we remember a woman who had a face for tv and the heart of gold. patricia modell, groundbreaking actress and wife of former ravens owner art modell passed away today at the age of 80. gerry sandusky joins us live in the studio with a look at her legacy. >> pat modell knew a few things about the spotlight. a major tv star in the 1950's and 1960's, she gave up a starring role in it general hospital for a role she clearly love, that of mrs. art modell, a wife and mother. she had a significant impact on two towns, cleveland and baltimore. she married in 1969, stepped out of the spotlight and said goodbye to television to raise her family. she came to baltimore with a focus on contributing. she let her family's philanthropic efforts in health care, education and art, and theater, served on a number of nonprofit boards. mrs. modell also served on cut

the boards of dozens and dozens of organizations. >> she put her imprint in a way that only the people in the organizations could probably describe to you. little people, big people, blue- collar workers, battered women, children, she loved children. she worshipped children. that kind of passion, combined with her grace, her class, is such a model that i don't know how we will replicated. i really don't. >> quite a legacy. with the use of voters from her days as an actress or saw are paying a visit to ravens get, you could not help thinking that is what class looks like. >> baltimore mayor stephanie

the attackers. the sheriff's office in carroll county is now trying to figure out what happened to a westminster teenager. we are told a passer-by found the body of 17-year-old caleb mott. officials say he was last seen leaving a friend's house early tuesday morning. if you have any information, you are asked to contact a carroll county sheriff's department. tonight, students and staff at chesapeake high school are trying to cope with the sudden death of a student. 17-year-old kayla austin was killed in a crash during the busy morning rush-hour on mountain road near fair would drive in pasadena. neighbors say that stretch of road is particularly dangerous. >> it is very difficult situation, every parent's worst nightmare. >> 17-roquet austin was a popular, have become an outstanding student at

chesapeake high school. >> she was likely on her way to school a little after 7:30 in the morning, driving east on mountain road, when police say she lost control, crossed the center line, and slammed into an abandoned home on the other side of the street. she was rushed to hospital but died from her industries -- died from her injuries. >> to many accidents. you always hear about accidents happening on this mountain road. >> this neighbor says it is often an congested during the morning and evening rush hours. >> it is a speedway. drivers are more concerned about getting to their destination than they are about safety issues. as far as the traffic, not enough roadway to accommodate the traffic. >> mountain road has lights

controlling the lanes of traffic flowing east or west down, depending on the time of day. police are still investigating exactly what caused the accident. friends have put up a makeshift memorial to kayla at the crash site. >> the students are hearing that a friend of theirs has died, and it is shocking situation. today was about trying to put the support systems in place for students to begin that process of grieving. >> about 1800 students attend chesapeake high school. reif counselors will be on hand for the rest of the week for both teachers and students. >> tonight a baltimore county jury is preparing to hear opening statements tomorrow in the trial of a man accused of killing a teenager. rochelle battle's body was never found, but authorities believe that jason gross killed the girl inside his middle river home. this is baltimore county second murder trial in which nobody was down.

tonight a southern california community is in shock after eight people were killed at a hair salon. a gunman walked into a salon in seal beach this afternoon and simply open fire. a ninth person remains in critical condition. seal beach is not accustomed to this kind of violence. records show the city had only one homicide last year, and none during the three previous years. >> i think it was a loud noise, that is why everyone was curious and went outside. >> buchholz lon had this wonderful spirit in there. it is tragedy. >> police a man in custody as they had multiple weapons. the motive is unclear, but the suspects s wife reportedly works at the salon. there is no word if she is among the victims. a school bus attended in florida is facing child abuse charges

after below support -- after a video was released showing her pounding on a 14-rolle boy. officials say the 70-year-old apparently got a set at his roughhousing with another voice so she stepped in. the attendant claim she was acting in self-defense. the so-called underwear bomber pleaded guilty to all eight charges against him. abdul mutallab was accused of trying to blow up a plane headed to detroit on christmas day 2009. the plan failed when the bomb inside his pants did not detonate. the nigerian man faces life in prison when he is sentenced in january. today lawyers representing dr. conrad murray said they are dropping the claim that michael jackson swallowed a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol while the doctor was not looking. at one point, that was the doctor's primary defense.

>> in a surprising move, lawyers for dr. conrad murray dropped a plan that jackson may have swallowed propofol after the defense commissioned a study that showed any effect from swallowing the anesthetic would be trivial. meanwhile, testimony continued with a cardiologists from the california medical board to review jackson's case. the doctor told the court that he found six deviations in care given by dr. murray and that those alleged missteps directly contributed to the pop star's death. >> giving someone propofol in someone's home and monitor, without the proper equipment, medical personnel, or back up was also an extreme deviation from the standard of care. >> under cross-examination, dr. steinberg's board with the defense, holding firm in his opinion. >> dr. murray just been nine hours trying to get him to sleep, and now you are telling me he should have awakened him? >> he should not be putting him

axa officials oracle negating a series of accidents involving vehicles crashing into buildings. we were over the scene where a driver slammed into a pizza business. fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries. within minutes, another vehicle crashed into an office building in the phoenix area baltimore county. a minivan hit a printing business. the driver was not injured in the crash, and luckily no one was inside the building at the time. fire officials are waiting for a building inspector to determine the total damage.

a new academic policy is raising the bar for high school freshman across maryland. students who want to attend any state college are now required to complete at least for math courses. the university system of maryland leads to many first to college students are taking remedial math courses. the change will help put students on the right track. >> we think this is beneficial to the students. a lot of them may be complaining about it right now, but in the long run, this is what is going to make them successful in college and in life when they get out of college. >> the course work includes algebra one, geometry, algebra to, and what is called nontrivial algebra. students will need all for to get accepted into a maryland college. students at towson university will be featured in an upcoming episode of the ellen degeneres

west in chicago is moving in our direction, too. we might squeeze in a few hours of dry conditions tomorrow and may be a break in the cloud cover toward the afternoon or evening. a second round of showers, scattered showers, clouds and a few sprinkles around the area tomorrow. a line of showers rolls through on friday, and maybe a rumble of thunder with that front making its way through. by friday evening, it is clearing out rapidly as high pressure comes in behind the front. it looks like we will enjoy quite a bit of sunshine for the upcoming weekend. 72-77 tomorrow, a little warmer than today, but still the risk of a shower popping up. out in western maryland where the leaves are turning color, black olives and showers will linger through friday, but saturday and sunday look gorgeous. scattered showers will continue until it clears out over the

>> since they arrived in baltimore 16 years ago, art and pat modell came as a complementary pair. today the former ravens owner lost his wife and best friend. pat modell past following a brief stay in hospice after spending the past few months in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment. if you called her mrs. modell, she would wait first hand and say, please call me pat. she leaves behind a husband and two sons and six grandchildren. to all who met and knew her, she leaves behind the aura of a star, the passion of a mom, and was a friend. she was 80 years old. barring an unforeseeable turnaround for andrea johnson, the ravens will not have to worry about one of the most
