case. >> councilwoman helen holton pleaded non -- pleaded no contest. kerry cavanaugh is standing by live outside city hall with reaction and more on what is ahead. we will begin with jayne miller. >> helen holton emerged from the courthouse determined to put a criminal case that has hung over her to rest. >> it is over. >> she entered a plea of no contest to a charge of violating election law. it is similar to a guilty plea. she is acknowledge the evidence against her, while chairing the council committee she asked two developers to cover the cost of a public opinion poll.

the cost was $12,500. she made no mention of the issue in campaign finance reports. one pleaded guilty to this last year. holton was fined $2,500. that spares for the criminal conviction that could force her from office. >> got bless you all. >> can you share why you ask these developers to do the polls? >> the case against her is not entirely closed. she was originally charged with bribery. the decision of the appellate court is still pending. >> these were campaign finance violations. they were relatively minor charges. we think the case that needs to be resolved is the bribery case from the board of appeals.

>> holton is a certified public accountant. investigators will determine whether to take action against term license. >> heard deal allows her to keep her job but is not all good news. the plea appears to have cost her a high-ranking position. >> that is what we learned. city council president jack young removed helen holton from the economic development committee. she remains in office but has been stripped of her leadership position. helen holton did not show any sign of strain during the city council meeting. she took her seat hours after pleading no contest to violating campaign finance regulations. this calls for the chairmanship of the taxation and economic development committee. >> the fact that her actions

were a misdemeanor makes it necessary to remove her of share of the committee. >> jack young had not allowed hurtt to chair the committee but it decided to revoke her leadership role. >> we had to show the council that we take our jobs seriously and i pledge to make sure i uphold the ethical standards of this body. >> one person acknowledged city hall faced increased scrutiny ever since the state prosecutor launched a probe that led to helen holton's indictment and sheila dixon's theft trial. >> i appreciate the council had to make a change there. it is a tough position to be in. i admire the fact that he's stepped up and did something for the group as a whole.

>> not everyone supports the position to force holton off the committee. >> she is a big help to the city and has my support. >> a longtime colleague expressed confidence this will not take the council. >> the council finds a way to go on just like the people of this city. >> instead of promoting the vice chair, a young appointed the newest councilmember to her former position. holton will remain a member of two other committees. her legal troubles came to light as the investigation into sheila dixon's misconduct was grabbing headlines. she was forced out of office after being found guilty of embezzling gift cards intended for they poor.

of gunning down a 16-year-old father to me. the sheriff's office says michael jones was arrested on sunday. they say he shot a man it several times as he sat in a car with his girlfriend. there is new information in the investigation into last week's deadly bus crash. officials say the driver, joseph clabaugh jr, died of a heart attack not from injuries involved in the crash. it is unclear if the heart attack led to the crash. people saw the driver sweating profusely before he passed out. 12 passengers were injured when that bus rolled down an embankment. amtrak is investigating a deadly accident that happened in the middle river. one person was killed. officials say 125 passengers

a boy is making history. he found a jawboned from a meat- eating dinosaur. it was discovered at the dinosaur park in prince george's county and sent to the smithsonian. toyota says repairs have been made to millions of vehicles. more than 5 million vehicles recalled over safety issues have been fixed. the repairs fall under three categories, sticky gas pedals, and unintended acceleration. nearly 10 million cars have been recalled for various problems. verizon is paying customers charged with a mystery feet.
