a spectacular show that was surrounded in controversy. today, sunday, october 9, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome on a sunday morning. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolfe. let's take a look at this live shot from london. the front entrance of paul mccartney's house. today, he's about to get married. maybe in an hour or so to nancy shevell, long-time girlfriend from here in new york. this, his third marriage. we don't know that much about it. they've kept it very low key. >> these are the photographers who didn't get the dress code memo, waiting for the comings and goings. they didn't really formally announce today was the day, but clearly it's happening. >> you know what else that is? the second british wedding that neither of us were invited to.

continuing to rack that up. number two. power to the people. occupy wall street protest started a small group, but it's a movement that spread across the country. washington is taking notice. the latest on all of this, coming up. plus, get ready for the new oprah winfrey. her network hammered by low ratings, oprah is giving own a makeover and putting herself back on the air and bringing rosie o'donnell on the air. will it work? we'll find out. the latest on the desperate for the latest search for baby lisa irwin. tomorrow marks one week since the girl vanished from her kansas city home. jay gray is live in kansas city with the latest. jay, what's happening there? >> reporter: good to talk to you, lester. police spent more than five hours here after getting permission from lisa's parents to search the property literally

from top to bottom. crime scene investigators returned to lisa irwin's home late saturday. for the second day in a row, scanning the yard with metal detectors, digging through leaves, sifting through bushes and moving inside the home for a closer look. detectives shifting kids' toys, taking boxes from shelves and focusing for several minutes on the front door. after more than an hour, firefighters joined in the search. providing ladders so investigators could climb through the roof to comb through storm gutters and peer into vents. police worked until late into the night. during what was by far the most intense and longest search since the 10-month-old was allegedly pulled from her crib. >> no tip led to this. we're doing everything we can. and any time another idea comes up, we'll give it a shot and this is a result of that. >> reporter: detectives did take at least one bag of evidence from the house.

they won't say what they found, though the search apparently did reveal a shift in what police had called a strained relationship between investigators and lisa's parents. >> this afternoon, the family sat down with detectives. their house, their child, they live here. who knows more about who has come and gone from this home than they do? they need to be part of this investigation. >> reporter: an investigation that after five full days according to police, has failed to provide any solid leads, clear suspects, or substantial evidence. >> we've tracked down well -- around 250 leeds and tips. checked out the ones we can so far, nothing has really led to anything. >> reporter: and as investigators finally pulled away late saturday night, an uneasy silence. returned to this neighborhood. a quiet that's become hauntingly familiar since baby lisa disappeared. and while lisa's parents are,

again, speaking with investigators, they did not talk to the media on saturday. a cousin says they spent most of the day working to establish a fund that will create a reward for any information that might help them find their little girl. lester. >> jay gray, thank you. here is jenna. let's switch gears and turn to the presidential campaign and the issue of faith. fallout continues after a prominent texas pastor preysed rick perry for his religion but attacked mitt romney, calling the mormon church a cult. mike viqueira is live in washington with more. >> reporter: good morning, jenna. more fallout from the texas pastor's comments, attacking not only mitt romney's faith, but the faith of millions of mormons around the world. after years of wrestling with the issue of religion, faith, and politics, it's raising questions about how much it all still matters. >> crossed that line i think. poisonous language doesn't advance our cause. >> a day after his faith came under attack, mitt romney called

for unity from social conservatives. >> the task before us is to focus on conservative beliefs and the items that unit us. let no agenda narrow our vision or drive us apart. >> reporter: this was on full view at the values voter summit. and rick perry was preyaised fo his devout faith. back stage, jeffers made his view on romney's faith clear. >> it's not christianity, always considered a cult by the mainstream of christianity. >> reporter: perry says he does not agree. and prominent conservatives condemned the pastor. >> do not give voice to bigotry. did you rick perry no good, sir, on? what you had to say. >> reporter: but later, jeffers did not back down. >> we ought to be able to say, yes, i believe that a christian in office is better than a

nonchristian. >> reporter: with romney atop in the polls, many saw this controversy coming. >> i want to thank him for notm. i know it's there and i know it's tempting. >> i'm going to do it soon, real soon, you just wait. >> reporter: romney isn't the only candidate who had faith called into question. last year, 20% of americans mistakenly thought president obama is a muslim. first time he to defend his faith. as a candidate in 2007. >> if i'm for the natutunate to your president, i had serve no one religion, no one cause or interest. >> a recent survey shows a third of white he vevangelicals would less likely to support a candidate if they were mormon. those numbers have hardly changed since the last campaign. >> these things have taken time in the past with regard to other

