we're back with more of "today" on a thursday morning, the 13th day of october, 2011. some people hanging around with us this morning. we thank them for that on kind of a cooler, damper day here in the northeast. i'm matt lauer with ann curry. al roker and savannah guthrie and unfortunately talk about a tragic story out of california. a man goes into a hair salon in seal beach, opens fire. at least eight people were killed. the man was taken into custody a short time later. what was the motive? what drove him to this? we'll be talking about that in
9:01 am
this half hour. meantime have you guys heard about this operation hacker-azzi? basically this florida guy now accused of hacking into the e-mail accounts of a lot of celebrities. in fact, more than 50 people including people like scarlett johansson, in some cases photographs that the star did not want splashed all over the internet that were so we'll tell you more about that arrest. >> all right. and today's prfrofessionals are back with their strong opinions on interesting topics including whether sexy ads on billboards should be allowed near schools. there is a new law that outlaws that. we'll talk about that. also tough to find a good baby-sitter so what about the idea of rent a grandma? we'll talk about that with star jones, donny deutsch, and dr. nancy all here ready to chat. >> i would have done that. >> a great idea actually. >> i would have done that. because we live on the east coast. >> yeah. exactly. and then some health habits that you think are good for you could be bad. one that matt and i might be guilty of.
9:02 am
too much hand sanitizer. daily nutrition supplements. cardio workouts. we'll tell you why you could be overdoing it and actually hurting your health in the long run. >> have you bought into any of this stuff? we keep saying this stuff about how over sanitizing could be bad for you. >> probably three, four times a day. but, you know, over the course of a day. >> an hour? >> no, no. >> they have the stuff in their pockets. >> let's go inside. natalie is standing by at the news desk with the headlines. good morning, everyone. police in southern california are still investigating a motive in wednesday's beauty salon massacre that left eight people dead and another wounded. the alleged gunman is in custody. nbc's kristen dahlgren is in seal beach with more. good morning, kristen. >> good morning, natalie. this is a small, close-knit beach community. many here know at least one of the eight people who were killed. another woman remains in critical condition this morning. police say that every station

was full when 42-year-old scott derkaai allegedly opened fire here at the salon. police say he was wearing full body armor and carrying multiple weapons. six women and two men were killed. police arrested derkaai about a half mile from here. they say he surrendered peacefully but had multiple weapons in his truck. as for a motive police aren't saying but those who knew the victims say derkaai's ex-wife worked as a stylist at the salon. they tell us the two were involved in a custody dispute. police are expected to release names of the victims later today, natalie. >> kristen dahlgren in seal beach this morning, thank you. former godfather's pizza ceo herman cain now leads the republican presidential field in the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. cain, known for his simplified 999 flat tax plan has a slim lead over former massachusetts governor mitt romney. former front runner rick perry dropped 20 points to third place. meantime, 63% of those polled favored president obama's jobs plan even though the president's low approval rating was

websites. ditto for rene olsted just two of the more than 50 victims of the alleged hack attack. >> we at the department of justice take this crime very seriously. christina aguilera according to the fbi also had her e-mails hacked as did simone harusch. a 26-count indictment charges christopher chaney of jacksonville, florida with violating federal anti-hacking and identity theft laws. he is free on $10,000 bond. the fbi says the accused hacker scanned celebrity magazines, twitter, and facebook accounts for information about the celebrities who were targeted. virtually all of these victims were compromised because the alleged hacker mr. chaney mined through publicly available data and figured out passwords and security questions. >> reporter: the authorities say he was not trying to profit from the alleged hacking. >> while there is certainly a celebrity aspect of this case, i want to emphasize that all users
9:06 am
of computer and digital devices are potentially victims of this very same type of cyber attack. >> reporter: the problem, authorities say, is that too many e-mail users, including celebrities, use passwords like the names of pets or birth dates that are too easy to guess. >> i hope this serves as a clear and important lesson for potential victims to protect their information and their computers. >> reporter: but in this digital era whether you're famous or not privacy has become an increasingly perishable commodity. chaney has not yet entered a plea. he has another court appearance coming up in florida tomorrow morning. natalie? >> all right. george lewis in los angeles, thank you. it is beginning to look a lot like christmas already. we've got a sneak peek of the radio city music hall rockettes rehearsing for their annual christmas spectacular. the rockettes and their sky high kicks are a nearly 80-year tradition here in new york. we always love them. it is now six minutes past the hour. let's go back outside to matt

