[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> new psalmist baptist church in baltimore has been a fixture in the community. they have a new look. joining us to talk about that is bishop walter thomas sr. welcome. nice to have you.

tell us about this new building for you. >> the lord has moved us up to the scene area. we moved out of the comedic into a business park. it has been a tremendous opportunity any tremendous blessing for us. now we can do a lot of things we could not to before. i'm real excited about that. >> where are you? >> we are right in the heart of the seton business park. for people near lochearn, on the other side of the wall on patterson avenue. >> not far from northwest plaza and the american red cross is over their. >> both injunctions of the red cross border us. the national law office is in one place. the blood office is the other

place and we are between them. >> you are near the subway. no excuses. >> people can come to church. nor reason to stay home. we have over 1200 parking spaces. we have parking at the empty a lot -- m tta lot. folks can get in. we have free morning services, 7:15, 9:45. it is a lot of opportunity. we're excited with what this will all of austin to do. one of the things on sunday, we have an hour -- two veterans. we're putting to get a veterans ministry. our veterans will take a large part of the service on sunday. we do veterans day. every day. they put in a lot of time to make it possible for us to have the freedoms we enjoy.

sometimes they don't get the credit they deserve. we have a youth outreach program. we have redesigned our children's area. it will be a place where children can come and just loved being cured with our -- to seniors. we're beginning a program to bring together all of the parents who have children in sporting events all over the city. the church cannot support the sporting activities that our members have -- the church can support the sporting activities that are members have. the church is about 170,000 square feet. we were in a facility about 63,000 square feet. this is three times as large. we have a banquet room, chappell, a computer lab, classrooms, state-of-the-art television and radio production

area. we produce in high-definition. we televise in high-definition. it is exciting. >> it is not just a place for people to get their spiritual souls fed. it is a place for resources. >> the whole family -- our ministry is about giving them the tools they need to accomplish the tasks that are in front of them and do it first of all to the glory of god can to help other people realize what is capable with god's power. we teach people and train people and bringing in the resources that make people feel strong. we had about 500 men last night for our men's activities, strengthening men, developing the programs that they will be a part of. next week we'll have a large number of women. the fall -- the following week,

young adults. we want to draw people but also to strengthen them once they are drawn. we do not just want to say come to us. we want to say, we're coming to you. >> anytime 1 so many people need assistance. it is a great place to be able to network and find help. >> we have a couple of projects. we have project 100. we feed 100 families every month for an entire month. we purchased the food and would make sure they have food for one month. the next month, we take another 100 families. we have been doing that for about three years. now we have project 200 where we will try to help people get quality jobs, jobs that were comparative -- comparable to the ones they had before the recession hit. that is what we are looking for to be able to do.

>> how are you able to make this happen? say this, but the lord does district is unbelievable what god did. we had no intention of leaving. but the city wanted to purchase our party so they could to end expansion. that necessitated our looking for a new location. this required us to do it far more expensive project than what we would have wanted. god just made it happen. we moved into the other week on time, on budget we met our financial obligations. it is exciting to be able to tell people this is what god did. i think the lord did it so people could come and see the possibilities that exist when you commit to him. >> we have to take a break.

>> welcome back. we were joined by bishop walter thomas sr. of new psalmist baptist church. we are talking about your move to your new community in northwest baltimore. was it difficult -- some things make it easy for you to move. believing that community at a time what is about to go through some major changes. >> there are a lot of churches still there in the area. they will probably pick up a large part of the work of ministering to the new residents who moved into that area.

we are excited about the opportunity and the possibility for where we are now. we're moving into a neighborhood that people are excited about having a church moved in, excited about having the opportunity to work with us. we bring some resources to the table that i think will be beneficial for the community, and the community brings needs that we think we can help work with. i am excited about the opportunity that we are going to have in this new location. >> how did new psalmist come to be? >> back in 1999, new psalmist baptist church was founded. another church cannot of new psalmist baptist church, and i came from that church. it is like a child's of the daughter church came back to

pass for the mother church. we started in 1899, a very small congregation. we move to perish alley. i came to the church at north avenue in druid hill. from then, -- it has been growing steadily all along. >> baltimore has been known as the city of churches. there's a church on every corner in the city. what makes baltimore that type of environment? west baltimore is a city where many persons trouble from the south. when the exodus began and people started their journey north. many of them dropped off in washington and baltimore. baltimore had a conducive the spirit for churches and it had powerful creatures. it has always had a history of powerful creatures an activist preachers. the kind of came together.

