wbal tv 11 news 11 news tonight. >> we are thankful that this nightmare is over. she suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit. >> tonight family and friends of amanda knox are reacting after an italian appeals court overturned the murder conviction against her. that is our big story tonight. good evening, everyone. i am rod daniels. amanda knox is now a free woman. she was released from a -- an italian prison after her conviction was overturned. she is expected to arrive back in the states tomorrow. here is the report. >> for the first time in four years, amanda knox is a free woman. she was driven away from the prison she has called home. she was not convicted of the brutal death of a roommate. after the verdict was announced, she was in tears. >> she is looking for two or future back home. she is looking to go back as soon as possible -- she is

is just hours away. amanda knox got entangled in the murder investigation while doing something that thousands of american college students do every year, study abroad. kerry cavanaugh spoke with the dean of loyola university of the office of international programs on how students can study abroad successfully. >> more than half of the leeland in a class studies abroad every year in europe, asia, and abroad. italy is always the program's biggest draw. the world is watching as amanda knox prepares to leave italy. it is a far cry from the way she entered the country four years ago as an unknown college student. she is one of thousands of american students studying abroad in italy, embarking upon an experience to reach academic and cultural benefits. studying abroad is a rite of passage for many american students. according to the dean of international programs at loyola university, maryland. >> from the day they get out of

bed to the moment they go back to bed, everything they do is a learning experience. >> they conduct orientations' state side and on location for parents and students for an immersion into a foreign culture. >> [unintelligible] a sometimes they think that because i am a foreigner the local law does not apply to me. >> if they find themselves in trouble, the american universities can offer some guidance, but -- >> they may need support with a translator or a lawyer. but with the law, there is nothing we can do about it. >> amanda knox and their case may represent an extreme case, but this professor believes that most studies abroad are more

marketable because of their experience. >> they are put in situations that can be challenging. they are young and must take some risks to deal with the situation they are encountering that they have never encountered before. >> they want all students to register with the state department. if you run into trouble, it is much easier to get support if they know you are already in the country. he also says [unintelligible] if you need help, it is easier to get a phone once you get there. >> baltimore police are looking for the man who sexually assaulted a johns hopkins university student. the attack happened around 1:00 saturday morning according to police. it is two blocks from the north baltimore campus. the attacker indicated that he had a gun but never showed a weapon.

october is domestic violence awareness month. we are hoping that a new grant will help in the dangerous and sometimes deadly cycle. local officials announced a $750,000 grant to expand the city's violent abuse initiative. they want to identify homes that are high risk for domestic violence behavior. there are 800 homes to check on domestic violence victims. dozens of people gathered in bel air tonight to celebrate survivors of domestic violence and to mourn the victims. a candlelight vigil included speeches, singing, and prayer. and 11 news reporter was there and joins us live in the studio. >> organizers of the vigil said their ultimate goal is to get as many people as possible to understand the domestic violence, holds no boundaries and speaking up to saving someone's life. >> age 30. >> the names of 31 people called off one by one.

>> tina blanford, age 50. >> they are all maryland victims of domestic violence, and who were killed by the perpetrators over the last year. >> we want to remember the memory of them. and it also helps to bring awareness to the issue that the domestic violence is very real. it is happening in our communities, and it knows no boundaries. >> family members, counselors, and others gathered at the bel air armory to light a candle and take care for people that did not get help in time. >> i am a survivor. >> she did not give details about her three years in an abusive relationship, but she says getting help helped her life. she says a non-profit organization that helps out -- that reaches out to victims that have no also to turn. >> it is a hard thing. one of the hardest things to go through. you care about somebody, and you think they care about you as well. but if somebody loves you, they do not treat you like that.

♪ >> it is estimated that one in four people will be in an abusive relationship in their lifetime. the victims ranged from the young to the elderly. each t-shirt included a powerful message written by victims or their friends and family. >> sometimes we have small children that will write on the t-shirt. one of them said it is not nice to hurt other people. and showed some tears, and that is a very simple message. >> going through what i went through, knowing there is somebody out there can help you be strong, do not be afraid to speak up. try to get help. >> safety awareness resources and change, the program includes a 24 hour hotline, counseling, and a 28-bed safe house. it holds the candlelight vigil every year. wbal tv 11 news 11 news. >> the tonight, a burglary

suspect accused of escaping police custody is back behind bars. this afternoon, police say a man broke free of his leg shackles, a kick out the window of a transport vehicle, and took off in his yellow jumpsuit. it happened at an intersection of york and west road. he was on his way back to the detention center after a bail hearing. a shooting in woodlawn late this afternoon forced security administration officials into a lock down. we are told the victim was a social security administration employees and was shot during a robbery attempt. >> the shooting occurred in a wooded area with footpaths near the security complex. the victim was taking his lunch break and was taking a walk to that area. >> the building was under lockdown for two hours. extra security was present when workers left the parking lot for work. no word on the victim's condition.

11 news has learned that the man shot by a baltimore police last night has died from his injuries. we are told officers were told -- were called to the 3600 block of the district where they confronted a man with a gun. police say officers fired one shot hitting the man in the chest. his identity has not been released. tonight's commitment 2012 report, south carolina republicans have moved up its primary date. it allows the state to keep its first south distinction after florida moved its primary contest to january 31. >> south carolina will hold its presidential preference primary on saturday, january 21. last friday, a committee said there was chaos to the camp -- calendar. today, we restore order. >> michele bachmann is out of a

were called to the scene for a fight that night. >> 10 cops came, but i was in the bathroom cleaning up. they told my friend that when i come out, they would talk to me after they were done doing everything else. >> she says they were all gone when she came out of the bar. the next day, she went to bayview medical center where she was told she has a fractured cheek. she asked for a police officer to file a report. >> we ask for a cop to come over then. as i wanted to press charges against a guy who hit me. the cop told me because i do not have his address and his birth date, there is nothing we can do about this. >> maria alvarez took her to the hospital. she says she was shocked by the officers' response. >> he pretty much a said that there was nothing they could do. there were just like, we cannot go get this person. we cannot figure out who it was.

towards the glory time in garrett county. some fog to deal with that in morning. then partly cloudy in the afternoon. sunny skies on wednesday. ocean city will enjoy the same basket -- basic pattern. lots of sunshine expected right there through the middle of the week at ocean city. the tropical storm is still out there and a bit of a worry for bermuda. 65 mile per hour winds and about 750 miles away. it will drift and then strengthen into a hurricane and strengthen the defense could off to the north east. it will do a curl and almost a u-turn as it heads back into the atlantic. it will be nerve wracking for bermuda as they watched the storm strengthened over the next few days and then finally move away from them. the seven-day forecast, for our region is getting better. spring is about to come to an end. but for fog in the morning. it's such a sunny beautiful weather wednesday, thursday, friday, and into the weekend.
