barry simms has been covering the trial since day one. he joins us with more on tonight's verdict. >> this was definitely a tough struggle for the jurors. on wednesday they said they were deadlocked. today they finally did reach their verdict. annette harris and her two children are claiming the verdict as a victory. >> this is a message to the criminals of baltimore city that they can just not get away with murdering someone and think they are going to walk away free. >> i am very happy that this particular time in our city's history has now been closed, hopefully by this verdict. >> jurors had no comment as they left the courthouse. over.aid, i am glad it's earl convicting the young men on most of the 29 counts against them. another defendant in the case

was found not guilty of murder, but jurors determine he was guilty of the other charges including conspiracy, assault, and handgun violations. >> obviously i am ecstatic my client was found not guilty of the murder. i am very disappointed that he was found guilty of involvement in the robbery. >> guiterrez was killed september 20, 2008 -- ken harris was killed september 20 it, 19 .8 at first the prosecutor believes williams fired a shot, but in the end told jurors and no one really knew who did it. >> that state could not prove, as you pointed out, the pull the trigger. what was clear from the

testimony and from the video evidence is that it was not mr. collins. >> the close surveillance video shows two men wearing bandannas and the other wearing a mask. all three run out the back door following the robbery. the dna of williams was found on the mask and that of the other two was found on bandannas and latex gloves. >> i thought the trial, the way the evidence went, we had won at trial. i thought my client would be found not guilty. i can only thank the jury for putting in the time they did and for finding that verdict. >> jerome williams defense attorneys said media attention drove this high-profile case. >> my client is a strong young man. greg sentencing is set for

october 19, and the defense is considering an appeal. barry simms, wbal-tv 11 news. >> meanwhile, opening arguments in a baltimore county murder trial are just now getting underway. then as testo is charged with -- dennis testo is charged with killing his wife. >> during opening statements, prosecuting attorneys described the case as a jigsaw puzzle with the peace missing. her body has never been found, but they told jurors that they will prove that dennis testo killed his wife. the state describes him as a desperate man with money problems. prosecutor attorney said he knew his wife was having an affair and he was angry. on the day she disappeared in 2005, tracy was supposed to attend a motley crue concert in

washington, d.c., but she never made it. cloudy surveillance video from a nearby hotel shows the car drive up and an unidentified person walk away. several of tracy's friends and family members testified in court today that she was not the type of person to just pick up and leave her life, and she was in constant communication. prosecutors say they will present dozens of recorded conversations that will provide jurors with the motive for the case. they say tracy wanted dennis out of her life and her home, and he was desperately trying to hold on. after court, his attorney said the case was not provable beyond a reasonable doubt. >> the facts just do not add up to a conviction in this case. this is what our argument is. >> to prove its case, the state

does not have to produce a body or provide a particular method of homicide. it does need to prove that dennis testo killed or willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation. the trial is expected to last for about a week. >> and annapolis high school student has been charged with an adult, accused of sexually assaulting a classmate. tory reed was invested wednesday after investigators say he grabbed a juvenile victim, for stirring into a wooded area, and raped her. investigators believe he attack the girl after she rejected his advances. >> at that time, he became angry and picked up a stick and threw it at her, knocking her to the ground. at that time that she fell to the ground, he maintained control of her on the ground and committed the sexual assault. >> reed is currently being held

without bond. >> tonight we are awaiting autopsy results on a woman whose body was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft. authorities believe the woman was homeless and was living in the building. they are not sure if she accidentally fell down a shaft or if she was murdered and her body dumped there. >> some growth and some lost. the new jobs report released today showed that while there was some hiring last month, it was outpaced by job losses. the unemployment rate is holding steady at 9.6%. that is with midterm elections less than a month away. >> at a maryland company, obama tried to build on the fact that the private sectors of job gains

in september. >> we have now seen nine straight months of private sector job growth. in all, more than 850,000 private sector jobs gained this year. >> adobe admitted those were tempered by losses in the public sector, like temporary census workers, and unemployment steady at 9.6%. the president slammed republicans for holding up the small business vote this summer, urging extensions to the middle class and not the wealthy. >> the only piece of economic news that folks still looking for work want to hear is you are hired. >> i think that my story is set right now. >> for republicans like john boehner, that is the bottom line going into the midterms. >> it is about the jobs our

complete with numbers a lot of details, teachers like carla mccloy and peter redgrave, in his third year on the job, talked about the proposal. >> the concept of having to go back to school to earn additional credits is a little bit daunting. you figure you got your masters, you have your plus 30. >> i believe the intention of the contract is worth while, but it is a matter of guarding out the details in a way that makes sense to me. >> it is a three-year deal with the 4.5% raise over the same period. the district wants to eventually link teacher pay to student achievement. >> they are trying to tie that to the work that people are doing both inside and outside the classroom. it is unclear to me at this point exactly how that is going

the deputy national security adviser will step into that role now. jones retired in 2007 after more than 30 years in the military and made clear that he only intended to serve for two years. >> a new study estimates the cost of obesity among american workers has now topped $73 billion a year. duke university researchers say that is the total of employee medical costs, lost productivity because of health problems, as well as absence from work. altogether the annual cost of obesity are almost $70,000 for each of these woman and $15,000 for each obese man. the findings have implications for employers who must pay rising insurance fees for those workers. chronicles parents raising an autistic child. there are four major signs and symptoms of autism. >> i kind of always knew something was not quite right. she says her infant son jackson never smile. he cried a lot and barely made eye contact with other people. >> it was depressing there for a little bit. i was blaming myself, like what did i do wrong when i was pregnant. >> when jackson turn one year old, she says his behavior became even more unusual. he obsessively stared at lights, constantly should his head back and forth, and had his hand in his mouth all the time during >> he was spinning in circles, doing the hand to mouth, staring at the line, shaking his head, and i did not want to go out in public. >> dr. struggle to understand

what was wrong with jackson. nobody could find anything physically wrong with him. then he saw a neurologist to put all the signs and symptoms together. jackson had autism. >> we want to identify children as early as possible. early intervention is extremely important. the earlier we can start, often the better we can do. >> the doctor says there are 40 symptoms that can help parents diagnose children with autism. >> first we look at the progression of developments. >> children who start speaking but then suddenly stopped using words can show a slowing of development. another symptom, children who cannot comprehend what people are saying. >> their understanding of language, their ability to follow simple directions early on, their ability to respond to their name.

