how do william and kate feel about sharing their news with the world. we're going to hear from him straight ahead. >> of course everyone is talking about that ring, an 18 caret sapphire surrounded by diamonds and it was princess dianas. we're going to talk to one of kate's friends who knew about the engagement long before the rest of the world. "today" national correspondent natalee morales as made her way there overnight. >> reporter: could the headlines be any bigger or bolder here? you see the daily telegraph, kate's very special, the daily mail, "with this ring, i thee wed" they have been waiting for a long time for this announcement. of course as you mentioned, the

spotlight shining brighter than ever and the couple did not disappoint as they shared their first interview as royals now newly engaged. the royal couple who may one day be king and queen yesterday talked about their engagement. how did william pop the question? >> we had a room for holiday in africa. and it was very romantic. >> did he get down on one knee? >> prince william, why did it take you so long to propose? >> i didn't realize that i would -- the timing is right now. we're very, very happy and i'm very glad that i have done it. >> reporter: in her first interview before the world, a

rather nervous kate talked about becoming part of the royal family? >> i'm taking it in my stride and william is a great teacher so he'll be there to help me along the way. >> reporter: and the sapphire and diamond ring, it was william's mother princess diana's. >> i heard the news, it was absolute absolutely wonderful. >> i'm just so happy for both of them. >> a cheeky reference to the abili eight years the couple have been dating, william and kate talked to tom bradby about how they're feeling. >> you both look incredibly happy and relaxed. >> we are, we're like ducks,

calm on the surface, but a pi little peeky under the water. >> were you going to do this the whole time? >> i thought about it for a while. but as every guy knows it takes a bit of motivation to get going and it felt really right in africa. >> i didn't know anything at all. i thought he maybe had thought bit. i'm very excited. >> people are bound to ask this question, but children, do you want lots of children? see what comes? what's your -- >> i think we'll take it one step at a time, we'll get over the marriage and then look at the kids, but obviously we want a family. so we'll have to start thinking about that. >> reporter: now of course the royal wedding planning is already well underway, no date set just yet, but of course as you have heard, there's talk there could be a spring or

summer 2011 wedding. prince william is also said to be favoring westminster abbey where his mother was married and where the funeral of his mother was held. many here are already talking about this wedding as being the wedding of the century. more than a billion worldwide are expected to tune in to this one. >> natalee morales, thank you very much. pierce morgan is the editor of the daily mirror. tom bradley is itv's royal correspondent who scored the int interview with william and kate. >> you're the first journalist in the world to sit down with the couple. he described themselves as two ducks in the water, on the

surface, very calm, but underneath both feet are going like crazy. >> we had a half an hour before hand where things were pretty relaxed. in all our minds, when his parents got married, there was this toe curling awful interview where prince charles said whatever love is. it was played and played over the years. so we were all there before hand, kind of conscious that we didn't want to do that. it's a normal day, it's not a rottwyler interview, people are curious about you, they want to know about you, i've just got to lead you through it. >> do you think that they were coached at all, particularly kate, or katharine, we should call her right now. >> they definitely weren't coached. william is quite the polished media performer these days.

if you think about it, the queen's never done an interview. prince charles never does an interview. william does live interviews, he's actually very, very polished so he doesn't need any media training. kate didn't have any and she was nervous, i mean this is a first-ever interview on tv and it's something that you not only you know hundreds of millions of people, but it will be played back for years and years to come. there's hardly a more intimidating interview. i thought she did actually well actually. >> you have covered the royals extensively over the years, you spent some time with princess diana and william when he was 12 years old. and william talked specifically about humor and kate. do you see any similarities with the relationship on any level? >> i had lunch with william and

diana when he was about 13 and a half, i was struck by the relationship. but there's this crazy royal humor they have, because they live such ridiculous lives in this mad gold initiate bowl. you can see william saying i'm a wonderful co and being apparently quite boastful, but obviously he's not like that. william is a very independent minded guy. i think that interview, first of all, congratulations the credit interview scoop. it would have been better if i had done it. but it wasn't bad. but actually to be serious, it's great for britain and for the world that we're in this terrible recession, people are losing their jobbings and stuff. along comes a good old-fashioned british royal wedding. this is going to be the wedding of the millennium.

