wig. so far, nothing correct. >> you know what we are? we're a bunch of teases aren't we this morning. >> we'll have some fun. but we begin with breaking news about the weather and i think a lot of folks are considering the october surprise. a storm is now one for the record books. a nor'easter wreaked havoc with two feet of snow reported in massachusetts. the storm is responsible for at least three deaths. so far, states of emergency have been declared in new york, new jersey, connecticut, and massachusetts. at this point, more than 2.5 million homes are without power. nationwide, more than 1,000 flights have been canceled because of weather. we're covering the story up and down the coast. we begin in new york's central parking where authorities are warning people about falling trees. ron allen is there. >> reporter: good morning, lester. it's absolutely amazing how many trees have fallen down in this part of the country, all over the place. especially in the suburbs.

roads closed. power lines knocked down. in central parking 3 inches of snow on the ground. that's a record. not this much snow in october in about 135 years. everywhere, people have been saying how shocked they were to see so much snow in october. yale and columbia's team had an instant classic. they called it the snow bowl. plowed during time-outs so the field wouldn't disappear. things were weird and wintry everywhere, with ghosts and goblins covered in snow and people stocked up on shovels and salt along with candy and things for trick-or-treater. >> my daughter is not going to be happy. halloween, i don't think i ever experienced one honestly. >> a mad rush of people -- we sell shovels, it's amazing how many we sell. >> reporter: the storm stretched from maine to maryland and left a trail of destruction. the unusual combination of

heavy, wet snow, falling on still leafy trees brought countless limbs and power lines down. >> it snapped again. i'm worried about the powerline. >> reporter: this one narrowly escaped the falling tree that fell on her car. tree fell on you while you were moving. >> correct. >> reporter: and you got out by crawling through the passenger door? >> yeah. >> reporter: so much snow it sparked this passionate debate. >> much too early. i'm not ready. >> actually, i love it i'm ready for it. >> reporter: at least 2 million homes without power in pennsylvania, new york, new jersey, and connecticut. passengers waited for up to six hours for flights from new york airport, and hundreds canceled. a jetblue flight from florida to newark, diverted to bradley airport in connecticut where it was grounded for seven hours with no food, water, or bathroom available. >> almost came to fistacuffs on

the plane. >> jetblue apologized, citing weather and infrastructure issues. first time visitors to new york from texas had enough. >> would you ready be in 80-degree weather? >> i think so. >> reporter:downtown in the financial district. protesters decided to stay and occupy wall street, got their first real taste of what may be one of their toughest challenges. winter. >> i don't know if i will be able to stay for the entire winter, but i know that there are people that most definitely will. >> reporter: police and protesters will battle that out for weeks and months to come. here today, people will be digging out. two feet of snow on the grounds in parts of western massachusetts. cold out here, 35 degrees right now. temperatures up to the mid 40s and that's bad news for people who don't have heat or power. some of the utility companies

say it could be tuesday or wednesday, before the lights back on in some places. lester. >> ronally len in central parking thank you. states of emergency declared in several states. mike side nell west milford, new jersey. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. in the hills of passaic county, 45 minutes from midtown and where you are sitting at 30 rock. we've had 12 to 19 inches of snow. highest totals in the state of new jersey. take a look back yesterday to heavy snow coming down. as much as an inch of hour this morning, you can see how it's stuck to the trees and still on the trees. a lot of weight and a lot of stress and it won't take much more for more limbs to come down. speaking of that, this big limb came down. 8 to 10 inches of diameter. took down two big transmissions lines. some customers will be without electricity until wednesday so

it will be a couple of cold nights for people without heat. lester. >> mike seidel, thanks very much. and now here is jenna. pennsylvania was one of the first states hit with the storm and that's where jim cantore is this morning. jim, you warned us yesterday this would be one of the big ones. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. surprising the scope of this thing. snowing from washington, d.c. all the way up to boston. something i have never seen in the month of october and who would have thunk it, jenna. pulling out a snow shovel before you poult a rake. most of the leaves still on the trees, therein lies the problem. huge snowflakes and after that, it was tree limbs coming down on powerlines and thousands losing power. half a million plus at the height of the storm. this morning, 300,000. penndot can't remove the trees when there are power lines involved. they have to wait for utility

crews, and that, my friend, will be a while before we get all of that cleaned up across the keystone state. back to you. >> jim cantore, thank you. this is truly an historic storm. one that has given new york city its snowiest october since 1869. janice huff with more on this holiday surprise. >> it's more than just a surprise and a big trick from mother nature. not only snowfall totals impressive and record breaking. they were record shattering. it doesn't take much, since it's so early. anywhere from 9 inches in northern virginia to more than 2 feet of snow on the ground in plainfield, massachusetts. most areas saw a foot or more up the coast. winter storm warnings and advisories in effect for maine and most of new hampshire. it is snowing there. the storm is winding up, moving offshore. we'll continue to see more snow piling up, and leaves on the trees coming down still.

