republican presidential ran dates are in new hampshire gearing up for tone's economic-themed debate. the latest polls show mitt romney out in front while herman cain's recent surge in the polls will shine a brighter spotlight on him. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with more on this. >> reporter: good morning. each candidate has an agenda going into this debate tonight. mitt romney needs to maintain herman cain needs to show why he's moving up, and rick perry needs to prove he can survive. >> appreciate you being here today. >> reporter: front-runner mitt romney has a 37% lead in new hampshire where tonight's debate is supposed to focus on the economy. >> government will spend whatever you give them and then some. and so my view is, hey, guys, let's not talk about taking more of the money of the american people. let's talk about living within the means. >> reporter: but questions about romney's mormon faith are likely to surface tonight, along with criticism of the health plan he created as governor of massachusetts.

>> time and again the white house has pointed to massachusetts law as the model for obama care. >> i agree with romney. >> reporter: romney called rick perry light on immigration. that could come up tonight. perry's raising lots of money but sinking in the polls after a poor debate performance. >> this debate this week will be very important for rick perry to prove himself he's in that top tier candidate status. >> reporter: businessman herman cain will show why he's surging ahead. he said he's ready forgo got ya questions. >> when people understand it, they will support it and demand it. >> that's part of what -- >> reporter: michele bachmann, jon huntsman, rick santorum will be looking to prove they need the tom nation or stay in the race. today president obama travels to pittsburgh to tour a union

training facility and push his jobs plan there. >> tracie potts for us in washington, thanks so much. with protesters in new york showing no signs of letting up in their demonstrations against wall street and what they call corporate greed, they now plan to get a little personal. according to crane's new york business, today protesters are planning what's being called a millionaire's march. they will visit some of the homes of new york's wealthiest, including rupert murdoch and jp morgan chase's jamie dimond. mayor bloomberg has softened his stance on the demonstrators say they can express themselves as long as they stay within the law. 56% of americans are heard about the occupy wall street movement. 27% agree with the overall position. and 19% disagree. and now here's a look at some other stories making news "early today" in america. one california homeowner has a pricey repair job on their

hands. a massive tree fell onto a house, causing $200,000 worth of damage. the tree also took out power lines, but it's unclear if any homes in the area lost power. one person inside the home at the time was not hurt. what caused the tree to fall is still unknown. a sting operation to catch car thieves netted horrible results for arlington, texas, police. a pickup truck used to bait thieves wound up parked in a living room after a suspected thief drove it into a home. no one was injured and police are still looking for the suspect. employees inside a pennsylvania cell phone store ran for their lives when a deer spent over an hour inside the shop, causing damage to a bathroom and knocking over a monitor before exiting out the front door. and finally in upstate new york, folks there had a smashing

incredible stretch for new england. that's now coming to an end. clouds have moved in overnight. it won't be completely cloudy but a thin overcast during much of the day. yesterday, everyone was once again warm. today it's going to be similar. not a lot of cold air coming your way but more cloud. you can see the moisture streaming up from florida. that's heading northward. in the carolinas don't expect anything in the way of sunshine. on and off rain through georgia, up through virginia throughout the afternoon. here's a look at the current radar. eastern north carolina has rain. raleigh, soon that will be arriving in your area. and numerous little areas of showers and storms right along the coast from charleston to myrtle beach to savannah, you'll be ducking the rain during the morning, even in atlanta we'll have showers, too. that will keep the temperatures down cool, only 67. much cooler in boston today, highs only in the 60s instead of the mid-80s. that's a look at your tuesday forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. all the active weather is really in the east coast. we will see a few showers and

government of failing to stop thugs and soldiers from turning a peaceful protest into clashes that killed at least 26 people, mostly christians. this weekend's incident was the worst sectarian violence since the uprising eight months ago. a new united nations report says suspected taliban fighters have been subjected to beatings, electric shock and other forms of torture in afghan-run detention centers based on interviews with more than 300 suspects linked to the insurgency. the findings raised questions about whether u.s. officials knew or should have known about what was happening. the afghan government challenged the allegations but also pledged to investigate them. seven people who spent almost a day at sea after their boat capsized off florida's coast have been rescue. the survivors, including a 4-year-old, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. one woman is missing and presumed dead. and an american treasure

the dow opens at 11,433 after surging 330 points yesterday. the s&p climbed 39 points. the nasdaq went up 86. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei gained 168 points. while in hong kong, the hang seng jumped 430. what a difference a few days can make. after last week's close encounter with bear territory, markets have made an impressive comeback. that rally continued in asia this morning where gains were driven by fresh optimism out of europe and news china bought up mainland banking shares to prop up its struggling market. back on the street, stocks surged after european leaders promised to come up with a solution to its debt crisis by the end of the month. that fueled the dow's biggest one-day gain in two months. aluminum maker alocoa jumped 4% ahead of the quarterly report which unofficially kicks off third quarter earning season

today. reports yahoo's founder may take the company private sent its shares up 2%. preorders for apple's iphone 4s topped 1 million on its first day out of the gate, shattering the previous record sending apple shares up 5%. meanwhile, print nextel tumbled 8% on the costs of upgrading its network to carry the iphone. netflix finished 5% lower after initial rising on news it crashed its plan to split dvd rentals and streaming. spokesman for the new york stock exchange denied reports its website was disrupted twice yesterday. the hacking group anonymous threatened an attack. elsewhere, facebook released a long-awaited app for apple ipad users. the longest running automobile appears to be a solid investment. the steam powered car built in 1884 fetched a record-setting $4.6 million at auction.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports last night the texas rangers relied on a one-man wrecking crew against the detroit tigers in american league championship series. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. history made in the alcs and it took 11 innings to happen. game two, rangers/tigers. rangers down a run with nelson cruz crushed one. no doubt about that. solo shot tied the game 3-3. stayed that way until the 11th. sacks full and cruz again. this time a walkoff grand slam. first in postseason history. rangers are on cruise control leading 2-0. milwaukee where pujols put on a show. the plot thickened in the third.

pujols drove one to deep center. morgan was there to make the grab but couldn't come up with it. cards up 5-0. how about the finale, another double, another run. take a bow, albert. four hits, five rbi. cards even the series with a 12-3 win. as many expected the nba has canceled the first two weeks of the regular season. owners and players union met for seven hours yesterday and came up empty. two sides will remain in contact but no formal meetings have been scheduled. nfl, detroit hosting its first monday night game in over a decade. fans fired up and lions gave them reason to cheer. scoreless in the second. matt stafford up to calvin johnson, fought off the defender and are six. in the third, hit the hole and he was going 88 yards for the touchdown. somebody pinch me. the lions are 5-0 for the first time since 1956. they beat the bears 24-13. finally, we've seen great hits on football fields but nothing compares to this one in