>> this is our royal family. tom during the interview, prince william said that they're going to forge their own way, nobody should expect kate to be like his mom. so what should we expect from kate going forward? >> one of the reasons i think it's taken them so long to get here is that they have put a lot of thought into this and, you know, the charles and diana years were very crazy and william had a better view of that than anybody else. he doesn't want to repeat that. but famous last words. i would eat my hat if they ever got divorced. i hope they'll be happy, i'm sure they will. but he wants to be like his grandparents to be there through thick and thin, they know that divorce is not an option.

they've been careful about this, they have been thoughtful about this. they'll do all that, but they'll retreat very gratefully as soon as they can into private. both of them, particularly william, a very, very quiet recently focused on wanting to lead the life that he wants to lead that they want to lead. >> what is really significant, i think is that there was apathy growing about the royal family, young people really weren't that engaged with them. what is great about this announcement is that everyone is now engaged with the royal family, the monarchy. and it's great for the royal family, americans love a good old-fashioned wedding and what is better than this young prince, i think everybody's going to be very proud about this. i was very proud yesterday, and having known diana quite well,

she would be looking down saying what a great match. coming up, we'll have much more on the royal couple and the ring and we'll have an interview live with one of kate's friends who was in on the news. the brutal murder of an american tourist at the popular mexican resort. the victim's husband, a reality tv producer has now been arrested and is due in court today. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. last night u.s. marshals took bruce beresford-redman into custody at his home. for the first time, he's now under arrest. the question now, for how long? for months, bruce beresford redman has been flee in this country, spending time los angeles with his children but now he's under arrest for

murder. his wife's body was found dumped in a hotel sewer in cancun. authorities are now outlining this murder case against him. they say evidence shows he was having an affair. on the night of monica's murder, hotel guests heard her screaming for help from the couple's room. forensics teams later found blood on the bed, pillow and on the balcony. bryce had scratches on both hands, behind his ear, on his left skin and on his right ankle. mexican prosecutors say after monica vanished, he phoned a friend as i was he was reading from a script and was very calm like he had just lost hiss dog. after being a producer on shows like "survivor," bruce beresford

was the only suspect in the case. th from day one, monica's family has blamed bruce for her murder and went to mexico to try do get him arrested there. >> we love our sister and we want justice. >> monica's family say they're relieved by bruce's arrest, but bruce's lawyer has vowed to fight extradition back to mexico. >> the odds are that he probably is going to be extradited because they're going to have to show that it would be a gross miscarriage of justice for him to be extradited back to mexico. and that's a pretty tough standard. >> reporter: in the meantime, the couple's children remain in the custody of his parents. bruce's father says his major concern is with his grandchildren. >> the children will be protected.

as long as we live. >> although beresford redman's legal team will fight extradition if that process even happens, it won't come quickly, legal experts say the process could be tied up here in court for weeks if not months. >> it's now 7:14, once again, here's meredith. >> now to washington where it's decision day on capitol hill as democrats and republicans hold leadership elections, and house democrats have avert what could have been a messy power struggle. >> reporter: well, it is another election day rolling around here, house members will pick a handful of leadership positions. nancy pelosi is an expert vote counter. but we do expect a challenge that will end up being just symbolic to her authority. right now we have pelosi and one of her long-time allies, charlie rangel both facing pressure for very different reasons.

stepping into what she called a most daunting role. she's attended her fair share of weddings and now after eight years of waiting, kate middleton is finally looking at walking down the aisle herself with her prince. they were a couple doing couple things. >> we went to university and it would always come with a little bit of angst. >> they even graduated together in 2005. kate's good looks and her love of sports have always chimed with william and made her a popular friend. >> there's no pretentiousness. >> reporter: it may be just those qualities that kept william coming back even after they briefly split up three years ago. >> she's got a very good sense of humor. >> reporter: now the middle

class girl who comes from a close knit family has to prepare for a future as a full-time princess and that will bring some challenges. >> when you marry prince william, a lot is expected of you, you will be spending the rest of your life in the media spotlight. >> reporter: kate will have to share her life with a protection officer. there will be tiaras to wear, jewels to protect. and she'll have to shake innumerable hands. >> she's been introduced gradually to this and her age and her experience will be a tremendous advantage. but it's certainly going to change her life. >> reporter: those who know her say she's got what it takes to deal with life in a guilded cage. >> i think a princess needs to be able to blend in with every part of society. going into any country.

if anyone can handle being a princess, then kate will be able to handle it. >> reporter: and while the comparisons with princess diana are of course inevitable, as prince william said, there is no pressure really to fit into his mother's shoes, as he said. but interesting to know and to point out to you, matt, that ring which was dianas was a perfect fit. >> all right, interesting tidbit, natalee. jessica hey is a long-time friend of kate middleton. good morning. jessica, let me start with you, i know you went to school with kate, you have known her since you were 13, you played sports together. how did she break the news of this engagement to you? how did you find out? >> it was by phone, but it was a while ago, quite a while ago, but nothing could be said so i kept my mouth firmly shut.

