hello and good morning. i'm lynn berry. today we begin with tragedy in turkey. rebels are digging through rubble this morning after a powerful 7.2 earthquake struck with the country's border are iran on tuesday. at least 217 people are dead, hundreds more injured, and authorities fear that death toll could rise dramatically in the days ahead. emily morgan from itn reports. >> reporter: grimacing and in pain, but alive, this woman was pulled out after eight hours under rubble. rescuers have been looking for residents trapped by concrete. this was a seven-story building in vam, demolished in a split second as locals watched from below, workers continued the

painstaking task of looking and listening. the sounds of cutting machining throughout the evening raised hopes of just who was being freed while everywhere, poignant reminders of life. this woman says she fled the building when she felt the tremor. she hopes her friend who lives here, too, is alive. the lucky ones staggered free from the carnage over the scramble of the ruins trying to find friends and neighbors. this st a region crisscrossed by geological faults, small earthquakes almost a daily occurrence. it doesn't alter the pain about what's happened, but it raises questions about how will the

country's authorities were prepared. as dozens of aftershocks continued to hit, it may take much more to reassure them. the ahead of libya's transitional government has declared the country officially liberated. residents filled the streets in the eastern city of benghazi sunday. president obama urged the fledgeling government to respect human rights and secure weapons as it works towards free and fair elections. meanwhile, as president obama's jobs bill remains load blocked in congress, he's prepared to launch a fresh initiative aimed as helping americans hold on to their homes as well as cash strapped students. brian, good morning to you. >> good morning. later today, we're expecting president obama to reveal a new

battle cry, we can't wait. it's aimed at congressional republicans have have bottled up his jobs bill in the senate. the idea here is the turn up the heat, turn the public against congress and finally get them moving. also today, the president is expected to be in las vegas, the epicenter of the housing bust where he is expected to announce new rules for federally guaranteed mortgages designed to make life easier for people who are upside down and trying to get right side up again. wednesday, the president will be in denver announcing policy changes designed to unburden people struggling with their student loans. out west, the president is going to hold a series of campaign fund razors designed to fatten up his war chest. he will be in nevada and colorado, battleground states he'll need next fall. he's be on friendly deer ground in los angeles and san francisco. >> brian, thank you. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america.

as many as 28 people were thrown off a hay ride in ohio when its allegedly intoxicated driver veered off the road sand saturday night, injuring dozens by causing two trailers to overturn. injuries varied from bruises to broken bones. police arrested the driver on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular assault. a heated exchange between occupy albany demonstrate everies and a couple of hecklers erupted into a brief brawl saturday night. a few punches were thrown before critics said the demonstrators were taken away. one was taken into custody but not arrested. a kiss in a connecticut high school play has stirred up some controversy. a group of parents and students have voiced opposition to the play zana don't, an ironic mu c musical about a high school where being gay is not only

department program to train iraqi police lacks focus could become a financial bottomless pit and may not even be wanted by iraqis. that's all according to a report by the u.s. inspector general for iraq reconstruction which also says the department failed to develop a detailed plan for the training. this comes just days after president obama announced the withdrawal of troops by year's end. meanwhile, secretary of state hillary clinton warnings iran that they should not misread that troop withdrawal decision, saying the u.s. will continue to have a strong presence in the region. argentine president christina fernandez has won a land slide re-election with one of the widest victory margins in the country. and lady liberty is going high tech for her 125e birthday. five torch cams will go online friday, allowing viewers to see various angles of the statue as

well as new york harbor all in realtime. >> and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,808 after pike the 67 points on friday. the s&p climbed 22 points. the nasdaq rose 38. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei jumped 165 points while in hong kong the hang seng zoomed 746. traders start off the week in limbo as european leaders made some progress on the debt crisis sunday but put all final decisions until a second summit wednesday. germany's angela merkel muscled out fran's nicolas sarkozy over using european central bank funds to fight the crisis. instead, europe may turn to china and brazil for help propping up its teeter b bond market. sharp differences remain over lows private holders of greek bonds will have to accept. meanwhile, australia's prime

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, in what up to now has been a seesaw world series, last night, it was the texas rangers turn. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. after scoring 16 runs on saturday, the cards couldn't get anything going last night against the rangers. game four of the world series, ron washington needed a good start, and they got it. but no second-guessing what mike napoli can do. third home run of the postseason. rangers led it, 4-0 with one big
