for the city's hotels, at least in terms of hotel rooms used for labor day weekend. race promoters may have hoped for a sellout of rooms. fact, hotel occupancy for the race weekend was not all that different from labor day last year. the three day hotel occupancy rate was 68.8%. the three day average this year, 69.4%. the mayor says it is no reason to be disappointed. >> if you look at the expected attendance and actual attendance, we know that more people came to town than we even anticipated. they might not have all stayed in our hotels, but we know they came. >> hotels did bring in substantially more income this year. this year, hotel revenues for $3.6 million, 52% higher, the result of hotels charging higher rates. still to come, the weekend's impact on local hiring and local business. in little italy, some restaurant

police are investigating a deadly shooting in baltimore city that happened just before 11:30 this morning. police confirmed a man was shot and died at the scene. no word on the victim's name or a possible suspect. police say they know who was behind the wheel of a hit and run accident that killed a woman this morning. it happened around 2:45 as the woman was walking along druid hill avenue in northeast baltimore. investigators said there processed and released a suspect, but will not say if they will be pressing any charges. the woman was about 30 years old, but there is no confirmation on her identity. >> a major contender is continuing to look for votes to make it to the general election. >> the state-by-state battle begins in iowa and new hampshire. that is where tonight's gop debate is taking place. who and what to watch for a head, covering the nation. beck's federal prosecutors

the cards for drivers in maryland. a panel of transportation funding was meeting today to look at ways the state can begin to take in more money for infrastructure. they are expected to work out different options for the depleted transportation trust fund, including applying a 6% sales tax to gasoline. we all know about expiration dates on our food, but many parents don't realize there are also expiration dates on their children's car safety seats. allison patten has three children and is expecting twins. she wanted to use a car seat bought in 2003, but she was told that it was expired. there was a warning, do not use this car seat after december 2008. experts say the seat needs to have a shelf life for a number of reasons. >> the shell inside that we cannot see internally can be broken down and worn out.