>> was it lahard to keep the secret? it was one of the best kept secrets over the last few decades. how hard was it? >> if you know kate, you would be able to keep a secret. she tells me something personal, you're able to keep it. she's such a supportive person, i couldn't wish for a better friend. >> people really want to know what she's going to be like as a princess and perhaps the future queen of england. talk to me a little bit about her qualities, you say she's a supportive person. what else do we need to know about kate that tells us how she's going to do in the role of princess, for example? >> i think what will make her a great princess is she's very grounded and she cares about people. but more often than not, she will do what she wants to do, she's very, very independent, she's very headstrong and i think that will stand her in good steady in the years to come. >> we talk about her as an

individual, and william as an individual, you're one of the few people that know about them as a couple. can you describe their dynamic as a couple both in front of the camera and away from the camera. >> they're a very, very normal couple. they're the kind of couple you would see at a restaurant. they're a very down to earth couple, they absolutely adore each other. i can't even say how much they feed each other. they both just mesh well together. >> ken, let me turn to you and it's almost unimaginable what she is now going to face in terms of public scrutiny, you've been there, you've seen it, tell me a little bit of what's in store for kate middleton. >> i think just despite all that's been said about kate,the perfect woman for william. undoubtedly what's happening now is the beginning of a huge change in her life. simply because of the huge media

attention we saw yesterday. and this will be ongoing in the months ahead to the date of the wedding et cetera. and with that comes a security package. sadly in the world that we now live in, that's exactly what's going to have to happen, so it will, despite all that's being said, her life will change dramatically. >> then there's this idea of the media and the paparazzi, we saw what happened with princess diana, do you think the rules of engagement have been changed at all? have lessons been learned after the death of princess diana? >> i don't think the rules of engagement have changed. in the last ten years, media interest in the british world family has waned dramatically, particularly after the death of diana. this is sort of a rebirth of that. one thing is for certain william aged 28 and kate the same sort of age begins a new future for

the royal family and they will generate an appeal to that generation that will take them into the 21st century. in the last ten years, the whole world has changed dramatically, so it brings security even greater and nearer to focus upon. >> jessica, you say you knew about the engagement before any of us did, so do you also know the wedding date? >> i could not give that kind of information out. but it will be sometime next year, that's what all i'm going to say. >> not even for me, jessica? >> don't try and charm me now. it will be definitely sometime next year. >> jessica and ken, thank you both very much. i appreciate your time. >> and you can see more about the royal couple on a special "dateline" william and kate.

available now for $11.99. only at target. back at 7:43 on this morning on "today" investigates, could your favorite seafood be dangerous? wait until you see where some of it comes from. jeff rossen is here to tell us what he found out. >> reporter: i know you love seafood, but most of it doesn't even come from here. in fact 80% of fish and 90% of the shrimp actually come from overseas. this morning our "today" investigation has found some of your seafood may have toxic chemicals, causing serious health issues. sauteed, fried or fresh, we love seafood, appetizing for sure, until you see where some of it comes from. this video shot by a u.s. advocacy group shows dirty sewage water used to raise

seafood in vietnam. the fish pumped with toxic antibiotics and drugs just to keep them alive, boosting production and driving down costs. >> would you consider this a public health threat? >> absolutely. >> reporter: ron smith is with the department of -- there's several chemicals that are added to seafood. chemicals so toxic to humans, they're banned in all foods. >> in some cases, 40% to 50% of our tests will come out positive. >> that's a disturbing number. >> it is to me that's high we continue to test. >> reporter: similar results all targeting seafood with the worst record of contamination, shrimp, catfish, crab meat.

