay and on the shore either side. three to six inches generally but we had higher totals. a couple of specifics here. in southern maryland portnec's over look. 9, dublin manor. 7.6. b.w.i. a new record just over six and here 4.75 inches. a few numbers. some of the larger ones around the area.
6:46 am
other numbers are the temperatures. upper 60's to the east of us and lower eastern shore but as you move northwest temperatures cool down. mid 60's around us and 58 at parkton, frederick 61. 50's out in western maryland. so the northwest winds we are picking up and if you have been out to get the paper or something it is breezy. those winds are starting to confidential temperatures down and -- cool temperatures down. here you see the gray shade the brightest gray the low clouds. rain makers are over new jersey and offshore. the darker gray clouds are beginning to thin out a little bit. in western maryland once the sun is up they will see some sunshine today. drier air is coming in as the last impulse of this pulls out of the picture. today the hudson river valley and new england will get what we had yesterday and the last of the humid air is coming out. there will be a new disturbance out of the upper midwest on
6:47 am
sunday and it will tap in more gulf moisture. by the end of the weekend we will go back to kind of a rainy situation. until then it will clear, a few showers baltimore east. wind 10 to 20. gusts stronger. 72 to 76 the high today. just depends on how soon that sun kicks in. the bay forecast, everything has been upgraded to a gale warning. gusts to 35 with a four-foot chop. mid 70's the temperatures with the water. we see the moisture pulling out. if you look at the top of the map cold enough in canada they may see snow. we are talking about all of our rain but remember what season we are going into. saturday morning we do see good
6:48 am
weather, dry conditions but there is something going on in the great lakes. that is a cool front that will come in and help tap into a little moisture off the tropics, which more tropical air won't be that far offshore. so rain comes back into the picture by the end of the weekend. the forecast, today improving weather, we get sun and the raindrops and drizzle go away. 73 the high. 67 the high come. 59 sunday. rain chance comes back in and stays with us, monday through wednesday, not nonstop but the chance is there. highs next week mostly in the low to mid 60's or upper 60's at the end of the week and lows cool, almost autumnlike. >> everyone is drying out from the rain. >> we are dealing with some remnants of the storm. it forced crews to put in hours overnight like in anne arundel county where a sinkhole has opened up in severn where kim
6:49 am
dacey joins us live. jen and her crew have that bel air road passable. what is your situation in severn? >> we have one up on us. looks like there seurg hole will be here a while. it could be days we are told by the road crews. a light rain has started to fall but the flooding that is subsided. it left this sink hole. looks like a shadow from where you are looking at it but we do have some video we shot earlier in the sink hole showing how deep and wide it is. it takes up most of the lane of northbound gambrills road. it is closed between sleepy hollow and antrim. we have seen several cars attempt to come through and have to turn around. it is really a dangerous situation. you do not want to get your car stuck in this gaping hole in the road. so use some caution and avoid the area. it is blocked off for a reason. they have barricades up. we spoke to a road crew on the
6:50 am
scene earlier and they said they will come back around daylight and see what they can find. that is when the real work begins. >> we will be calling miss utility to locate all the under ground utilities. then we will excavate to see what caused the problem and that will determine what we do to fix it. >> there is a drainage pipe in there so it will be more differ. no, sir just a fill-in as in the bel air area. definitely an area to avoid. gambrills between sleepy hollow and antrim at least a few case days -- a few days before it is fixed. >> we will check back with kim and jen and sandra but we want to show you footage shot by skyteam 11 yesterday. >> this is some of the footage from the sky team boat docks
6:51 am
were under warrant and miller's island where waves were crashing into the back yard. can you imagine that? >> no. >> both docks and waterfront neighborhoods took a beating. miller's island which is being battered, pounded. >> i think that a deck in that one area broke apart. >> and downtown area we were talking about the inner harbor. >> we will take another look at weather and traffic together before you head out to start your day when we come become.
6:53 am
four years ago, bob ehrlich got fired as governor of maryland. for good reason. first, he protected tax loopholes for giant cable cable companies. then, he let utilities jack up our rates 72%. and for the last four years, he worked as a hired gun for big corporations, even a bank that took billions from a taxpayer funded bailout. ehrlich sides with corporate executives again and again and again tell bob ehrlich big banks and billionares don't need help. middle class marylanders do.
6:54 am
