tv   Today  NBC  April 28, 2011 9:00am-10:00am EDT

9:00 am
we have reports of a vehicle stopped in sam's creek. to not try to stand -- do not try to pass through the water. try to avoid doing that. >> you can follow storms right down to your own street using our interactive radar. go to our website, wbaltv.com. when severe weather does strike, you can share your photos and videos with us on our u local site at wbaltv.com. we have another 15 minutes. how are things moving? >> i focused in on the hot spots. mostly up and carroll county and northern baltimore county. let me text in for the latest information that we have. near union mills is where this
9:01 am
is located. it just disappeared. east of union mills and moving to the northeast rapidly at about 50 or 60 miles an hour. now north of manchester. this storm cell -- this is why we have the tornado warning for carroll county and northern baltimore county until 9:15 this morning. this is the most intense cell. the intensity park has lost its identifier on the radar. -- the intensity has lost its identifier. this is the area right here that is the most intense. that isn't northeast carroll county -- that is then the northeast carroll county.
9:02 am
it is moving to the northeast up towards york county. york county has a tornado warning in effect. we have flood warnings in effect until 10:00 a.m. and that includes parts of howard county, carroll county, and frederick county at this time. we have this cell. look off to the southwest. a lot more stuff going on beyond frederick and into northern virginia. when doorstop? charlottesville -- when to stdoi stop? me add that.let's meet ad this is part of the general
9:03 am
storm system we have heard of that has been producing all of this trouble, especially down to the south, from arkansas, northern alabama, tuscaloosa, birmingham. they hid terribly last night -- they were hit terribly last night. this is the same root cause. a cold front is coming in from the west. until it does fit is coming through, we are under the gun. there is a watch for a turn as across the baltimore metropolitan area until 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. >> the tornado warning for harford county and baltimore county has now been lifted. it expired and not going until 9:15. the tornado warning has been lifted and harford county and baltimore county. that is progress.
9:04 am
>> we still of carroll county going. >> carroll county and frederick county. we have additional activity. a new triumph with thunder and lightning bolts activity west of mount airy and reaching between mount airy and frederick at this time. it reaches down into virginia. these lines keep redeveloping. in addition to the tornado warning, we have the flood warning in effect for much of the same area. that is until 10:00 a.m. this morning. these storms keep redeveloping over the same spot and keep laying down these heavy rains you get these 10, 15 minutes of torrential rains. then it dumps rain a second and third time. >> they are taking a pounding.
9:05 am
>> the water has to go someplace. hopefully not your basement. >> exactly. we see the ever developing cells to ourself. >> the cells are moving at that rate. we have not seen this line move very far east. we had a few showers in the city of baltimore. it was related to this. it was a separate peace. it was a share. this line has stalled to the west. the jet stream is moving rapidly southwest to northeast. the whole area has stalled and it will have to wait for this cold front in ohio to kick it out. that will be some time this afternoon. they have extended the tornado
9:06 am
watch until 3:00 p.m. that means things are slowing down. >> you cut and a meteorologist for a long time. have you seen as many serious turn as we have seen this spring? >> i am a bad one at remembering specific dates and times. these outbreaks coal from time to time based on the general weather pattern. we're in a groove the spring where we have had big outbreaks down in the south and in the plains states. last week it was in missouri and arkansas. this week it was in arkansas, alabama, mississippi. yes, i have seen these before. it is not all that unusual. it happens in clusters. it just depends on the general circulation pattern in the atmosphere, when these decide to set up.
9:07 am
we're skinning and the skies are trying to clear over the city. east of this line of storms, which is out around frederick and west of frederick, there is some sunshine trying to break through. this line of storms that has set itself up. all part of the larger weather pattern. >> baltimore county and carroll county, the tornado warning has been lifted. you were still in the tornado watch. >> as we have shown, this line of storms reaches all the way down into southern virginia. the stuff keeps shuffling northeastward along that line. eventually that line will be kicked further east. it may take a few more hours for that cold front to make a move out west.
