national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> i have no where to stay right now. i am in shock. >> yet another fire in baltimore city, but this one has a tragic ending. several homes were destroyed and the dozens of people displaced. six others were killed. fire investigators are still working to determine what caused -- what caused the blaze that took the lives of six people. >> flames tore through homes this morning. among those killed were three children. >> a makeshift memorial outside of the burned out home has grown steadily since the fire that took six lives. >> -- >> neighbors knew the victim's home as a place to find a friendly smile and a helping hand. >> she was a schoolteacher. i used to go down there with all the children around her and everything. she was a beautiful person.

it is something you cannot believe. >> according to family members, the six victims include two grandparents, a mother, and her three children, ages 9, 3, and one. >> they were such beautiful children. to see six bodies die in a fire around the holidays, it is just overwhelming for me. >> friends and family, that is the strongest thing we have. god bless is that as though we have right now. all we can do is hold each other. >> this is a community that experienced this kind of tragedy before. several people died in a fire in the neighborhood three years ago a neighborhood church once again provide a place for families to go. >> more people came from the neighborhood and their extended family as the word got around

that they were here. we were glad to welcome them and help them to come and greet the family. >> the displaced families are receiving assistance from the red cross, a place to stay, and financial assistance to help replace with the loss. >> clothing, food, just whenever they need for the next couple of days. case workers will work with them for the next days and weeks to come. >> weather conditions made fighting the fire difficult. firefighters had to evacuate at one point until conditions improve. it is not clear if the higher -- if the house had been working smoke detectors. just last week, two five-alarm fires caused problems in parts of the city. one neighborhood was decimated. 12 hours later, there was another fire.

memory loss. your temperature could be dropping into the danger zone, less than 90 degrees. >> the body begins to shut down a little bit. the shiver response goes away and then, as your body tries to drive blood to the core and tries to preserve the heart and head, that is when you start getting into trouble. >> dr. kloe has advice for anyone who wants to spend time outside, especially tailgaters to turn to alcohol to stay warm. >> it gives you the sense that you are warm, but it is the reverse. it can accelerate the likelihood that you will have hypothermia. >> a brisk pace and holiday spirit are keeping this guy warm. >> it helps officials are hopeful the people he the warnings about hypothermia because the consequences can be very serious. last year, there were 40 to

friend's death. the defendant who was working at the time was initially committed until he turned 21. christophers family said that the judge made the right call. >> he is a child. inevitably, he will be released one day from jail. it is best for him to be rehabilitated to the fullest. >> christopher was attacked by a group of teenagers while riding his bicycle home from a community pool. he was punched in the left temple. his co-defendant him on the right side of the head because they thought he had said something negative about them. as christopher tried to peddle it, he collapsed. an autopsy confirmed that the attack cause of the death, not the fall. -- the attack caused the death, not the fall. >> he has matured a lot.

>> the teenagers' therapist said he is ready for less restrictive environment and could return to the care of his father in home detention only if intense counseling were provided and a full program of activities were provided. he got into a verbal confrontation with a peer and, despite repeated warnings, became a negative influence on others just last month. >> i do not think he has matured enough. and with the right circumstances, he could find himself in the same situation again. >> the teenager's therapist says that he needs to work on anger management, but she considers him a good role model. he said he wants to give back to the community. he has learned his lesson and has become a model citizen. even wrote a letter of apology to the jones family. it has not been sent because a civil lawsuit is pending against the defendant and the school board.

the judge asked the teenager's therapist to let them know how he reacted to the court ruling. he wants to be kept up-to-date on the teenager's progress. >> in tonight's medical alerts, there is good news. it turns out that yet -- that exercising, even as a young adult, hopes into middle-age. they followed more than three dozen men and women, ranging from 18 to 30. they found that those who are highly active were significantly less likely to gain weight when they hit their middle ages. overall, women saw the biggest benefit. you probably are the have been putting them in your mouth -- an amalgam fillings in your teeth. dentists have been using them for decades. but they have different metals, including mercury, which is poisonous.

but those late snows are winding down and these guys are winding down a little bit. it is still in the little bit -- and those skies are winding down a little bit. it is still windy a little bit. it will be a bundle up-very cold wednesday morning. it will be mostly clear, windy, with temperatures to start the day at 13 degrees to 20 degrees. any of these little clouds that build up in the afternoon could drop a flurry or two. but the emphasis tomorrow is windy and cold. this high pressure system will blow on through here and let the next week's storm raced across the rockies on thursday. that looks weekend sting to the south. there may be some light snow on thursday.

tomorrow, it will be windy and cold. thursday, that is the snow coming in from the lower eastern shore. there is a possibility for something like this that could produce an inch or 2 inches of snow in some spots. we have to see how fast it blows through. friday, the skies will clear up. but the moisture could return over the weekend. around the bay, it will be breezy. but there will be a good deal of sunshine. it will be in the mid-30's on the eastern shore. temperatures are staying below normal for another seven days, only around freezing on wednesday and thursday and a chance of light snow on thursday. and -- and more important storm come up from the south. we will have to watch it over the weekend. >> despite an article in "new york times," earl weaver is still very much alive.
