nbc's tracy potts explains those numbers aren't leaving many impressed. >> if you can hear me in the back -- >> it has spread from new york to pennsylvania, florida, texas, the west coast, and washington. >> where are the jobs? where are the jobs? >> the corporate greed machines who are supposed to be creating jobs for us because of their tax cuts are holding onto money that they're collecting for the tax cuts and no jobs are trickling down. >> the labor department reports today unemployment remains flat at 9.1% with 103,000 jobs created in september. plus 57,000 more the month before. both fall short of what's needed to keep this recovery going. on capitol hill, law makers are grappling with how to pay for the president's $447 billion jobs bill and seeing some of that same raw remotion. >> you were going to win on this bill. you didn't need to jam it. >> republicans are trying to force a vote on the plan to

prove all democrats aren't behind it. democrats want to wait until their revised version comes out next week which may include a 5% tax on millionaires. president obama says he's ok with that. >> i'm fine with what they're taking. >> prosing a tax hike 13 months before an election won't create one single job. not one. >> republicans are accusing the president of spending more time campaigning than governing. in washington, tracy potts, nbc news. >> the occupy wall street protests are growing outside. protestors are speaking up in new york city about what they're calling corporate greed. it's been nearly three weeks since the first picketterer showed up. the nation's capitol has protestors hanging around and similar mob scenes are showing up in nashville, austin and several cities across the east coast. plus you can add baltimore to the list holding occupied protests. dozens braved the chilly night at the inner harbor hoping to

gain public support. and the attention of law makers. >> i want dialogue with the politicians. i would like to see them come engage us, and address the demands of the people. you know? talk about the fact that people are so unhappy that we're out here sleeping in the cold in the harbor just to get attention. >> the downtown demonstrators say they don't have one central message, but are gathering to address several local issues. another inner harbor assembly is scheduled for tonight in mckelvin square. >> again today we're soaking up the sun and enjoying the relatively mild temperatures out there. and it's terrific compared to what we had last weekend with all that rain and everything. so this is a nice recovery. the b.w.u. marshal, the noon hour, 70 is the temperature, the humidity is down. a northeast wind and downtown it's 69 kegs right now. air temperature being held back

just a little bit, but not much. just by the water temperature at the inner harbor. but the sun is shining, a very pleasant day so far. how long can we keep this going? the forecast for the weekend and next week coming up. >> police are searching for people who robbed a store this morning. the two suspects were armed when they enterered the store wearing masks. witnesses say they attempted to lock the doors but customers attempted to confront the robbers. they then stole money from the register. also a man is dead after an early morning crash. police say the 20-year-old driver of a chevy impaula crossed the double yellow line in the area of route 258 and nutly road. that's where the car apatiently hit a ford truck head on. the man driving the truck was taken to prince george's trauma center with serious injuries. no word on his condition or the

identity of either victim. baltimore city police are investigating a west baltimore shooting that left one man injured. officials say the victim was shot in the shoulder around 1:00 this morning, in the 3200 block of brighton street. no word on a suspect or a motive in that case. the search continues this afternoon for the person who shot a man during a robbery in charles village thursday, police say the victim was leaving a friend's house in the 2600 block of st. paul street early that morning. that's when the gunman allegedly approached the 22-year-old and announced a robbery. the victim said he followed the robbers commands but he still fired his gun. the rising violence in the area has people on edge. >> it's very, very frustrating for us. we rant about this senseless gun violence week after week and it's cases like this that really get us very, very concerned and frustrated. >> we're told the victim is expected to survive. if you have any information, you're asking to call metro crime stoppers at 1-866-7-lockup.

you can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. baltimore county police are also searching for crime suspects after two armed men broke into a woodlawn town house. the second home invasion in two days, and as one reporter explains this time someone got hurt. >> for neighbors in the woodlawn community, news of thursday morning's home invasion is frightening. >> it worries me. i live across the street. i don't want to hear stuff like that. >> well, it is shocking. i mean i don't know if there's been a spike in crime in the area. usually we'll receive a call saying you know something's going on in the area. but no, this would be the second incident since i lived here though. >> sometime before 8:00 a.m., police say two men broke into a town house. a woman was inside at the time. >> at this point we do know they were armed with a handgun, forced their way into the home and there was a confrontation inside the home. the victim did suffer injuries. >> according to a neighbor who does not want to be identified the victim was able to get away

from her assail yents long enough to jump out from the second story window, injuring her ankle in the process. >> he knocked on the door screaming and hollering, said someone broke in trying to rob the house. they kept demanding money, they had a crowbar and they hit her with the craw bore and she jumped out the window. when he jumped out the window the suspects ran. >> meanwhile police say they've arrested a suspect in that other home invasion. authorities say michael williams and two other suspects held a 73-year-old woman and her 22-year-old grandson at gun point wednesday. the victims say their attackers made off with several thousand dollars and two computers. williams is now out on $250,000 bonds, but police are still looking for other two suspects. truth in the rumors. coming up in this afternoon's educational alert, dr. joe hairston confirms his plans for

>> today marks 10 years since the start of the american war in afghanistan. and washington has no big plans for the anniversary. the u.s. went to war with the nation less than a month after the september 11 terrorist attacks. more than 1,700 u.s. soldiers have been killed in the war. as well as tens of thousands of afghan troops and civilians. the war is now the longest running conflict in american history. colvering the nation this afternoon, a missouri couple is still searching for their missing 10 month old daughter. deb debra bradley and jeremy say their daughter disappeared monday night. now they are just hoping for her safe return. >> she's everything. she's our little girl. she's completed our family and she means everything to my boys.