>> the third symptom is an unusual communication. the doctor says this can be exhibited by children who do not ask for thinks really. instead, they might demonstrate what they want physically. last, she says to watch for repetitive behaviors. >> behaviors like lining things up, jumping up and down repetitively, and doing repetitive things with toys. >> jackson has been working with a therapist for a month now. they come to his home 10 hours a week to teach him about language and communication. his mother says she has already seen big changes in her son. >> improvement i have seen is things i have been trying to get him to do for a year. he is doing them in two weeks. >> doctors say if you have any concerns about your child's health mentally or physically, it that cannot -- it cannot wait to do it sooner rather than later. >> about half of us yawn when we

far northern sections of new england. we are in a dry weather moat around here. it is hard to find any cloud cover for many miles around the baltimore area. all that sunshine helped get temperatures a little above normal today. in the mid-60s's adding western maryland, low to mid-70's in baltimore. down toward college park, and temperatures in the upper 7's in spots around there. the temperatures will fall quickly through the evening and end up 47-54 by saturday morning. you can pretty much pick out where the strong high-pressure sell is. it wipes out all the clouds and rain chances. but into the lakes and down into the carolinas and the gulf coast, high pressure is in charge.

all the rain will stay to our north and we may see a cloud or to trying to come down out of pennsylvania through parts of maryland in the afternoon and evening. it may even be hard to find that as a front will be very dry as it makes its way through. the early part of next week, we start to see some showers north and west of us that might reach baltimore later monday evening. until they get here, really nice october weather. 72-77 tomorrow. out on the bay, the winds will be light in a west to northwesterly direction. but beautiful weekend for the armed lori festival out in deep creek. lots of sun and a few scattered clouds. this same scenario all up and down the chesapeake bay. the lower eastern shore,

beautiful weather there, maybe a couple of degrees cooler with mostly sunny skies. from ocean city all the way down to somerset county. we are keeping an eye on hurricane otto. the showers and thunderstorms building up around the center of it, and an eye becoming visible. winds are now up to 80 miles an hour. the good thing is is continuing to move out into the open waters of the atlantic and will continue into that path into the early part of next week. 75 tomorrow, a mile and sunny day, a beautiful saturday. beautiful weather for football on sunday, 72 degrees at kickoff with mostly sunny skies. monday evening and tuesday morning, a slight chance for a shower.

>> horses left to die from starvation or dehydration. tonight the owner of those forces is facing criminal court animal abuse charges. you may remember the story from a month ago. >> while those courses are recovering, others did not make it. charges have now been filed. rob roblin is live in the newsroom with that story. >> the woman who ran the horse rescue form is in jail at this hour. she has been charged with numerous animal cruelty charges. it was almost a month ago when eight very sick courses arrive from what was supposed to be a rescue farm in west virginia. they were starving and close to death. >> this course should weigh between 1000 and 1,200 pounds, and he probably weighs 750 at

the most. >> mary o'brien was charged with more than 50 counts of animal cruelty. >> she was taking care of the horses, and we had reports and she was doing a very good job up until recently when this all occurred. now the motive in what had occurred with her in the past couple of months we are unsure of at this time. >> one of the horses brought here died. some are doing much better. >> they are hanging in there. there is a lot of hope and support. i would say they are doing great. >> others, like zodiac, are still fighting for their life. >> when they laid down, when they are this week and deteriorated, their body cannot support the weight of their

skeletal structure. this horse is a survivor. he has been down on the ground, thrashing, too weak to stand up, and he gets back up and place every time. i am really hopeful for him. >> bond on mary o'brien has been set at $280,000. >>altimore city hopes to serve as a national model for sexual assault investigations. the mayor's office along with the baltimore city police department have been awarded a grant from the governor's office of crime control and prevention. it will fund a training for city police on sexual assault investigations, public safety announcements, and analysis. the mayor says the city will be better able to identify and arrest in sexual assault cases.

>> a jury returned the verdict today against 17-year-old jerome williams this morning. a third suspect was convicted of assault, robbery, and hand gun violations, but not murder. barry simms will have a live update tonight at 6. two suspects charged in what was called the largest drug case in baltimore city are now out on bail. an extensive marijuana growing observation -- operation was found in a warehouse. it had a street value of nearly $35 billion. both suspects face charges of possession with intent to distribute. the unemployment rate has topped

9.5% for the longest stretch .ince the 1930's' the gains from last month or offset by layoffs. >> bank of america has decided to halt the state of foreclosed homes in all 50 states. this comes just days after local leaders sent a letter to lenders calling on them to stop all foreclosures until the review their procedures. some experts say this move could throw the real-estate industry into chaos. >> bank of america says it will actually continue to foreclose on homeowners behind on mortgage payments, but just will not sell the property until it can verify the foreclosure documents are accurate. >> at the ended the day, this is forcing people out of their houses. they have to do it right. >> the decision follows a week
