official, it was a tornado that touched down in northeast baltimore, likely confirming what the folks who don't have a roof over their heads already knew. it is our big story tonight. the national weather service confirmed it was a twister that did touchdown in our area. >> the worst damage was in northeast baltimore. several buildings had to be condemned. hundreds of people were forced into makeshift shelters and many continue to stay there tonight. some did manage to get back to their homes today to collect some of their belongings. let's go to tom tasselmyer who has details on this tornado. >> talking about the tornado that touched down in the early morning hours of wednesday. we do have access to bwi's terminal doppler. the image clearly shows the hook echo from 1:33 a.m., and you can

see the precipitation in this thunderstorm being wrapped around that funnel cloud. there is that distinct little hook you see right there moving into baltimore county. a well-defined hook echo at 1:33 a.m. wednesday, that is when warnings were issued. damage does indicate that it was a tornado, officially touching down at one of 35 -- 1 :35. it was less than half a mile long. there was additional damage from straight line winds from the thunderstorm in the area. it was on the ground for a short time, but they estimate that wins were 100 miles an hour. that can do some damage. again, a confirmed tornado at

1:35 on wednesday morning. >> sheldon is live from the scene of possibly the worst scenario. >> cleanup is underway in this area, but there are still some bigger branches scattered all over the apartment complex. take a look at some of the extensive damage that was done to some of the buildings. some like this one have been condemned, meaning that people have not been able to go back inside and get their valuables. police officers are all over the neighborhood. they have a command post set up and they are making sure that these do not make their way inside these condemned apartments to take anyone's valuables. >> it is crazy, because there are police everywhere, on every block. it is just crazy. >> almost two days after a tornado ripped through this northeast baltimore neighborhood, city police are

stepping up their patrols and turning some folks away. >> the total is that we are here to protect our property and stuff. -- they told us that they are here to protect our property and stock. >> 54 units were condemned by the city because of their extensive damage, including this unit. she said she still has no clue how badly her place was hit. >> they don't know if the building shifted or not. >> the tornado left behind a path of destruction in dutch village. >> i am just dealing with it as it comes. >> some families did not have much time to react. how have you guys been doing with clothing and so forth? >> we still have the same

clothes on. >> the red cross has helped more than 50 families who were affected by wednesday morning's tournedos. shelter has been set up nearby and they say they will continue to stand by to help. >> the city has created a disaster relief fund for victims. donations can be made to the disaster released fund -- disaster relief fund of baltimore county. while the focus is now squarely on cleanup and getting like back to normal, insurance officials are reminding homeowners who may need repairs to be where of shady contractors and skimmers. >> barry simms was out today checking on some of the damage in baltimore county. he continues our team coverage tonight from baltimore. >> out of the chaos, creativity.

off the market or defend them as safe. >> of baltimore county man is dead tonight following a tense standoff with police that unfolded earlier today. began with the shooting this morning in randallstown. police a terrance wilson shot his wife several times before barricading himself inside the home. >> she was actually walking out of the house, suffering from those multiple gunshot wounds as officers pulled up. of course they rendered a 2 per and sought to the fact that she was transported -- they rendered aid to hurt. police locked down the neighborhood as negotiators intended to make contact. wilson was found inside the home around 1:00. his wife was listed in critical but stable condition. a second arrest in a shooting at a glen burnie pizza shop.

problems and keep the foot pose a range of motion from working as well. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> temperatures a little bit above normal, but settling back closer to where we are supposed to be this time of year. the normal is 55, and we will probably fall a little bit short of that tomorrow. there was a confirmed tornado in the hamilton area. there was a 250-yard long damage path, just under half a mile wide. the doppler radar at bwi marshall was picking up on that distinct hook echo, the rain being wrapped from the funnel cloud as it was about to cross over into baltimore county. there were tornado watches to our self in virginia. it did to our south.

it is starting to settle back into the 30's out in the far western part of that state at frostburg and mchenry. clear skies and dry conditions expected, 34-42 the temperature spread. sunrise at five minutes before 7 early on friday. a storm off the coast, bringing in some chilly weather across new england. the next storm organizing across southwest canada and the pacific northwest could bring some interesting weather in here as we come in -- as we head for the thanksgiving holiday next week. 48-53 for the high with west winds averaging 5-10 knots. snow showers as possible in the morning near deep creek and a high of only 43 tomorrow. sunshine and about 50 around the bay. there will be a good deal of sunshine at the lower eastern shore.

if you are heading south toward charlotte for the ravens and panthers over the weekend, the travel weather down that way. on sunday it 1:00 the temperature should be in the 60's with lots of sunshine in charlotte. the same thing around here, sunny skies for friday, mostly sunny saturday and sunday. close to 60 on saturday. next week it will climb into the 60's on monday and tuesday, and on thanksgiving day another chance for showers and maybe even to understand hours thursday afternoon. -- may be thundershowers thursday afternoon. >> tonight's jackpot is an estimated annuity of $3,100,000.