i do not know if anybody has done a study. it always has had its powerful preachers. the two kind of give birth to eight revivals spirit in baltimore. that is the thing that happened. you will find a church as a worker at one is popping up every time you turn around. >> how are people receiving churches in this day and age? are they finding it a place to suit their souls -- to suit the -- soothe their souls/ >> it was almost automatic. people grew up and came to church. we started seeing a change. degeneration of persons started staying away from the church. at the same time, we started talking about babies having babies. the maturity that lead children to church was no longer there.

esol sweatsuits instead of a dress suits. -- you saw sweatsuit instead of a dress suits. persons began to become so individually conscious. churches are a social conscience. church did not become the place where i want to go because it is not about me. it is about us. with the collapse of the economy and the latter part, people -- and with the tsunami is an the other things, people began reevaluating their goals and started saying, maybe i do need church. but then they are not coming from a church background. it takes a longer time to help them understand what it is they are looking for and help them understand how the church in jesus christ is the answer to that. >>are you seeing the traditional families, or the woman of the household come first and then gradually

everybody else comes with it? " we see everything. we see the father is bringing their families. we see fathers bringing their children. we see mothers bring their children. we see individuals come by themselves. we are beginning to see more and more this family sense of need. single mothers, single fathers, husbands and wives couples. we want everybody to have a part of this. >> people -- you were there not just on sunday. you were there 365. you have a new and today servers. >> every wednesday at 12:00 noon. we started that in 1981 when my son was born part of we have been going straight through. we still have a date service. they have been packing out our chapel every wednesday.

dedicated to ceramic art. the museum has a new exhibit. joining us today is mary cloonan, the exhibition's director. welcome. i have been to clayworks. you're down at mount washington. what is your whole purpose and waters of things people can do? >> which have so many activities that you can participate in part we are a nonprofit organization. we just celebrate our 30th anniversary. we have been serving the community with education so people can take classis, beginners, advanced.

we haven't on site gallery so people can purchase art. we serve the community at large through our community arts program. we go out and bring ceramics class to underserved populations that do not necessarily have the opportunity to work in clay. we have a satellite site in west baltimore. we have our main exhibition space, which i'm in charge of, that brings rotating shows from artists outside the region, to give you a taste of the possibilities in ceramic art. >> and so you will not just closed "body and soul." they are closing this week, as we speak. on thecanno still see them internet. >> "body and soul" was curated by a ceramics professor in

california who has more challenging, a figurative work. we thought he would be a good match to bring some contemporary sculptural work to baltimore and show people what is possible. there are so many possible interpretations of that. we chose the title as the jazz standard body and soul. so that is still on view at on our website. scriptorium is my solo show. we're given the opportunity to show up in our solar zero galleries. and so in the gallery, i chose to turn it into a library. it is a flowing library. endidea of the world's within pages. it is all made out of clay.

>> and the new one that is starting up, winter fasest. >> it is one of our most popular shows. it celebrates the guest of art. -- it celebrates the bigifts of art. they show in our galleries. in addition to the holiday, which will have the local artists who represent, it just gives people an opportunity to see the wood fire work from someone went out in texas. the idea that there is so much inspiration and creativity out there and you can bring this home and give to someone you loved. >> now is the time to visit clayworks and design some wonderful presents. >> 8 call made peace always fix.

you cannot -- a homemade piece alwayas fits. it is also a great way to give a gift certificate to somebody who wants to try it but has not had that chance -- birthday parties. there is so much to do there. people don't necessarily take the chance or time to explore their creative side. >> you are a popular place for birthday parties. kids are excited for a party. when you get them in there, what is that like? >> it is fantastic and loud. it is really amazing to take a lump of clay and give it to somebody, give them some instructions and have them just

grow and bloom and create something that a lot of times they are supplies to they made, they are proud and surprised and excited and they cannot wait to take it home. a two will be -- it will be two weeks because it has to try and get fired. and the adults. they don't think about birthday parties. they should try that. >> is baltimore a conducive place for something like baltimore clayworks because of the way they embraced the art? we have artscape and other things. >> i think baltimore is a great town for the arts, a visual and music. there is a lot have been in here. you can get to some of the larger cities outside. it feels like you are welcome and is home for people coming