faiths and so sometimes it is a long period of time until attitudes change. >> reporter: and, lester, there is turmoil across the political spectrum. yesterday, day 23 of occupy wall street protests where you are in manhattan, several thousand marching up to washington square parking notable as the site of several high-profile vietnam era protests, these protests have spread to several cities. more than a dozen across the country and while democrats from president obama on down have been supportive or empathetic toward the cause of the marchers, several high-profile republicans, eric cantor and herman cain among them, have condemned them. many are not supporting either side in the political debate. neither of them are doing enough to narrow the gap between rich and poor and that's why they are marching to begin with. >> david gregory, moderator of "meet the press" good morning to

you. >> good morning, lester. >> listening to the growing numbers of of people in the occupy wall street movement and some have compared it to the tea party, it doesn't sound like the group has a political policy type voice, still does washington have to pay close attention? >> well, washington is paying close attention. i think that the president and the vice president worked hard to try to get out in front of that movement while it still may not be completely singular in its message. and to get out in front and say, yeah, there is frustration about unfair innocence the country. more populous anger on the streets and making its way into the race for the white house, and i think you heard the president talking about understanding, empathizing with protesters, sounding a lot more like a populous now as he gets into re-election mode, to say that wall street is being unfair with new bank fees, to say that the middle class is somehow getting the raw end of the deal in what is still a very sluggish

economic recovery. that's where he wants to position himself now as he gets into re-election. it's a bit of a change from the president who brought in a new chief of staff, who had good ties with the business community, who talked about tightening the belt of washington, and, of course, made the case for why some of those bailouts were necessary for wall street at the time. >> let me get your thoughts about this controversy over this pastor, who supports rick perry who made the comments about mormonism as a cult. is that going to attach itself to perry in some form or fashion? is it going to hurt him? >> well, we don't know yet. this was kind of -- this was a kerfuffle, not exactly clear, but the message from pastor jeffers was clear about the view of some evangelical christians that mormonism is a cult. the evangelical vote is important in this country, particularly in the republican primary in states like south

carolina, so it may be an issue. a lot of the republican establishment will say they think it's not difficult to dissearch frdis discern from polling alone. it's enough of an issue that others will say to perry, you know what? the right response in that circumstance was to distance yourself. and he said we ought to have a christian in the race, you hit it out of park is that the kind of response that is going to raise more questions for perry at a time when -- and this is important -- he doesn't need more distractions. he has to get focused and get into the race. >> what's coming up this morning on "meet the press". >> special edition from chicago. an exclusive interview with rahm emanuel and more with vice president biden and paul ryan will be here in chicago with me as well. >> thank you very much. tom llamas has more of the day's

news for the tabloids. this time, things appear differently. >> stella was famously anti-heather mills from the beginning. paul has his support with regard to his relationship with nancy. >> reporter: paul is set to show all you need is love and a little patience to find happiness again. well, jenna, a flurry of excitement earlier when paul and nancy got in a vehicle and left. they returned shortly after, no sign of them just yet at the registry office. but there are some interesting details about coming out in the papers here. it said that beatrice, the 7-year-old with heather mills will be the only bridesmaid and flower girl, only about 30 people. and paul mccartney will serenade his new bride with three songs "let it be," "let me roll it" and one he penned just for the special event.

>> good morning. i'm jennifer franciotti. it is 8:26. here's a look at some of our top stories for you. a fight between two women spirals out of control at a baltimore county walmart. the fight broke out at the walmart in arbutus. it charlotted when one woman assaulted another outside the store. the victim ran inside. the suspect followed her and began pouring bleach on her and pinesol and fabric soft ner. two dozen people were taken to the hospital. >> we transported 19 patients.

none with what were believed to be serious injuries with the exception of one patient with bleach to the eyes to the wilmer eye clinic. >> two firefighters recovering after battling a car fire. it started in a basement after 2:00 p.m. we're told there were people at the home at the time that they were able to get out safely. two firefighters were treated at bay view for nonlife threatening injuries and no word on thow how that fire began.

manslaughter trial against conrad murray. held yesterday in wales. an all-star show, but one that has jackson's family divided. michelle kosinkski joins us with more. >> reporter: hey, jenna. what a strange confluenceñi of events it's çóbeen. michael jackson was preparing for a series of comeback concerts here in london when he died and while his doctor is on trial there was this big tribute concert in wales. that timing split the jackson family. some siblings, jermaine, randy and janet wanted nothing to do with it. jackson's mother was there, and most touchingly, his three children on stage together, dressed in clothing just like michael's, introduced acts, seemed to be having a wonderful time. and while some artists like black eyed peas and jennifer hudson pulled out at the very last minute, it was indeed star studded.ñi