9:08 am
as we go deeper into the day, the son starts to heat the atmosphere up -- the sun starts to heat the atmosphere up. then you get upward movement. then you build up these clouds and start the whole process. these storms are leftover and developing from storms that occurred last night. they happen to make it through the night and keep going. but now we will add more energy because the sun will start keeping -- heating during the day. we have a pre-existing condition this morning. that is why the tornado watch has been extended until 3:00 p.m. the mechanism is there. >> we had been on the air since
9:09 am
4:55 this morning. things have been changing. it may be hard for u.s. home to follow. the contract storms right down to your own street by checking out our interactive radar on our website, wbaltv.com. we would love to see your pictures and video. you can get a good shot. the wind is picking up. if you have some flooding in your neighborhood and a clear spot, did they break, the sunshine comes out, send us your photos and your video to our u local section on our website, wbaltv.com. >> these are areas west of baltimore. we have a large viewing area
9:10 am
that we serve. we're talking about something that is happening in only a portion of our viewing area. there could be enough to spread around as the day progresses that involves other areas. i hope folks out west have appreciated the information and that everybody else has some patients because everyone will get their turn. >> we do not like to obsess about the weather. it is a federal law that broadcasting alice, if you have a tornado, we have to inform you of the ever-changing situation. we are trying to keep you safe. send us a tweet on twitter. you can go to our facebook page and text us a message. it doesn't have to be video or pictures. give us an idea of what is going on and we will pass that along. >> we're sitting here.
9:11 am
the more information we have to share with everybody, your experience is just as important as someone else's experience. if you let us know, your neighbor may say, i just saw that. >> we're here in the building. >> there is another three and a half minutes left on this tornado warning, which is affecting carroll county and frederick counties. the storm cell is now kind of spread across both counties at this time. the strong activity reaches down into virginia. i hope it gives us a lunch break for a while and lets us reconnoiter. i am collecting tons of paper. the watch is in effect until 3:00 p.m.
9:12 am
>> linda from dundalk got to as quickly on facebook. she said that it is sunny, bright, windy, just beautiful. >> that is the freakishness from a potentially bad weather out to our west. the strongest cell is southwest of westminster, damascus. that activity has picked up southwest of westminster. a lot lightning 0 occurring. you can see from the skycam that the sun has broken through the clouds. there are some thinner clouds. we have a wide variety of weather conditions. the sun is breaking through. it may develop something later on. and start the process over. >> 24 hours ago we were
9:13 am
preparing for the funeral of william donald schaefer. can you imagine if this happened yesterday? a blessing. just a blessing. >> there was a lot moisture in the air. it set the stage for what we had started to go through this morning. a small area west of town. right now it has not been moving east. it will start marching eastward. >> we will let you wrap this up before the warning expires in about two minutes. there are some things you need to know when it comes to being in a tornado warning situation. head to the lowest level of your building. go to the safest place.
9:14 am
stay away from the windows. that can be dangerous. flying glass. cover your head. wait for the storm to move past. if you're caught outside, you need to crouch down in a low- lying areas. if you're in a mobile home or car, get out and move to a low lying areas like a deli -- gully. if that gully has water in it, it could get more flooded. that may not be the best place. get down as low as you possibly can. you do not want to outrun a tornado. a flash flood warning is in effect. that is another a dangerous situation. be aware of that. turned around and go the opposite direction. danny -- what do we have here?
9:15 am
a facebook. i did not do facebook. danny says it is crazy in westminster right now. dark, lightning, thunder. he 6 inches. >> he says it is dark and ugly. we have some new alarms going off. i can get to that in a second. it is now 9:15 and that warner for carroll county and frederick county has expired. >> you know what that warning meant? >> possibly we are staying on the air? >> the morning goes until 11:45 -- until 9:45.
9:16 am
all right. here is the new tornado warning. in effect until 9:35, another 30 minutes -- 29 minutes. for carroll county, frederick county, howard county, montgomery county, and baltimore county. >> this is a second cell coming through? >> let me clean up the radar. bear with me while i find the right things to click on. here is what is causing the latest one. just north of damascus. >> we do not see any rain, pulling of water, but that is going to change quickly here. >> go back to the radar.
