we are back now more of "today" on a friday morning, the 7th day of october, 2011, and it's just a great day for hanging out in rockefeller plaza, a big crowd of people from all over the country. i'm matt lauer along with ann curry and al roker. we have an awful lot to get to before this show wraps up including the question, where is baby lisa, the 10-month-old who allegedly disappeared from her crib out in kansas city several days ago, has not been seen since. police have issued a statement

filling in for natalie with the headlines. all eyes on the economy as the september unemployment report is released. the labor department says the u.s. economy added 103,000 jobs in september. however, that was not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which remains at 9.1%. and nearly half of those gains came from striking verizon workers returning to their jobs. the parents of a missing baby girl in missouri denied today that they have stopped cooperating with police. on thursday, kansas city investigators said jeremy irwin and deborah bradley refused to answer any more questions. nbc's peter alexander has more from kansas city this morning. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. day four of this investigation to try to find this 10-month-old baby lisa irwin and a lot changed overnight. for one, police as you noted said that the parents of lisa are no longer cooperating with them but we spoke to the parents and they said they are, in fact, cooperating, and willing to

again meet with police at some point. that hasn't happened yet. what they have taken issue with is the way the interrogations have gone so far. lisa's mother said police told here she failed a polygraph test. the parents said police have tried to pit mother against father and even accuse lisa's mother of having to do with the disappearance. here the crime scene tape is down at the family's home and police have shut down their mobile command center. they say the search process will continue but only as they follow leads, at this time, there's still no suspects. savannah? >> peter alexander on the story for us, thank you. earlier on "today," matt asked the child's parents if they had any doubts about each other's involvement in the baby's disappearance. >> none whatsoever. on whatsoever. we've been asked that mlsz of times and there's no doubt in my mind that she had anything, there's no way she couldn't have

a new center of town. this is a family friendly house in every way, a nice family kitchen, stools beautiful, recently redone. the master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and double paned windows. you don't see that many nice bedroom when shopping the houses. the master bath has double sinks, a soaking tub and separate shower. the formal living room has wood floors, tile contrasting on top of the fireplace and window that looks out into your backyard. most of the living rooms look into the front yard, but this house is private. >> pennsylvania, $239,000, a lot of industry building in pittsburgh? >> a lot of industry. people think of it as the steel capital, it is not. tons of job in health care, technology and finance.

i didn't meet anybody yesterday in the steel industry. it's a thing of the past but this is a 100-year-old yellow victorian, front porch, three stories tall. all of the bedrooms have double windows and original wood floors. the kitchen tastefully redone with gleaming wood floors. i think the slate blue cabinets are tractive and the open bookshelf breaks up the wall. the pedestal sink, nice and clean, and the top floor with its glossy wood floors and pretty windows reinvented and made it into a child's playroom. i'd move right into that place. >> sweet. >> a nice house for only $239,000 at 4% interest rates. >> fabulous. dayton, ohio, home of the town of the wright brothers, got a beautiful four-bedroom home built in 1928. >> a norman rockwell type neighborhood. people are friendly, sit on their front porches.

thats with we age and the discs between our vertebrae tend to lose fluid and your vertebrae comes together. your arches of your feet tend to flatten and we lose muscle mass particularly in our abdomen, which leads to poorer posture. >> you say it's natural but how much is natural to lose? >> on average about a quarter to third of an inch per decade every decade about 40. for when 1.75 inches, for women two inches by the time they reach 70. >> sounds there are some things that exacerbate the losing of your height. what are they? >> sure, if you are losing more than that rate we just described it could be a sign of osteoporosis and this is the major fear here because this refers to very weak or brittle bones that make you more prone to fractures. if you're losing height more rapidly you should talk to your

doctor about getting scanned. because if you get it, you can be treated for it so you don't develop a fracture which can be devastating. >> there are social habits that might contribute. what are some of those? >> smoking is probably the number one thing that's not good for your bones, excessive alcohol use, excessive caffeine, not exercises, these are all things which make you more prone to losing height and more prone for osteoporosis. >> how much of this are we talking about, how much caffeine to have an impact do we have any idea about that? >> for alcohol if you're drinking more than two drinks a day. smoking any amount of smoking is not good for your bones and caffeine it has to be excessive, so you know, five, six cups a day and also certain medications can make your bones weaker so taking steroids, certain anti-seizure medicines. be careful, talk to your doctor if you're on one of the medicines to be checked earlier. >> the losing of height happens to men and women. >> right. >> happens differently as you mentioned? >> exactly. for men it's less prominent, so

for men because they tend to have more muscle mass and bones tend to be more general, it could be a sign of east yo pro sis and one study linked it to heart disease. men who notice they are getting shorter should be screened for heart disease as well as osteoporosis. >> there are some things you can do to stave them up, not so much da even if and alcohol, lay off the cigarettes. are there any good healthy habits you could introduce that might help so that we don't lose as much height? >> exercise is the number one and you really want to be exercising throughout your life but it's never too late to exercise and we're talking here about weight bearing exercises, jogging, running, because that will really help strengthen your bones and continue to keep them healthy as you age. the other thing is making sure your diet is very rich in vitamin "d" and calcium. calcium is not just in a lot of

dairy products, it's in almonds, broccoli, kale. you want to get that into your diet and if you can't, you talk to your doctor about supplementation. >> this is something worth talking about. a lot of times people wonder if they're getting the same nutritional impact if they take a supplement versus naturally. >> you often absorb more if you get it through food but can take a supplement if you're not getting it through food. the other thing is maintaining a good posture can help keep your bones strong and healthy. make sure the belly is in, the chin is up and head is held high, that will keep your bones healthy and not put as much stress on your vertebrae. >> you mentioned the weight bearing exercises. you said your core strength is important but your legs, your arms, everything? >> yeah but mostly the legs and the hips in this scenario, so jogging, walking, anything that's putting stress, usually we don't want to stress our knees too much. you need to put a little stress on it to keep your bones strong. >> anybody ever get taller with age? i hope not myself but okay. all right, thank you so much.