9:08 am
>> things should improve this afternoon. the high temperature will and that's your latest weather. savannah? >> al, thanks. now to today's professionals where our panel of power players break down the hottest headlines. surveys and studies making news. star jones is an attorney and author. donny deutsch is chairman of deutsch incorporated and dr. nancy snyderman is nbc's chief medical editor. good morning to all of you. >> do you notice nancy always touches me at the beginning of the segment? >> like you guys have your little moment. >> i need the energy. >> she is transferring her power to you. okay. let's start with demi and ashton. i don't know if any of us really
9:09 am
knows what's going on behind closed doors between these two but it would appear there are marital problems because there's this 22-year-old woman who is talking to "us weekly" about her one night stand with ashton that took place on their sixth anniversary. >> she needs to shut up. >> that may be the case. >> there are two things. you live by the sword you die by the sword. people who are so engaged in social media and tweet about every single thing and then something bad happens you go radio silent and people are going to assume the worst. this is part of, you know, the age we live in. but i have to say, agree with star. this blonde who allegedly slept with him, shame on her. >> hold on a second. >> i love hearing the women say this. because obviously -- >> it's disgusting. >> why are we focusing on the woman sh she's not married. he is the one who's married. >> she is giving the interviews. i am sick of her. >> i love that. >> one time being a hoochy does not make it an affair or a mistress.
9:10 am
>> you're in the papers for a day. this is going to stay with you the rest of your life. i think it is so great thaw womthat you women are firing back at these one timers if you will. >> obviously insane. why are we focusing all of our ire on this woman in setting aside whether or not she should be in the magazine. >> i love it. this is why i do the show with you guys. >> it's because demi is the only one who has the right to focus her ire on ashton. she's married to him. we are not. we get to focus our ire on the hoochy on the cover of "us" magazine. >> i tell you, this fascinates me. another thing i have to ask you. if you are a famous person and you are going to meet someone in a bar and then hook up with them i just assume you don't care if it ends up in the papers because -- >> temptation is around every corner for people who live in this high, intense celebrity life. >> i think there is another issue also. i want to talk about the age issue. i think it's about 20 years, can maybe not be an issue when you're 25 and 45 because you're
9:11 am
still maybe in the same life stage. as the life stages move for instance if you're 70 and 50 i think the age difference becomes more challenging at different periods and this could be that point. >> not so much when men are older. >> same thing. >> but i don't know, home cooking or doing nothing, i mean, she is out. she has projects. she's beautiful. i take your point about they may be at different stages but she seems to be a very vibrant woman. >> i'm not sure we can ascribe that it's all over because they've had some issues, relationships have issues. just like anybody's relationship. the biggest problem though is when you invite the public into your private space. and i know a little something about that. it's really hard to close the door. the public has expect -- >> it takes more than an affair to break up a relationship but this kind of public scrutiny is very tough. >> just to put an end on it star and nancy do you think it has anything to do with the age difference? donny thinks it may. >> i'm just saying in generally
9:12 am
think it becomes more challenging. >> look, gravity plays a role as you get older and so you can have a -- i just think it may be tough. i don't know. >> i saw them over the holiday a couple years ago and demi is banging. i don't think it has to do with any of that. >> i don't think gravity applies to her. she looks great. >> she is -- >> i got it. >> moving on. next topic prison inmates as firefighters. so many states, counties are facing bud troub so a novel idea which is to use prison inmates as firefighters. >> stupid, stupid, and more stupid. >> absolutely smart. >> brilliant. >> oh, my gosh. you want a criminal -- >> absolutely. >> to come into your home, a person who is -- no. they said thieves and drug dealers. >> excuse me. >> look at the prisons and see who is in the prisons. we have a lot of people in prison who shouldn't be in prison. >> even if they are prisoners, if basically for no money you
9:13 am
can increase the safety of people, number one, help fire departments out. number two, put these prisoners to work, make them do something and at the same time maybe -- >> in my home? >> they're not walking around. they're with other firefighters. a really progressive idea. >> my house is burning down and you're telling me the bravest human beings o the earth, the so the thief does not steal my earrings? what kind of b.s. is that? >> i have three more firefighters in there and i'm not worried about my wallet. if it helps fighting fires let's do it. >> then hire firefighters. i know we have a fiscal issue but we don't sacrifice safety. >> you're right. >> trustees or even people with exemplary prison behavior, relatively minor crime you think no? >> not bringing it into somebody's house because tomorrow, excuse me, today's drug dealer and thief could be tomorrow's rapist and murderer. >> star, this is the least progressive i've ever heard you talk. >> if you're going to bring a criminal into my house talking
9:14 am
about being a firefighter -- >> if my house is burning down bring them over. >> no thank you. next topic since you're so harmonious, sexy ads banned near schools. in britain the advertising standards authority has said they will not allow, quote-unquote, sexy ads to be within a certain amount, a hundred yards of schools and nurseries. is this a good idea? you're the advertising guy. >> as an ad guy number one, first of all, who is to decide what sexy is. it is a slippery slope. >> they have a whole list of things. >> even more importantly you can't insulate your kids. that is the stupidest thing. basically your kids are going to see television. okay. just in those five minutes they're going in the bus past the school. put a bubble around them? it is the most inan thing i've heard. a waste of time. >> in san francisco there is cigarette advertising on billboards that was absolutely on purpose put in black and hispanic neighborhoods because we knew that was the way to push advertisements. we knew kids are impressionable. if these ads are over the top, i see no reason to have these billboards around schools.
9:15 am
>> it's like that's not solving the problem. >> star? >> just real quick i would worry less about the sex aspect of it and more about things that will really damage a kid like too much sugar and alcohol ads. that's what i'm more concerned about. >> our next topic, coed roommates. ucla and other schools are considering whether they would allow coeds, people to live together, boys and girls together in college dorms. >> i think ann will kill me if i say this because she's got a college-age daughter. however, i'd much rather have a nice, clean male roommate. >> there is no such thing. >> than a nasty girl. >> there is no such thing in college. >> in college? no. >> that's not true. >> look, my daughter went to the university of vermont. she lived on a coed floor but they had their own bathrooms. >> same here. >> so cohabitating on a floor is not an issue but i think if you pull college girls and say do you want to share a bathroom with a guy? the answer is no. >> freshman year university of pennsylvania we had coed bathrooms.
9:16 am
it was stumdpid. it made life more difficult. >> so people may elect not to do it but do you have a problem with it being available? >> no. if my kid can opt out. >> to star's point and i don't like her today and don't want to agree but i think if my daughter was on her own living off campus i'd want her living with a boy who she is friends with for a safety issue. there are two sides. i really don't like you. >> it's okay. >> our last topic, rent a grandma, we all love this idea, a new employment agency recruiting women of an older age. who has experience with kids? it's grandmothers. they're able to make some money as well. >> there are so many women who didn't do the main stream work force and then they get -- we cast older women aside in this kour country. what a wonderful way to harness an unused work force and help moms who need help. >> my grandma is watching right now. she is 93. >> this is a win-win. >> she is 93 years old.