9:17 am
we will take a look at this. there is a glitch in our system that is repeating all of this. forget all of that. the radar is located in a suspicious area, rotations in the clouds. 2.2 miles south of green valley. moving northeast at 50 miles per hour. 9:18, watersville could be impacted. 9:35, reese could be impacted. reisterstown could also be impacted. that is assuming the cell holds together and moves in the same direction. at the moment, this is all up in the clouds. no reports of anything on the ground but the latest tornado
9:18 am
warning is in effect now for another 27 minutes, until 9:45, for carroll county, howard counting, montgomery county, frederick county, and baltimore county. let me put this in motion. this is one hour's worth of motion. this one is moving a bit more west to east, not south west to northeast. this is moving in more of the eastern direction. something in the atmosphere is taking these things eastward. so we have quite a knot of activity near sec's bill. i-70 -- sykesville.
9:19 am
i-70 is right in the heart of it. there is also more lightning in this one from previous cells. the sun could be heating up the atmosphere a little bit. nonetheless, indications of some circulation out of this cell. so, from damascus number two westminster, we have a storm cell. focused at the bottom of that, in the northern part of howard county, we have the latest circulation. i will try to identify it and see what we can come up with. >> in the meantime, there are lots of people out there being
9:20 am
our eyes and ears. and jennifer franciotti, who is in carroll county, send us this picture. see those start clouds just beyond the tree rich? -- ridge? we heard earlier from linda, in the dundalk area. at the time that she contacted us, she said that it was bright and sunny, but windy. we have already heard also from stacy. she says founder is picking up and the sky is getting darker. amy says, my mom is in pennsylvania and a tornado just touched down there in the new
9:21 am
freedom area. you freedom. >> that was about a half hour ago. those were some of the stars moving out of maryland. >> amy lives in westminster. she lives near a golf course and said that the greens are flooded. some of the strangest whether she has seen. marcy says, i have been up since 4:30 this morning watching you guys. i wanted to be prepared to move my family to the basement. she also says it is getting dark and ominous again. that is in the glen elk area. lauren says that it is dark in
9:22 am
her neighborhood. they are getting warnings of all sorts there. >> we used to call those air raid warnings. but that is not as big of a threat as the storms now. i am showing on the radar, circulation from one of the systems. this is a friendship, near howard county. elders burke, 9:32. at 9:41, glendon, if this cell holds together and continues to move in the direction is moving now again, i have to say, all these reports that we're getting, except for that one about new freedom, all of these
9:23 am
are indications by radar that the circulation has developed in storm cells. with the exception of that new freedom one -- >> that was unconfirmed, we should mention. >> that is right. all of the rest of these are raider-indicated -- radar- indicated. let me see if i can refresh the permission to see if anything new has come in. near french ship moving northeast at 50 miles per hour. there are still a lot of if's with this. if it holds together, if it continues to move in that
9:24 am
particular direction, at that particular speech. tornadoes can come up and down, strike, moved 10 miles and then come back down again. amharic we have heard about all of these tornadic reports, down an alabama. you will hear maybe 50, 6020 reports, but you get multiple reports on the same storm. it is not that many tornadoes, it is how many reports you get. >> speaking of tuscaloosa, alabama, they have confirmed as of 5:00 this morning -- 82 deaths from the nighttime storms. >> nighttime storms are
9:25 am
particularly dangerous because people may not be paying attention. you cannot see the storm and the tornadoes are often enveloped in rain, so you do not see the final period you can really be caught unaware. -- the funnel. you can really be caught unaware. >> ryan in finksburg is giving us a hand. he is in carroll county. he says all he sees are a few clouds and sunshine. you could go a couple miles either direction from him and it would be completely different. gina says a storm just passed over, very heavy rain.
9:26 am
ryan keeps hearing about westminster, but they do not see anything. we had someone in westminster already said that he had 6 inches. so it is a pretty spotty situation. these are facebook entries coming into us. when tracy is indelicate city -- tracy is in alcott city -- ellicott city. jennifer parker in the forest hills area. she is looking out her door. it is sonny, the wind is at a aremum and the birds chirping.
9:27 am
it will probably not stay that way all day. 10 minutes ago, he says it was sunny, but now the dark clouds are back and thunder is rumbling. understand downpours. is a real popery of things. -- popery of things. >> i have focused on the lower portion of the cell. now in carroll county. again, we have a tornado warning in effect until 9:45 for carroll county, frederick county, baltimore county, montgomery
9:28 am
county. this thing is moving at a pretty good clip. let me find the right thing here. right on t pepco river, howard county moving into southern carroll county, this is the suspicious area of this storm. at last check, this hot spot, 1.2 miles west of watersville. reisterstown keeps on popping up in these things for projections about 20 minutes from now. if it is a tornado and not just circulation in the clouds, it keeps its track, and if it lasts that long. a lot of if's.