in many cases officials say ending up in our country's restaurants and grocery stores. >> unfortunately, consumers can't tell if any of these compounds are in their seafood. you can't smell it, you can't taste it, you can't cook it out. >> reporter: so how dangerous are these chemicals? scientists say overtime eating this tainted seafood could cause cancer, even birth defects. the risks are long-term and not fully understood. while the fda is responsible for keeping the nation's food supply safe, our "today" investigation found it tests less than 2% of imported seafood. >> they're not going to get caught. i mean they're sending tons of seafood to this country and if you only catch a small percentage of it, why would they stop? >> reporter: does the fda need to do more? >> i would certainly suggest that the fda do more. >> reporter: while government tests show u.s. seafood is three of these contaminants, even back

in 2007, this congressional seafood report said that seafood imports remain problematic. the fda declined to speak with us on camera but says it's doing the best it can targeting countries that are repeat offenders and rejecting their products until they're proven safe. yet it keeps happening. according to fda test results, this year alone, 8% of seafood tested from china was tainted and from taiwan, 16% of seafood tested was tainted as well. is that acceptable to you? >> any use of antibiotics is unacceptable. it's been a problem for years and it's not stopping. so what are the importers doing to stop it, to say any

unauthorized use of antibiotics is inappropriate. >> the vast majority of seafood coming in does not exhibit any kind of problems. >> reporter: you're claiming no kind of seafood is making it from overseas on to our dinner table. >> any use of unauthorized antibiotics is appropriate. >> reporter: he says most follow the rules and the problem is being overblown as a trade issue. he says this video of polluted fish ponds and rotting sewage is misleading. it keeps happening year after year after year. while federal law requires grocery stores to publish its country of origin. in restaurants where most of us eat our seafood, it's a different story, most states don't require you to tell you where it's from at all.

>> that's awful, i'm totally in shock. >> we label everything, why wouldn't we label or fish? >> reporter: would you support legislation where we would know no matter where we go where our seafood is coming from? >> studies do not indicate that americans are deeply interested in the source of their fish or other protein. >> reporter: as a consumer, don't i have a right to know where my seafood is coming from, especially knowing what we know now? >> i think that consumers should feel comfortable that fda does a good job. >> reporter: but until more seafood is tested, consumers are at risk. >> it is a cat and mouse game, they quite honestly don't care about the health of united states citizens. >> reporter: some officials say this just isn't a health issue, americans say they're losing jobs because they can't compete with competitors who are selling their seafood much cheaper in

the. assessing damage. downed trees and power lines all over this area, affecting some are your major roads like perring parkway and northern parkway. there has been a makeshift shelter set up at the mount pleasant ice rink. we are expecting mayor stephanie rawlings-blake to arrive at his command center to get an update on this situation. there are power outages and some schools are closed because of this. emergency workers are doing what they can to help residents affected. reporting live, jennifer franciotti. let's send a to traffic pulse 11 and sarah caldwell. >> as we saw behind you, northeast baltimore and parksville are the areas that were hit hardest. we still problems along perring parkway in northern and mclean. putty hill, closures in effect. outlier said the downed tree. -- out by year's end a downed tree. delays coming out of the city.

attention. won't kate middleton will exposed to a lot more of that than even princess diana was? >> remember these are two very different people. when the prince of wales married princess diana at the time, he was 44, she was 20. she had never had a formal job apart from part-time in a nursery and she was suddenly thrust into the royal family. in addition to that, she had had an adolescence which was very, very challenging. she developed eating disorders. she had been through her parents acrimonious breakup and subsequent divorce and so as a consequence of that, when lady diiana married princess charles, she went into an undermined state. kate has known prince william for 10 years, they both went to

the same university, they both studied the same academic subject, they have had a commonality of experience so i think that she is much better prepared for the challenges than diana ever had. >> let me bring you into the conversation here, you were at the photo-op yesterday with all the flashing bulbs going on, how do you kate or katharine, how do you think she handled that now, how do you think she handled that media attention? >> i thought she handled it brilliantly, meredith. at the end of the day, we have never heard from kate middleton before yesterday. it was the most extraordinary afternoon of my royal reporting career because they both did a briefing before hand, the context of those conversations i can't actually tell you, but they were all covered in the news around the world. she was there as an equal. it was very interesting, it wasn't a case of william looking at her off afternoon and covers her back, she spoke to the press by herself, he spoke to the

press by himself, they k5i8 together on that sofa. but what we were presented with was a mature, glamorous classy woman who i thought had star quality oozing from her ever pore. >> but the marriage of princess diana has been -- how does kate emerge from out from underneath that? >> when we saw the interview yesterday, the one point at which she became a little bit uncomfortable was the question about how is she going to fill diana's shoes? how is anyone going fill diana's shoes. william was very protective with her and said that kate's going to make her own path. of course comparisons are going to be made, but as martin pointed out, two women at different stages of their life when they're coming into this royal marriage. kate is her own woman, she's got potential, she's clearly a bright girl, she shares diana's glamour, she's a designer's