we -- we need her home. i can't live without her. >> police say the parents are no longer cooperating with authorities. but the family denies that claim. so far no leads or suspects in the little girl's disappearance. and this was the scene near a small illinois town this morning where a freight train derailed and then exploded the train was carrying ethanol. 26 of its cars overturned and the nearby town had to be evacuated. it took fires and hasmut crews nearly five hours to get the scene under control. luckily no injuries have been reported. that is quite a scene. coming up this afternoon's con sumer deal, the sweet deal they are hoping will drive in major business. how good is your memory. experts say it's probably not as good as you think. we'll explain in this afternoon's medical alert. >> well this week going into the weekend we've developed a very favorable weather pattern here. how long will it hold together? talk about the weekend forecast in a minute.

>> in this afternoon's education alert dr. joe hairston makes an official decision. the baltimore county scule superintendent says he will not seek re-election. he said 12 years is a tremendous run for any. his current contract is set to expire june 30 of next year. and one woman sits on the board of the maryland school for the blind. she said she hopes to encourage state legislators to provide finance to students will have better access to technology. she's also been appointed to the kennedy krieger board and the board at townsend university which she says is especially important because it's the largest producer of teachers in maryland.

moving onto this afternoon's consumer report, rolling out an unlimited data phone. the wireless carrier said it will sell the original iphone h. unlimited data plans will cost between $70 and $100. neither at&t or verizon offer unlimited data plans and sprint says they hope their plans will attract new customers. well, if you're house hunting or looking to refinance listen up, the average rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage has fallen to 3.94%. and to 3.26% on a 15-year fixed mortgage. that's good news for anyone who can get past the tough credit requirements. a homeowner paying 5 .09% would save about $2,000 a year on a $250,000 mortgage lone. expialidocious perts say they should consider waiting since it's typically costing a few thousand dollars in closing costs.

>> now your 11 weather forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> well, to take a look at the radar review we have to kind of widen the picture out a little bit because we're clean as a whistle, all this sunshine and everything. there's a storm brewing off the coast of florida. easterly winds coming off the high pressure that's giving us good weather is producing some rain down in florida. the second day in the a row for that. big storm is expected to develop down there over the weekend. eventually we'll drift in that direction and change our weather next week. that's a few days away. also some unsettled weather out to the west, a lot of rain, especially in montana, the mountains, the mountains have gotten some snow. that too will be coming in our direction. we'll get a squeeze play here. but that's a few days away. it is the tale end of summer, we are still dealing with pollen, though the numbers are very low. grass pollins, count of one, so the total pollen count is one. most count has gone up, the ground is really moist, so i guess so.

1138, so that's in the high range. current temperatures around the area, we've gone into the green, so that's 60, 66 cambridge, westminster 56, fred ricks up to 72. they were 39 for the low this morning. 64 at oakland right now. here's that high pressure. andt really covers a big piece of the eastern part of the united states. and here's the stormy weather out to the west. all right so the high has to get out of the way before the stuff from the west can come in. or really the storm we expect to develop off the florida coast to come up the coast. and that will be one of these things i want to call a hurricane wanna be. it may not become a hurricane or tropical weather feature but it's going to spin a lot of moisture in our direction. it looks like based on the computer models sometime during the week next week. but for the time being this big high pressure will keep us in great shape right through the weekend. we look at some temperatures, we see still some cool readings

right along the eastern seaboard. the mid-atlantic and a big warming trend in the central part of the nation, the low's this morning, even international falls were in the 60's, so this milder air is kind of drifting in our direction. today will be in the low 70's, sunny skies, seasonal temperatures, northeast winds, 270 miles per hour. boaters in the bay, a light northeast wind, five knots, a one foot chop. the bay water temperatures are in the 60's. future cast shows that high holding steady here keeping the stormy weather to the west and there's that storm swirling around in the atlantic monday morning and trying to work its way up the coast so this high will keep us protected, at least into monday. here's the seven day forecast. 73 today, 76 saturday, sunday 80. 81 on monday. good sunny conditions right up through then. but we pick up clouds on tuesday. by tuesday night into wednesday and thursday, that's when the rain comes back in the forecast. >> in this afternoon's medical

alert, sports related brain injuries among children are on the rise. the centers for disease control say e.r. visits for childhood brain injuries are increased by 60% over the last 10 years. biking, sports like football, basketball and soccer were the largest contributors. experts say the new numbers are alarming because children with head injuries could suffer learning or memory problems. and while experts are concerned with children losing their memories, some are pointing out adult memories aren't always as strong as we think. we take a closer look at how accurate our memories are. >> most people think their memory is pretty accurate. faithfully recording what happened just like film or a video camera. not even close, says dr. elizabeth who's devoted her life to studying memory. >> the truth is that memory is mallable. we take in information, but over the course of other activities in life, we can distort or

transform, or alter that information and memory. >> that's why so many pictures line the walls of roosevelt university gallery. these are all people who were wrongfully convicted and then exonerated, often because of somebody's faulty memory. >> when it comes to somebody's freedom, then very precise memory matters. >> she says that's the problem. the most imprecise memories are of traumatic injuries, shocking and frightening events are not the most easily remembered. >> that's not the way things work. when it comes to a highly stressful event memory can be impaired. >> and she said memory is muddy because humans want to feel good about themselves and actions. >> we remember we gave more to charity than we really did. or we voted in elections that we didn't vote in. or that our grades were better than they really were.