9:29 am
we have an indication of what might be a hook echo. let me see if i can identify a highway here. i can get a lot closer. >> do not scare me. >> i want to get closer to street level. i do not want to totally lose our way for this storm, but this is the really touchy spot. this storm now moving through southern carroll county. let me move around for a little bit. a lot of other areas just to the northeast. i will circle eldersburg so that
9:30 am
people have a reference point. there is the storm cell. it is not moving directly towards eldersburg, but gives you a reference to where the storm is headed. this is the most counties i have seen in one morning so far this morning. this one nacelle is moving more west to east and the others. potentially affecting more counties at this stage. the indications are, from radar, that we are seeing some circulation. whether we ultimately get confirmation, something on the ground, we have to wait and see. montgomery county is now out of that particular morning because
9:31 am
the storm cell has moved far enough north that they are no longer threatened. >> we are continuing to hear from our viewers on facebook -- i just want to pass on a few more of these. ashley is in westminster. she is near the wakefield valley. clouds, tons of rain and wind. tammy is in the white marsh area. she says it is strange. bright sun and then it is windy. it is strange how quickly it changes. ashley. tons of rain, where ever she is. crystal has a question. in a tornado warning, how safe would you be in an apartment
9:32 am
building? i would imagine it depends on the profile of the building. >> what it is built out of as well. the same rule applies. get to the lowest floor. if you are on the third floor, things are not looking so good, you should probably had for a lower price. try to get under some reinforced area. a lot of complexes to have shelter areas. >> laundry rooms would be a pretty safe place to go. we have tony on the phone right now. how are you this morning? what is going on? >> i am in central baltimore county. i just want to point something out. that cell you are pointing out, moving across southern carroll county, it is a bit to west of me to see it.
9:33 am
but what i can see is the inflow going into that line. if you are looking from baltimore county west, you can see the scud clouds feeding into that line, moving northwest. then if you look at the next layer of clouds, they are moving from the southwest to the northeast. the highest level, the series back on top of that, west to east. so we can see the rotation in the atmosphere. it is an interesting phenomenon to see. you can see the inflow, into that cell. this one will definitely be rotating. >> the eastern edge of the raider looks a little ragged. it is not very strong rains, but
9:34 am
that mean that the pattern is not in a smooth line. it is being disrupted by strong winds. i suspect what we are beginning to see is the effect of the sun. >> absolutely. the atmosphere is starting to cook now. the sun is out in baltimore county, so there is plenty of instability for it to run into. there is no reason for it to fall apart, especially with such a strong inflow. you talk about the edge of the storm eroding. that is the updraft. >> explain this to me. most people watching and listening are thinking, if the clouds disappear and the sun comes out, that is a good thing, but you are saying that it is not necessarily a good thing? >> that is right. it is the sunshine that helps to
9:35 am
create the instability in the atmosphere. if it were completely overcast and you do not get the energy coming from the sun, then the storm loses its energy and it falls apart. it sounds counter intuitive to say that if the sun is out, it is worse. if there is sunshine in advance of this line coming to carroll county, there is no reason for the storm to fall apart. >> what is unusual is these storms have been going on that long. it is unusual for these things to hold together. things tend to stabilize at night. the atmosphere tends to cool a little bit, but these storms have held it together. there is enough energy in the atmosphere to hold us together. now we are adding the heat from the sun. and then we have the mechanical energy of the cold front coming in from the west, to boot.