>> live, local, latebreaking. this wbal-tv 11 news today in baltimore. >> good morning. i am mindy basara but we of the update of breaking news of a possible tornado touched down overnight. john franciotti is live in baltimore or the mayor is -- jennifer franciotti is live in baltimore were the mayor is about to hold a press conference. >> we are in the northeast part of baltimore city to mcclean and fleetwood. i will step out of the way so that you can see the mayor and other officials. i apologize if you see other stations in our view but we are all together. here is the mayor right now. >> good morning, everybody. it appears we had a tornado touched down in this area. we had extensive damage this morning. we have had no loss of life. tremendous amount of property damage. it looks like residents help each other out here.

they did an unbelievable job in search and rescue. combined efforts of citizens and the government, it looks like we did well escaping injury. the rest is kind of distorting everything out. we agree to the mayor. and she got here prepare -- briefed the mayor, she got here we kept for up to date through the morning. the weekend for a unifie -- that we gave her a unified command briefing. >> and again, this was a tornado? >> the national weather service has criteria, what is a tornado, what is not a at this point, i don't think it makes a difference. whatever it was, extremely high winds, unbelievable amounts of damage and a quick period of time. >> can you describe what you see in this neighborhood?

>> icy roads that have been lifted off of buildings and along a block away -- i see groups that lifted off of buildings and blown a block away. it's an absolute miracle that we are not here talking about serious injury and death, based on the passover that i have seen, the damage. an absolute miracle. i am pleased that we're all on board. we of the emergency shelter set up. everyone that needs to be here is yhere to make sure that the residents are taken care of. everything that needs to be done to keep people in the loop on what we're doing minute by minute. >> do you have any idea how many homes up affected, how many people have been moved out? >> we have over 1000 power outages. i don't know, 100 homes? >> we will make an assessment of all the houses and give you

details on what the damages of how many people are going to be displaced but as soon as we get that, we will let you know. >> we know that a child as a possible broken arm. >> we know that there is one injury of an arm. but again, when you see the pictures, and you will see that there will be many stories of someone being and the next room. there is one person who happen not to be at home that would have been dead because the roof came right into her bedroom on her bed. we will hear a lot of those stories, because this damage was horrific and it could have been a series the deadly. we are very blessed that we're not talking about multiple lives being lost. [unintelligible] we're doing everything. we have forestry moving trees, the private owner for spicewood out clearing debris -- for pinewood out clearing debris

. we are clearing cars so we can make for the roads are clear. everyone is working together. unfortunately, we have to emergencies, but we do, everyone is doing their part. >> was like for you as you arrive in this neighborhood to see what looks like now? >> no one wants to see this level of damage. again, this is severe property damage. a lot of trees are down. these are people's homes and people's community, and it is going to be devastating and it is going to take a while for us to get people back to normal. many people will not be able to get back to their homes. that is a significant amount of unrest and trauma. i'm grateful for the red cross, and supporting these families

-- the red cross is coming in and supporting these families. we're coming up on holidays, and these people will not have their homes to have thanksgiving at it while we every bus and if all that we got serious injury -- we are very blessed and grateful that don't have serious injury, people's lives will not be back trouble for some time. >> winds are getting stronger so there is additional safety concern. >> we have all of our inspectors out inspecting these buildings. many of these, because there is seated in the back of the wind's going out, are structurally unsound, we have these factors that are to be out all morning inspecting these properties and market the ones that are on site so that we don't have any further of injury or lives lost because people want to go back in, but if they are unstable, they run stable and we are all aware of that. -- they are unstable and we're all aware of that.

we're doing everything we can to get the tree is clear and the debris off the road. we have everything that we have at our disposal were taken to protect open. -- everything we have at our disposal to get the votes back open. whole sections of the apartment complex were lifted off and blown a block away. there are two-by-fours that look like spears into the side of buildings. people could get it right there -- could have been right there and seriously injured and killed that is the type of damage i have seen. >> dozens of townhomes -- any plans to make sure those people have a place to stay? >> we have a shelter and now working in concert with the red cross. we will make sure that people have a place to go. they are going to need
