things off by talking about the special role their moms played in their lives. >> and jean chatzky will be here with her mom to talk about the influence mothers have, especially when it comes to our financial future. and giada de laurentiis shares entertaining tips her mom taught her. first a look at the top stories. >> in the news, al qaeda confirmed that osama bin laden is dead. this as we learn more from the documents seized at the terror leader's hideout in pakistan. the cia says al qaeda considered a strike on america on the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. a plot was in the works to derail passenger trains but according to counter terrorism officials the attack never progressed beyond initial planning stages. other documents obtained in sunday's raid indicate al qaeda's desire to strike the u.s. on major american holidays and anniversaries. the april employment report is out and the economy added more jobs than analysts expected. employers added eed 244,000 ne

jobs. the unemployment rate rose to 9% mostly because job hunters resumed looking for work. many residents of the mississippi delta are being forced to evacuate as the waters rise. this week army engineers demolished levees at three points along the mississippi river hoping to protect several small towns. missouri farmers are devastated as the surging waters were diverted onto their land, causing damages they say could cost them millions of dollars. as the flooding threatens the mississippi delta, a major swath of texas is undergoing a d-4 level daughtrought, the most se on the scale. some 25 washington, d.c. schools received letters containing a white powder thursday prompting concern and evacuation of the schools. initial testing find it is powder to be nonto sicknontoxic.

by -- >> thank you, al. now to lessons i learned from my mother. ann, al and i sat down to talk about our moms and their special brand of motherly advice. ♪ >> my mother was from japan. she was a war bride after world war ii. one of the things that happens in the japanese culture is that women, mothers show their love by offering advice. she would say, anna, don't marry good-looking guy, i think so you should marry a man with a good heart because some day he's going to be ugly, old man. i took this to mean that in the end we rely on each other's character and who we are and that we can make a mistake by

just judging someone from the outside and especialliy the man we marry. i thought this was pretty good advice. i decided to marry a man who was really good-looking and had a good heart. she would say things like -- anna, you need to fix your hair. you look like a boy. no sexy nothing. nobody going to marry you. number one, fix the hair. this is the way my mom loved me. it was to show me that she cared. at the time i didn't always feel that way. but as i got older i realized the value. you know, i think she was right. on virtually everything now that i think about it. >> we touched down at the south pole. >> i guess i would say that, you know, so much of who i am and what i have made of my life i

owe her. yeah. ♪ >> she was very honest, very direct. she was very lovinging, very demanding. she had a very wacky sense of humor. everybody wanted to make sure they stayed on her good side because she was, you know, mom. even my dad would come home from driving the bus and poke his head in, how's your mother today? she's great. oh, okay. she really ran the house. always speak up for yourself. if you don't, nobody else will. she was very vocal. you know, some might say blunt. it was also, your family is your most important possession. i think that was -- you know, she was all about her family and everything she did was about her

family. so i think those are probably the greatest lessons she left all of us. no matter who her children were and what they did she was just as equally proud of them. and i think that is a gift that gives every day, not just mother's day. there are times where -- you know, it's hard to think that she's not here. debra and i will look at each other and she'll say, i miss her so much. and i know she'd love seeing her grandchildren growing up. you know, i look at those kids -- my three kids and this is my gift from her. ♪ >> my mom is brazilian. she's an immigrant mom. she came to this country when

she married my father. he was in the air force, fell in love and brought her over. we moved every three years. she was constantly having to asimilara sasimilar late to new -- assimilate to new cultures. the one constant we had was mom being there when i came home from school, not knowing anyone, not having any friends yet wherever i moved to. she was the one who always made us feel that we were loved, we were taken care of and very safe and secure. we would have dinner every night together as a family. that was really an important thing that i also do with my kids. >> all right. >> the biggest lesson i learned from my mother is to really value motherhood and to fight for it and to fight for your kids and to value the relationship you have with your kids. they're going to be very hard times and there are going to be some amazing times.

we learn so much from our parents. how does mom influence how we spend later in life? >> mostly, i think, by watching. we watch what our mothers do and it influences us. in fact, there was a survey yesterday that said moms are more influential than dads where money is concerned. >> i wonder why. >> i had good lessons from my mom. i passed them on. >> that's how we stay on track. i have some of the tips you have offered to jean and the first is to save. that's simple enough. >> we had a family piggy bank when i was a kid. >> we did. >> my dad was a college professor. we didn't have a ton of money, but i remember when we went to disney for the first time sitting in the living room, e y emptying that out and deciding we had enough for admission to the park. >> do you have one? >> we still have it. it's really a bowl. but we call it a pig.

what jean's brothers don't know is she's made claim to it already. >> i get to inherit the pig. i think it's appropriate, don't you think? >> elaine says yes and i say yes. i'm not going against mom. take it up with your brothers. the next lesson is to work. that's a necessary lesson for children to have. >> it is. the children all worked during high school. they had some very interesting jobs. we gave allowances. but we felt that money is more valuable to you if you earn it yourself. >> absolutely. >> what are some of the interesting jobs you had? >> i detasseled corn. we lived in indiana and that was a big thing. >> what is that? >> you pull the tassel off the corn before they ship it out. >> you were paid for that? >> oh, yes. we worked in summer parks and things like that. it was just having -- if you wanted something extra, you had

to work for it. >> that's true. i had my first job at 14. i worked at toys r us. it was a great lesson in learning to have your own money and buy what you want in life. >> if my kids earn the money it's more valuable to them. >> you want to see a kid hold onto money, make them earn it. you have another lesson. you say come up with creative solutions. you have a fond memory of driving across country. >> right. >> it was an expensive trip. >> yes, it was. you know, we managed. we didn't go to restaurants all the time. >> we used to picnic out of the car with a loaf of bread. we would be saving money but we don't know. >> i understand you had a creative way to pay for college tuition. >> we did. my husband and i were very set on the children not coming out of college with debt. one of our homes, we had a side

lot extra to the house. we sold it to our neighbor and we could have the extra cash when we had two children in college at the same time. >> wow. >> it gave us the cash and less lawn to mow. >> you talk about regarding spouses and finances. >> this is one of my biggest memories from childhood. my parents took turn paying the bills. you would pay them for six months, you would get cranky and dad would pay for six months. they switched back and forth. >> it obviously worked. >> it really worked. it gave us both a picture of our finances. so one wasn't spending while the other was, you know, wringing her hands or his hands. and when it came to big things we always discussed them. then i did all the paperwork. >> right. >> she really had a handle on the investments. i learned through you that if