9:36 am
>> where is the actual front? >> it is still in ohio. it is that far west. >> we could still have another line develop. this will have the tendency to stabilize the atmosphere for a couple of hours. if we get sunshine, we could have another round of thunderstorms developing on that boundary as it reaches md. later this afternoon. >> which is likely by the tornado watch was extended until 3:00 this afternoon. if these storms go away -- and they have been with us since 4:00 this morning -- if they dissipate, it is like deflating a balloon. equalizing the atmosphere, what ever you want to call it. but then the whole process starts over. we have a strong sun this time
9:37 am
of year. >> the fact that these storms made it past sunrise, the most stable part of the day, and they are starting to get into the cooking of the atmosphere, the ones behind it could redevelop as well. i just wanted to let you know that you can definitely see the inflow coming out of carroll county. you can see the clouds moving in different directions at different heights, confirming windshear. if you are seeing tornadic signatures on their radar, i just wanted to give you some confirmation. weather is a tornado coming out of that or not, i do not know, but that cell is definitely
9:38 am
rotating. >> we appreciate you calling in and giving us this little dose of geek speak, but this is what is all about. there are some people up there that really thrive on these kinds of things. it all there is but we have been talking about. we appreciate your insight. and you are outside. you can see this stuff we are stuck inside. all i have is my radar. >> it is difficult when you are in the studio. you cannot look outside, have to be on there. i thought i would give you a call and let you know. i did not want to take any more of your time. thank you for your coverage. as a viewer, i appreciate it. >> thank you, tony. we want to thank our viewers as
9:39 am
well. your input to us is invaluable, in terms of keeping us abreast of what is happening in the area. i am going to have to start doing facebook. george is in stereet, mar yland. wants to thank us for keeping them updated. janice is in northern westminster. she says the sky and there is dark, some thunder. the rain is still pouring in that area. josh is in shaunville.
9:40 am
he says the clouds are pretty black. we appreciate getting a picture from you. zack is also in the westminster area. he says it is raining buckets. it could get ugly before it is all over. donna. apparently, she sent us a picture, but we have not done it. she says the rain in carroll county is blowing almost horizontal late. maybe we can get a picture of that. wes says the kids are not in class but they are sitting in a hallway at westminster high school and middle school. we were talking earlier about
9:41 am
schools. they are generally prepared, they run drills for this. >> sounds like they are doing a duck and cover. >> kathy and westminster area, -- in the westminster area, she says it has been crazy there this morning. the thunder had been rattling the windows on her house. the parking lot has at least two inches of rain. she is not sure if she is going to make it to work in the kingsville area. they are waiting for the go- ahead from the board of elections to give them the go ahead that they should take shelter. she lives in the ellicott city
9:42 am
area. we want to thank all of you that are updating us by facebook and keeping us abreast of what is happening. it is invaluable for everyone. >> we have a couple minutes left on the tornado warning. frederick counties and montgomery county have been dropped. the line of thunderstorms is moving out of carroll county into baltimore county. there is one hour's worth of movement on the radar. a lot of lightning and winds. alarms keep going off. now lancaster and york counties of pennsylvania have been added to the tornado warning. i think that was the same timeframe. we will have to wait and see. we could be getting more information on that as well. the tornado warning is about to
9:43 am
expire. a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for howard, montgomery county, loudon county in fairfax. -- loudon county and fairfax. that is a different system coming off of the potomac river, just north of washington. that is just a general rainfall thing. so we have this line finally starting to shift to the east, which will take the heavy flooding pressure off of those counties. things are starting to move to the east. i guess you were given more information on people riding in. we are south of the heaviest storms. montgomery county. that is in effect until 10:00 this morning. only a couple minutes left for the morning for carroll county and baltimore county, york
9:44 am
county, lancaster county. >> kudos to our floor director, sarah caldwell. every time these alarms go off, they have to run around and get to the alert information, they are running these facebook pages. we are in the building. you all are the ears and eyes. we continue to get responses from our viewers through facebook. barbara is in belair. she says it is sonny then dart, and then sunni, then dark. -- sunny then dark, sunny then dark. lisa is in westminster. she says there is thunder, rain, as well as hell. she has been up since 4:00
9:45 am
following the storms. -- as well as hail. tracy from ellicott city. dark skies. wind is starting to pick up. thunder still going on. kristen is in hempstead, and they didn't make it to school today. better to be safe than sorry. luanne - in westminster. it got very quiet again and the recycling truck whent by. -- went by. thank you to all of you watching us. thank you for being our eyes and ears on the ground. it is a wide area, impacted
9:46 am
by the tornado watches and warnings. let me run through this. we see some showers just moving into the city. all this activity is west of baltimore. there are more alarms going off. we have a tornado watch until 3:00. thunderstorms east of the bay. thunderstorms in montgomery and howard county. and the tornado warning, the last one in effect has expired. it is 13 minutes before 10:00. a severe thunderstorm warning.
