we're not talking about significant loss of life. >> the mayor is amazed and thankful that lives were spared in what many feel was a tornado that touched down in northeast baltimore early wednesday morning. the most significant damage was found at and around the dutch village apartment complex. you can see where the roofs were torn off hundreds of feet. >> i heard this noise and i thought it was a freight train. then i heard things tearing apart. >> residencts were left scared and confused as the storm left the neighborhood in shambles. >> it went through with a force of a freight train. the trees were bending over. my wife was scared half to death. it all happened in about 10 minutes. >> downed trees and power lines

littered the entire area making things very difficult for the power crews. >> we have downed wires, damaged bolls, downfalls. there is a lot of work to be done. -- we had downed wires, damaged and downed poles. >> people were dealing with destroying fences and toppled chimneys. the storms literally came out of nowhere. >> i heard the hail hitting the house and that is what woke me up. i looked out of the window and by the time i looked out of the window, this tree was coming into it. >> the governor and the mayor with other city and state officials remain floored by the damage as they toured the area. it is possible that the area could get federal dollars. they are impressed with what

mother nature did. >> their roofs that were torn off. cars were thrown together as if they were toys. >> the mayor has issued a curfew for this entire area. this is starting right now at 5:00 lasting until 7:00 tomorrow morning. the company that owns the apartment complexes says that they will provide housing for the displaced. the power company plans to have power back for the non condemned buildings by midnight tonight. this is not the only damage caused by the storm. baltimore county saw its share as well. >> you can see behind me this huge tree that was up rooted. this is a common scene in this area. one of the hardest-hit areas was

part of bill. -- parkville. blacks the trees were waving like palm trees. they were waving back and forth and then all of a sudden a big crack. it was coming towards the window and it landed right on the house. >> with wind gusts over 80 miles per hour, lots of people who live here believe that this was a tornado that hit early this morning. >> it was. >> is felt like it was a storm and then the sky lit up. in about 10 seconds, it was awful. >> i think it was a tornado because it hit the tree and the tree came loose and then it came to the front of the house and it pulled up a flagpole that was cemented down. >> you see this trampoline? it was blown from that yard at that house over there.

even though there were downed trees everywhere. >> my husband heard this. by the time he got to the basement, it was gone. >> the storm did not last long but it did a lot of damage and it was very frightening. >> i was scared to death at when i heard that in the overnight, especially the wind. >> it has been a long day of cleaning up here in parkville. >> you have seen the pictures and the damage, tonight some homes are uninhabitable which means that those residents will have to seek shelter elsewhere. we are joined live from northeast baltimore. >> the vast majority of people needing shelter part in the city and about an hour ago, the city announced that they would be providing overnight shelter.

>> the city set up a temporary shelter. on the red cross tells as many as 120 people were taking advantage of the free food and water. many of these victims live in the dutch village apartment complex. >> we are waiting to see what they're going to do. >> this is stressful. this is hard printer you want to go to sleep. >> the problem is that city housing officials say that the damages so extensive, their homes are now hazardous. >> many of these people will not return home. >> in this area will have to be

cleared out before anyone can come back in. we will have the crews and their cleanup and make these final assessments about the situation. >> this is not what they want to hear but they are glad that they are here. >> we are glad that we are alive, no one is dead. that is a blessing. the material stuff can get fixed. >> right now, it is unclear how long it will take those people to get back into their homes or get some kind of housing. the city tells me that if you need shelter, you are asked to check in at the mount pleasant ice rink first and it will be brought in at some point tonight. >> when severe weather strikes, we jumped into high gear and that is true for skype team 11 -- sky team 11.

>> northeast baltimore city. an apartment complex at three units totally destroyed when the roof came off of those buildings. they ended up striking a fourth building causing major damage including wall's collapsing at that location. we were able to notice chimneys that happen collapsed, shingles torn off the roof, the trees knocked down. a lot of areas had shed that were operated and the path of destruction went from -- on up into the baltimore county, up to the beltway and it actually across the beltway at one point. we figure the distance from start to finish was anywhere from three to three and a half miles long and anywhere from half a mile to a mile wide.

>> with storms like last night that comes through in the middle of the night, maybe you are in bed and don't know the storms are approaching, what do you do? how do you get notified? one thing that you can do and the weather service has invested a lot of money, this is a weather radio. this is constantly monitoring the broadcast ban so that when the issue a warning or on a large, the radio automatically turns on and it will start to broadcast the information. they will notify you if there is a watch, a tornado. you hit the button and the information comes in. that is when you scramble and you take cover and you go to your tv or radio station for more information. this will let you know or even wake you up in the middle of the night. they will scare the dogs but at least you know that some severe weather is on the way. in a storm that comes through at

up. it has been big all day long. i am at one of five locations where teachers have been voting since about 7:00 this morning. some city school teachers took their lunch breaks to vote on the new contract. at most locations, there was a few lines. that is what the union had in mind when they added four new voting sites and added to new machines. >> young teachers are motivated and they're helping us to move faster even though we don't have our master's degree. >> the first agreement was turned down by the majority of teachers because they did not understand most of the fine print. >> more people have more information and maybe they feel more comfortable with their choices. >> it is very important. we feel more comfortable now with the vote now that we have more information. >> they are still counting on the union to keep their word

upper 50's and near 60's on the eastern shore. we will see clear skies and the wind will come down to 5-10 miles per hour after midnight and flows from 37 -- lows from 37 to 44. this storm is moving across northern new england. here comes a little bit of a weather disturbance across the plain states. this area will be attracting rapidly through here tomorrow. this will not be as vicious as the last one but this will bring some clouds and a sprinkle of rain snow showers up to the west. behind that, are temperatures will cool off going into friday and the first part of the weekend as the snow showers wind down in the mountains to the west. some great weather to be outside. tomorrow, a mix of clouds and son with a sprinkle possible late in the day. the west wind, 6-12.
