>> from the core of the u.s. senate to the national women's hall of fame, maryland's senior senator makes history tonight. it is induction weekend before maryland's barbara mikulski. and kate amara, in for deborah uighur, who is traveling on assignment with the senator, and was there and she received that honor tonight. it is or big story. leading inductees include an equal rights champion, a pioneering chemist, and the first woman to enter the boston marathon. here is part of senator mikulski's induction speech. >> for many of us up on the stage and certainly for myself, it came out of the fact that what we knew was when people told us know. you cannot do this. why are you doing this? you are just going to cause trouble. why don't you stay home. why don't you shut up? why don't you sit down?

annual dinner of the human rights campaign, addressing the gay rights group less than two weeks after the military ended its ban on openly gay service members. in a sharp rebuke of his republican rivals, the president said anyone who wants to be commander-in-chief must support the entire u.s. military, including gay service members. >> i am still hopeful, because of the deeper shift we are seeing, a transformation not only written into our laws but often in -- woven into the fabric of our society. >> as expected, the president did stop short of endorsing a marriage. on the gop side of the equation, more than 1200 but reject republican women gathered in kansas city this weekend. the entire slate of gop presidential conventions were in -- contenders were invited to speak at the convention. the organization held a straw

poll today and they will announce the results tomorrow. presidential hopeful rick perry was stumping in new hampshire today. at a town hall meeting, the republican defended his position on illegal immigration, but did say more needs to be done. >> the federal government has to step in and deal with this border and secure its. >> the texas governor has come under fire for allowing children of illegal immigrants to qualify for in state college tuition. perry insists he is doing what is best for his state. if you have a cell phone and you drive a car, you need to listen to this next three. a new law in maryland means a new penalty for drivers to decide to text behind the wheel. shelton dutes is live in west baltimore with more. >> a lot of us are guilty of it. we pull up to an intersection like this one and start going through our text messages.

>> the driver in this story was not texting, but actually using her cellphone. the new law does not apply to text messages to 911 or people using their gps devices. >> several other new laws also took effect today in maryland. if you want to see a complete list, visit our website, wbaltv.com. one person is dead tonight after an accident on interstate 83 that happened at about 11:45 this morning. we are told to vehicles were involved. there is no word if anyone else was injured during the crash. the accident remains under investigation. now to annapolis, where police say two men were shot overnight. police say juan brown and james wilson were both found dead with a gunshot wounds -- were

both found with gunshot wounds. no arrests have been made in the case. the red cross is helping several families who are displaced by a two-alarm apartment fire in west columbia. firefighters were called to the reflection apartment complex around 12:30 this afternoon. it took crews about 30 minutes to get that are under control. one person was treated for smoke inhalation. water restrictions have been lifted after a water pumping station in towson lost power. officials say the helen road station lost power affecting 150,000 people. bge crews worked to get the power back on and it was restored around 2:00 this afternoon. as the death toll from the national listeria outbreak continues to grow, we are hearing from the family of a maryland victim, a 87-year-old

clarence wells of catonsville and died after eating tainted cantaloupes. health officials told his family he had the same strain of listeria as the national outbreak that has killed 15 people so far. the family is suing the colorado based form and its distributor. >> the numbers have me in complete awe that there are 1.5 million cantaloupes, and my father is one who ate the cantaloupe and passed away. it is just mindboggling. >> family members say mr. wells brought -- bought cantaloupes from a produce department. it is the only recorded listeria case in maryland. a traveler from the state to permit. the obama administration says the killing of a u.s.-born cleric in yemen could mean retaliation against american citizens worldwide. he was killed friday during a

ground attack on this convoy. a similar alert was in place after the death of osama bin laden. there is reason to believe a top al qaeda bomb maker was killed in that drone strikes in yemen. the 26-year-old is believed to be responsible for making bombs used in several attempted attacks against the u.s., including the failed christmas day underwear bombing back in december 2009. his death has not been confirmed. amanda knox awaits her fate, the verdict just days away. >> as far as the genetic evidence, i feel that she has a very good chance. >> prosecutors attacked her character, and we hear from amanda's parents tonight. plus, snow in maryland? it started just over the border here. >> the doppler showing rein in

we are just days away in a decision in the amanda knox appealed. in the final week of the nine month appeal case, italian prosecutors argue the evidence against her is rock-solid, but the defense has chipped away at it, aided by a court-appointed forensic experts to call the dna evidence unreliable. >> the all-out assault on amanda's character and who she is was so over the top, it was incredible. it was really tough to listen

x a day in the life of a firefighter up close in baltimore city. it was the annual fire drills show in the city. officials said the goal was to educate kids about fire safety and prevention. it is the first of october, in case you did not make note of that. did you know it snowed in maryland today? snow in western maryland and parts of western virginia. this video was taken at the timberline ski resort. higher elevations in maryland could see an inch of accumulated snow by morning, according to lowell melser, who joins us now. >> no in october.

degrees. our current weather is showing this pesky low that is just sitting and churning in a counterclockwise flow, possibly into monday, bringing the majority of the rain in the overnight hours in the early morning hours. it could be a little pesky for the ravens game as well. the good news is all this high pressure will eventually move through here, possibly by tuesday, and then the weather gets downright gorgeous.
