this is wbal-tv 11 news tonight. >> guilty. today baltimore county prosecutor's got their second murder conviction in a year without a body. that is our big story tonight. good evening, everyone. i am rod daniels. the jury found 36-year-old jason roose guilty in the murder of rochelle battle. she disappeared in march 2009 and was never seen or heard from since. kai reed is live at a towson courthouse where gross was convicted this afternoon. >> the state set out to prove that jason gross killed rochelle battle and then dispose of her body on his property. it has been called the first measure of closure for the teen- ager's family since she disappeared within two years ago. >> it took less than an hour and have to find jason n. rosa guilty for the killing of rochelle battle.

battle's cousin told us family members have prayed for this outcome every day since the teen disappeared in march of 2009. >> it hurts me to my heart that it happened to her. >> it was a complicated case from the very beginning. prosecutors had to prove that grows killed battle, although they were missing one important piece of evidence, her body. >> it was putting together a puzzle and every piece of that puzzle pointed to one result. >> prosecutors said that growth and battle first met in a chat room and the team took a bus from baltimore to mill river to meet him in 2009. attorneys also said that gross applied several times on audio and videotapes that were played for jurors. >> going back to him time and time, explain, because it looks like he met, and he lied each

time. each light trap him. >> his main defense was that the case included no physical evidence. investigators did not find her blood, fingerprints or dna in his house or car. his attorneys walked out of the courthouse disappointed, and promising that there will be an appeal. >> we have had this case for quite some time. you get to know your client intimately, and you put your best foot forward and keep working hard. sometimes you get disappointed by the results. >> i spoke with rochelle battle's mother on the phone after the verdict. she said she is not up to speaking publicly about the case just yet. the sentencing date has not been set yet. kai reed, wbal-tv 11 news. >> last october, dennis tetso was convicted in the murder of his wife, tracy. that was the first murder conviction in which the victim's body was never found. a man is in custody, charged

with killing a baltimore county teen. 37-year-old larry horton was invest -- was arrested in alabama last night, charged with murder in the death of 11-year- old ryan jackson. shelton dutes has an update for us. >> police say the victim and the suspect knew each other, but they are trying to figure out the extent of that relationship and what happened moments before ryan jackson was murdered. on the night before his biehl, ryan jackson's friends are still trying to make sense of his brutal murder. >> for a senseless act like this over stupid b.s., it is just crazy. >> the 18-year-old expected father was reported missing last friday when he did not come home after visiting a friend. >> it is clear at this point in the investigation that these two people did know each other.

there were acquaintances. that were part of a group of people who frequented the rambo court addressed. >> there was no sign of rising, but blood was found all over the baltimore county home. police say two trash bags were found inside. they also found a carpet cleaning machine on the second four. on saturday, jackson's body was discovered in a remote area of of a dirt road in a remote area in baltimore county. they are classifying his death as a murder. >> he was a good man. he was trying to provide for his son that was coming. he tried to better their lives. it is a senseless act of something stupid. >> larry war and fled to alabama but police caught up with him and have charged him with murder in jackson's death. he is supposed to be under supervised probation for unrelated charges in both anne arundel and baltimore counties.

dictator muammar gaddafi had been killed, president obama told the libyan people today, you have won your revolution. the president pledged his full support for democracy in the north african country. he also remembered the american victims who killed in the 1988 plane bombing over scotland. gaddafi is said to have been behind the bombing plot. there were also maryland victims who died in that terrorist attack over lockerbie. today a congressman recognized a family lost a loved one. >> the first thing he said when we met with him is, i am gaddafi, colonel of the revolution, and i am a good person. you all should not have attacked me. i said wait a minute, there is a maryland family whose daughter was killed in the lockerbie terrorist attack, so let's not go down that road. i happen to know the family whose daughter was killed. i am sure there will never be

closure when you lose your loved ones, but i know that when there is an individual who is responsible for the deaths of your loved ones, it probably provide some type of closure, but when you lose a child or family member, you never have closure. >> there were 270 victims in that bombing. tommy inman was one of them, and today his brother said the family is relieved that gaddafi is dead. >> it is justice. there is no question for me, it brings closure. it is hard to believe i have been doing this for 23 years, and to finally get the man that ordered the bombing of pan am 103 eliminated, that is true justice for my brother and all citizens and three countries. >> it may seem like an odd connection, but the dictator's death could also mean lower gas prices in the u.s.. with that topic on, experts say there is a -- with gaddafi gone.

as you may know, maryland officially has a new congressional redistricting map. to date -- today governor martin o'malley signed legislation. it reflects population growth in the d.c. suburbs. republicans dispute that fact, arguing the map was designed to st roscoeue to ou bartlett. republican state senator nancy jacobs says she believes the minority leader position requires her undivided attention. that comes a time when she wants to keep her options open. this is a canny legislator says it is best that she step down as she considers another run for office. currie is accused of taking bribes from shoppers executives

in exchange for legislative favors. defense attorneys are trying to plant seeds of doubt saying he did not know what he was doing. david collins met with a legal analyst to break down the defensive strategy. >> when witnesses if what -- described him as not being smart, not able to pay attention to detail, how does this work in the defense's favre? >> it was done out of carelessness, out of ignorance, essentially. >> some of the state of the top political efficient -- officials are expected to take the stand sometime next week. officials want your help to replace one of maryland's top officials. >> she was homeless and had cancer, but after kimberleys story ran, her entire life changed. >> see what has happened to her since our story aired.

