earlier today. >> you can see behind me this tree that is down, this was just up rooted, this is a common scene in part of bill. -- parkville. >> students went home early because there was no electricity. the storm left behind all kinds of damage. many think it was a tornado that came through their neighborhood. >> i think it was a tornado because it hit the tree, the tree can lose and then it came to the front of the house and it pulled a flagpole that was cemented down. >> it looks like it was a storm to me and then the sky lit up. it was awful. >> a huge tree came down on his home. everyone inside was lucky to get

out without any injuries. >> the trees were waving back and forth and all of a sudden a big white crack, i thought that lightning hit the tree. this was not lightning, it must have been the electric. >> this was shattered. this came through the roof. to show you how strong this was, this was blown from that yard and that house over there. the power company was working to restore power. there were no injuries. >> everything was blowing around. the window was not tested out, i feel lucky. >> what to do you think it was? >> definitely. >> we are lucky. we have a handicapped mother in the house. her room is right there. >> my understanding is the

damage there is a fear as well. >> this is just as bad if not worse. we word amazed that no one got killed or hurt because of this storm. the national weather service has yet to determine whether a tornado touched down. there is evidence of one all over the place. the mayor telling us 359 units in this apartment complex, 16 buildings have been condemned, 359 units damage, displacing hundreds of people. >> when i looked out the side, i could have sworn that i saw what looked like a funnel cloud over in this area here. it was raining really hard. >> for the residences, it was a

very terrifying experience. >> i heard this noise. i thought it was a freight train. >> but while it has not been confirmed, this is believed that a tornado touched down in northeast baltimore sometime after 1:00. the damage was intense. the rooms were literally ripped off of three buildings and thrown hundreds of feet. one resident told us that he and his roommate helped to rescue people that were trapped. >> there was one fireman and one police officer and we went up there and we took the people that were trapped off of the top floor. >> the damage was not limited to the apartments.

there was a considerable amount of damage. >> i heard a loud noise coming through here. it was unusual to hear this. the next thing i knew, it was blowing like everything. >> i looked out the back window and the sky was lit up with lightning. it was like a huge fire. >> by afternoon, the governor and the mayor took a tour of the devastation with other top state, local officials behind them. it is possible that the city could get federal funding if needed. in total, 359 apartments were damaged in 16 buildings condemned. >> we are tremendously blast that we are not here talking about significant loss of life. >> the mayor has issued a curfew for this entire area that started at 5:00 tonight.

pg&e hopes to have power restored to this entire area for the non condemn the building. the owner of the apartment complex that says that they will be providing housing. people need a place to stay if they don't have family and friends. >> and because of the damage that we have been showing you was just so extensive, the city felt that it was not safe or possible to let people back into their homes. the city has announced that they are providing overnight shelter. for hundreds of people, this has already been a day of shelter. a lot of damage led to a long and anxious day for hundreds of northeast baltimore residents it

rendered homeless. >> a big flash of light and you heard this. you knew it was a tornado. >> the city says nearly two and 50 people took the advantage of an emergency shelter. food, water, bathrooms and pet care where provided. >> will the city help us get relocated? we are out here, we don't know what will happen to us, we just need some help so we can go home. >> people spend hours waiting. what is that like not knowing? >> stressful. this is hard. you want to go to sleep because you cannot. >> authorities determined it was too unsafe to let people back into their homes. >> clear the area has to be totally cleared out before people can come back again. the game plan is to shut the area down overnight and have the crews in there cleaning up and

earlier in the day there was some incredible pictures. >> this is where a lot of homes have been condemned. the major epicenter of the destruction was at the apartment complexes that are just south of east and northern parkway. three units ended up losing their roof and it crashed into a fourth unit which caused major damage. walls were knocked down, walls have collapsed, roofs were torn off, chimneys were taken off. it was just unbelievable the destruction we were able to see. we followed the path into baltimore county around the area of white cliff road, wentworth road, taylor avenue. the storm continued all the way

across the beltway and ended up in the area of ellis rode and stockwell road. we track to this and we believe that it was about 3 miles of destruction. many families have been impacted from the storm. what you are looking at is crews working aggressively try to get power back. contractors have been working very closely trying to get some of these homes fixed and repaired so that they can come back to their homes. >> want to take a look at your pictures. a fallen tree blocks of the neighbor's driveway. others took matters into their own hands. you can see more photos and send us your own.

charge our students $4 a day to do that and i am reducing this. >> on monday, residents who live along the road, they were holding signs of protest. dr. wilson says he will communicate with the students immediately to help with those parking concerns. >> we did hear from the national weather service this afternoon regarding the storm damage from last night and they have decided that they need to do more investigation. what do you do in the overnight hours when the storms popup menu are completely unaware. one thing that you can use is a weather radio. when an alert is issued, this goes on automatically and sounds an alarm.

it is good to have a weather radio in your house said that in the overnight hours, if something dangers comes your way, this will alert you with one of those radios. temperatures were still quite mild in the wake of that storm. some cooler air is on the way. 62 degrees at the inner harbor. the normal high is only 56. the chill will start to settle in tomorrow afternoon. the wind has been testing at the airport. a wind gust of 46 miles per hour. you can see the wind is beginning to diminish. temperatures are still mild. in the 50's all-around baltimore, as you head up towards hagerstown and low 40's said mchenry and frost bird.

tonight, 37-44. if you look far enough to the northwest, you can see some wintering conditions some of this will try to work its way east. temperatures are back alone normal for a couple of days. one storm is leaving us. a new fast-moving area will cut across the mississippi valley and then head our way. this will be much more week when it comes through. this will grab on to some of the cold air and tried this right into the mid-atlantic. it will be cold enough for snow in the western maryland mountains. we might catch a sprinkle of rain but dry chilly weather coming in to wrap up this work week and it looks like a decent start. a variable cost more because we will start with a piece of sun.