9:47 am
>> only a severe thunderstorm warning. >> we will put that on the crawl. at the moment, the warnings have expired. the watch remains in effect until 3:00 this afternoon. thunderstorm warning east of the bay. a lot of rain, concentrated west of town. east central -- loudon, prince george. a flood warning in effect for carroll county. becausell be in effect fo it takes a while for the rain to work out.
9:48 am
we have taken it down a notch. >> i can't thank enough, our viewers with a bird's eye view. we appreciate this. this has informed everybody. you think this is no big deal. in a situation like this, i can't tell you how invaluable this has been. we have now moved past the tornado warning. we are out o fthe woods, -- of the woods. we will leave the air at this point. thank you for your contributions. we now return you to regular programming. i am stan

9:51 am
diana to a tee. when she was alive, diana, princess of wales, wanted to make a difference, and she gave william the same ambition. >> she genuinely wanted to help and prince william naturally inherited that compassion. >> reporter: as a tiejer he slept on the streets of london to understand the plight of the home lts and just like his mother, it's a hands-on affair. on a trip with homeless mission he said children face all sorts of challenge. >> you move forward as best you can and get reasons why we all have problems in our lives and to get through them. >> reporter: take jeff hubbard, 53 years old f. he got through them, homeless and honored as the official photographer for charity and crisis. today he teaches others to get their life back in focus.
9:52 am
prince william voluntarily offered to help him by joining him in front and behind camera. the prince and the paper. >> when you've done something like that overcome this like done a shoot with prince william, it boosts your confidence. i remember thinking, i've been there. it elevates it again. >> reporter: the result ended up on the cover of "hello" magazine and helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for charity. >> he's one of those people who's genuine. >> reporter: the man whose mother so wanted to be queen could one day, because of her, be the king of hearts. prince william and bride-to-be kate asked their wedding guests not to bring them any guests. instead, contribute to a charity

that they set up. ann, if you think about it, how many toastersa future king need? >> exactly. such a pleasure. thank you so much. nbc contributor was princess diana's body guard for years and he's handling security. it's pleasure to have you. >> it's a pleasure on a really great day here in london. >> yechlt and a big day in london. before i get to the security question, i'd like to ask you how much of diana do you see in her son william? >> eoh, i think that's great question. i think so much of william and diana. from the early days when i began working with watermelon and diana. diana was influential through his early school days up through his education. i see it not only physically but his mannerisms and his sense of hue more which is very
9:54 am
entertaining for a lot of people. >> i know that i've about been reading that he called -- he had a nickname for you which was uncle ken and that you were very close with his mother diana so you would know the answer to that question probably better than many people. what can you tell us what to expect for tomorrow given how many people are gaerthering her and the fact that so many important people will be arriving to watch this wedding? >> i mean it's going to be an enormous day. being here on the plot as we say, the excitement is so incredible. but it will be a tre men disday for william and kate and people have asked many times about security here. believe me, scotland yard has the record of pleegs such events and such expertise. i don't believe anyone should have any fears or worries about how surge saysful this will be. unless the weather holds out it should be an amazing day.
9:55 am
>> it should be and we're hoping for a great day, ken wharfe, thank you is much for your perspective. have a good time tomorrow. i know it's going to be good for you given your relationship with the boy once known as will. and k >> live, local, latebreaking. this is wbal tv in baltimore. >> we are breaking into the today show to cover the storms in our area. a tornado warning has been issued. >> this latest warning is in effect until 10:15. baltimore and hartford counties. the storm cell is north if the -- of the city.
9:56 am
we have these storm cells from earlier in the morning. we have the potential for a tornado because of rotation in the clouds. i have drawn the triangle to show the most intense activity. this is 6.1 miles south of bentley springs. it could be a tornado. moving to the northeast at 52 mph. it could effect norrisville. at 10:15, holtwood. this is a tornado warning in effect until 10:15 for baltimore and hartford counties. this storm cell covers the north
9:57 am
of the county. closer to the bay or aberdeen proving ground is not in this area. it is north baltimore and hartford county. more of a threat. move into could ov pennsylvania. radar shows circulation that could come down to the ground. these storys have this -- storms have this rapid movement. it is hard to keep up with what is going on. they said how threatening this
9:58 am
