hello and good morning. after days of denial, anthony weiner admitted that he sent a lewd photo to one of his twitter followers. house minority leader nancy pelosi has called for an investigation which the new york congressman says he will cooperate with fully. >> reporter: after more than a week of denials, representative weiner was apologetic and tearful. >> i am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife and my family and supporters and staff. >> reporter: admitting it was him that sent a lewd photo over the intrchbt. once i realized i had posted to twitter, i panicked, i took it down and said that i had been

hacked. >> reporter: but he also admitted much more, saying it was not the first time. >> weiner says some of those photos were to a top hillary clinton aide last year. these photos were allegedly sent to another woman. weiner was completely candid. >> this was a destructive thing to do that i deeply regret. >> admitting huge mistakes with, but saying he has no plans to step down. kristin dahlgren, nbc news, washington. dry desert winds are fanning the flames of a wildfire in arizona and is now headed to the new mexico border. a layer of thick smoke from the fire can be seen as far away as iowa as the blaze works its way across the state. now some 365 square miles in

size, the flames have destroyed five buildinges and torched nearly 230,000 acres of forest. and it is a much different story in the midwest where residents and crews are scrambling to save a southwest iowa town from the swollen missouri river. a levee has been breached in two places near the town of hamburg and officials are expecting new breaches in the coming days. officials say crews are working around the clock to construct a sectionary barrier. but if that doesn't work, portions of the community could be eight feet of water for weeks. overseas, german health officials still don't know what's caused a deadly outbreak that so far has killed 23 people and sickened more than 2,300 officials. this morning, german officials are backtracking from blame thing an organic farm saying

tests showed no connection between the sprout grown there and the strain. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. a survival story played out last week in massachusetts's deadly tornado. the video shows a driver parking between two cars just before the storm pulled through the area. the ef-3 tore through leaving debris and construction in its wake. a san diego courthouse bombing information has been released. prosecutors proved the former city employee planned to play the hero to collect reward money and receive leniency on other cases. a florida woman's work day came to a horrific end when she was attacked during a robbery.

the mother of four was savagely beating by the suspects while the other grabbed cash from inside the safe. police believe the robbery was an inside job, but have not made any arrests. finally, to georgia where a store owner shot at point-blank range during a robbery attempt is very lucky to be alive. he survived the attempt on his live thanks to a medallion he was wearing that was covering his chest. his last line of defense deflected the bullet leaving the man with just bruises, but with his life intact. now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has your weather channel forecast. >> isn't that how every main character in a movie survives? >> exactly. if you see me tomorrow with a huge necklace of bling, you'll know why. >> lynn, it was 105 yesterday in chicago. all that heat is going to spread

east today into tomorrow. we'll get a break today in the dakotas into areas of colorado. it's really not until tomorrow that the heat comes down in the midwest. and it was 101 in san antonio. this is just a broken record ever since the end of last week. we're starting to get a little taste of that spreading east now, the appalachians. atlanta was 93. d.c. was up to about 88. now, the weather pattern hasn't changed much. because of these storms finally on the move, we're going to try to knock down this heat rig. if we're not going to knock it down so much, we're going to slide it to the east, anyways. that's going to push this storm off the new england coastline further away. we've got flooding problems. remember this winter and early spring we had a ton of snow in the northern rockies. up here in montana, finally temperatures have warmed up. now you're getting the heavy rain storms. they're concerned about flooding through northern idaho up through montana. those were all heading northward at this hour. today's forecast, we don't have

a lot of rain out there. i'm going to show you the temperature forecast. 100 from west texas to kansas. we're easily in the 90s past chicago and minneapolis. we're start to go warm it up near 90 today in new york, philly and d.c. that's a look at your national forecast. now here is a look at the weather outside your window. 96 in nashville, tennessee. and dallas, texas, we have a shot at 100 today. denver, colorado, same as yesterday, around 90. indianapolis, steamy at 92. we will see the record braking heat spreadling to the east coast wednesday and thursday. and thursday looks like it will probably be one of the hottest days we've seen in a long time in the mid-atlantic. d.c. has a chance of hitting 100. >> and that can be dangerous. people need to watch out. stocks stumble, am unveils sxb what would you pay for launch with the oracle. your early morning business headlines are straight ahead. plus, yet another honor and yet another cause for lady gaga. the boston bruins make a statement. an nfl start gets a new lease on life and more bad news for one

good morning, and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. one president obama's top economic advisers, austin gulsey chairman of the white house council of economic advisers said yesterday he will leave his post this summer to return to teaching. this comes as president obama facing growing criticism over the nation's growing economy. a new washington post/abc poll shows nearly 6 in 10 say the economy has not even begun to get back on track and the majority who say it has improved call it weak at best. the president's approval rating now stands at 47%. the u.s. is scrambling to arrange a power transform in yemen while president saleh is in saudi arabia for medical

treatment. officials say he plans to return home within days. dramatic footage from a chinese television shows the damage from the devastating flood waters in the country's southwest region. china's official news service says 14 people are dead, 35 are missing. and finally, a discovery by a self-styled armed chair astronomer has the internet buzzing about the possibility of life on mars. using google earth mars explorer, he zoomed in to discover what appears to be a white cylindrical object which he claims is about 700 feet long and 150 feet wide. >> and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,089 after dipping 61 points yesterday. the s&p lost 13 points. the nasdaq fell 30. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei added 62 points. but in hong kong, the hang seng

was down 80. stocks slid for a fourth straight day monday with the s&p 500 hitting its lowest point since march. friday's disappointing may jobs report has apparently convinced many traders the recovery is indeed in trouble. monday's losses came across the board. all ten industry groups fell on the s&p. financials were hit hard. citigroup lost 4% as did bank of america, closing at its closest point since may 2009. lowes dropped more than 2% after one firm cut its stock rating, blaming home prices and jobs. oil fell under $100 a barrel to a penny over 99 on recovery fears and speculation opec may raise supplies. energy shares yield fueled by chevron.

in sports, boston is down two games to none in the stanley cup final. a hit by an opposing player from vancouver may have given the bruins the jump start they were looking for. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. it took three games, but the boston bruins finally found their offense in the stanley cup finals. game three started with a bang. the canucks aaron roam leveled horton with a hit across the middle. taken off on a stretcher, diagnosed with a concussion. the good news, he was responsive and moving all of his extremities. rome give a game misconduct. the bruins responded in the second period. a neckel ball that the red sox tim wakefield would have been proud of. 3-0 when he got behind the defense and made the move on roberto alongo.