>> maryland officials are asking for the public's help to find a new school superintendent. the state board of education is open feedback from residents will help the ideal leader to replace dr. nancy grasmick. one the ways they are doing this is through online surveys. they can submit the kind of superintendent they would like to see the state higher, and written comments. over half dozen candidates are lined up across the state. >> we don't have many opportunities to choose a new state superintendent. this is a rare one. we have a lot of solid

leadership over time. this gives a chance for maryland residents to tell us what they want in a new one. we have a link on our website, wbaltv.com. maryland is in the running to receive a grant from the u.s. the board of education. the federal dollars would go to improve early childhood education. in order to receive the grant, the state must prove how it will use the money to narrow the school revenues gap which often exists for children and property, to learn english, and those with disabilities. maryland will find out if it will receive the grant by the end of december. >> tonight we have a follow-up to a store that motivated years in an extraordinary way. it was the september story of lawman battling cancer, homelessness, and desperately searching for a safe place to live. here is debra wiener. >> when we first met 38-year-old kimberly right, she was living

on the streets and battling cancer. searching for home after this abandoned building began to crumble. this is where she recovered from the horrible side effects of chemotherapy, without family to rely on, and one of 23,000 others on a public housing waiting list, kimberly had little choice. >> you are either in a shelter, that we were -- the emergency room, or a sitting here sick. life has changed so much for her since it became impossible for her to hold on to her job as housekeeping and caring for the elderly. when we brought her predicament to public housing officials, they issued her this rental vouchers to pay for housing for one year, a major development, but who would accept it, and where? it covered only $340 a month. >> after kimberly story aired, the years immediately called an e-mail us, offering all kinds of support.

polsinelli lead to something kimberly has been searching for for two years, a place to call home. >> hello. -- it ultimately lead to something she has been searching for. >> this is so cool. >> one month after her story first aired, kimberly moved into her new home, a son field, two- bedroom town house in south baltimore. landlord shirley barber contacted the i-team after she saw kimberleys story. she is granting to her at a significantly reduced rate. >> she needed help, and i had something available. cracks in the carter has been helping kimberly for months. she was one of the first visitors. >> you walk in and you could feel the peacefulness. you could feel what she has not

had in her life for so long. right away when i walked in, you just know this is her place, there is no doubt. >> beers came by the truckload. everything kimberly needed came through her new front door quickly. >> it is really not a lot of stuff. we wish we could do more. >> the community support and services for the deaf donated all of this furniture. >> i would just be praying for her good life after all this is over with. >> cookware and appliances, a place to sleep, clothes from a woman fighting the same cancer, and viewer imaginal long brought cleaning supplies. -- megan long brought cleaning supplies. >> so grateful, kimberly prepared food for the volunteers.

>> when was the last time you cooking your own kitchen? >> i would say about 2008. >> with a few more chemotherapy treatments to go, kimberly is hoping she can return to more work of caring to others again soon, giving back. she can see a future now, and you can see that future in kimberleys eyes. >> this feels more than home. it feels like this has been waiting for me for the longest time. >> with a little help from kimberleys france. her voucher covers only a year of red. the property owner told kimberly not to worry, she wants to focus on just getting better and living comfortably. you can take a look at our first report on our website, wbaltv.com. some bad news if you are not a fan of cold weather.

this winter is going to be colder and wetter than average for most of the month. they predict warmer and drier than average conditions from southern california to the gulf coast, but i put my stock in what tom tasselmyer says. >> we are going to show you that outlook and it is not very definitive for our region. some spots are getting a strong signal as to what the winter will be like, but in a la nina winter, it doesn't signal much for us here. we have equal chances of being colder or warmer than normal. there is no real signal out there indicative of what we will experience here in the mid atlantic. does look like a color than normal winter and the warm weather continues for much of this out, including all of texas. the area to the north is also expected to beat wetter than normal. last year we had those blood

problems in the spring. it looks like another very heavy snowpack across the great lakes and ohio valley and northern plains. dry weather is expected in florida, and it looks like for texas, the drought continues through the winter. we will see how things unfold. all it takes is one big storm and it changes your entire perspective of the winter. temperatures today have been trending downward. we were up around 70 about 24 hours ago. just after midnight in the early morning, temperatures were a around 70. the lows for the they are pretty much where we are right now, dropping back down to the '50s. show were still showing up to the north and west of us and the winds are beginning to diminish. 24 mile an hour gusts in easton, 16 in frostburg, 19 in oakland. only 36 that opened in garrett county right now. they may have some wet snow

mixed in with the rain showers tonight and tomorrow. for western maryland, skies should continue to clear east of the mountains and it will be a chilly fall morning. a big storm is pulling away, the last of a cloud the beginning to fall apart. the clouds covering all of the great lakes and the northeast will continue working up into eastern canada. high pressure schedule to get in here with perfect timing for friday, saturday, and all of sunday as well. maybe a little cloud cover late in the weekend out west, but mostly sunny days and clear nights. breezy tomorrow but not quite as windy as today. pda-63 degrees, temperatures a little below normal. a small craft advisory on the bay tomorrow with winds gusting to 20 knots. look at those chilly temperatures, highs in the 40's in western maryland throughout

this trade that would have syndrome harrison to the philadelphia eagles like to save his life. they discovered he has a brain tumor. that nullified the trade. had the lion's not traded harrison, they likely would not have discovered the tumor until it had grown much larger and most likely have threatened his life. he will likely miss the rest of the season, but has an excellent prognosis for returning to full health and to football. week seven of the high school football season, not much room left for error for teams hoping to find a place in that state playoffs. homecoming for the aberdeen eagles. a crossing pattern, good pass protection. java's on the run and gone. that put the eagles at 7-6. third quarter, the falcons' second touchdown pass.