the trees, because of the weight of the snow, seeing extreme power outages in many loencatio. >> before the rakes come out, we've had snow shovels out. two feet in new england. >> and even in new jersey, 8, 9 inches. so close. >> unbelievable. hopefully it doesn't portend a long winter. melissa francis at the news desk with more. we begin with the deadliest attack against the u.s.-led coalition in the afghan capital since the war began. we are live in kabul with the latest. good morning, atia. >> a very tragic day for the  international community here in afghanist afghanistan. yesterday, in kabul, a car bomb, possibly laced with over 1,500 pounds of explosives, targeted a nato convoy, killing 12 americans, a canadian, both civilians and service members.

just oneweekafter an american diver was killed by a shark tack in australia there is news of a new attack off the california coast. we have an exclusive interview with the girlfriend's mother and girlfriend in a moment. first, here is miguing m miguel. >> reporter: friendses helped pull eric tarantino out of the water. his board had a 19-inch gash. air lifted to a hospital in stable condition. >> i think he's going to be okay. we got him to the beach. he was still there. and we stopped the bleeding immediately. >> he had significant injuries, but, fortunately, didn't hit any major vessels in the neck, where one of the bite wounds was, and also bite wounds in his right

arm. >> reporter: the surfer had been in the water only minutes before the attack. witnesses say he spotted the shark, but couldn't get out of water fast enough. throw though encounters like this are rare, at this very same beach, tarantino's friend and fellow surfer was attacked by a great white. >> i started sweating. >> reporter: this weekend's attack is the latest in a series of dangerous or deadly great white encounters. the hunt is on for a great white in australia after three recent attacks. in oregon, this surfer far role escaped a great white encounter last week. he may have been inches from losing his life. experts say beachgoers are more likely to drown than be attacked. >> no doubt, in the wrong place at the wrong time, a tragedy like that could occur. the reality is very few shark

attacks every season, every summer. >> reporter: statistics may be on the side of surfers, but today in marina, california, beachgoers warned to stay out of water. miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. eric tarantino's mother and girlfriend join us from california. good morning. thank you for being with us. >> good morning. >> hi. >> hi. let's start with you, arlene. how is eric this morning? >> we actually haven't talked to him this morning. but he was feeling very thankful last night. i think that's the main thing that i notice, is how thankful he is that he's -- he's okay. >> i'm sure. krista, let me ask you this. from what i understand, eric is an avid surfer, been surfing every morning in that area for the last five years. any reason to worry about that particular place off the california coast there?

>> nothing really keeps eric out of the water. so he -- every surfer is aware that sharks are out there, but he never -- you never really can expect anything like that to happen. you never can see it coming, and just last week, he was in -- he was in southwestern france catching beautiful waves and now one week later, he's here. so -- >> arlene, let me ask you this. in reading about this, i was shocked about how he described the strength of this shark, and i understand he knows what to do if there should ever be an accident like this. but can you tell me how he described how strong the shark actually was? >> he actually said it felt like a car or truck pulling him along. it -- it had his arm -- his arm in its mouth. and it was pulling him under the water, and he said it felt like -- it felt like a truck.

he was so surprised at how strong it was. he was incredibly amazed. and he said he just started kicking it,çó but he felt like was kicking a steel wall, and he is so glad it let go. he doesn't know if it had to do with him kicking it or not. but he was incredibly amazed. he knows that -- >> go ahead. >> go ahead. >> we hear these stories about how something like this happens, i heard you're supposed to punch a shark. you don't think in a moment like that someone would have the wherewithal to actually do that. krista, i guess it was very familiar with the water. surfing, with what to do if an accident like this should occur? >> i don't -- i think that he -- he just did what he could to get away, and i know -- i think he's thinking i have to get away from this shark, and he did whatever he could to get away and he was fortunate enough to -- that it

winter. >> first nor'easter that brought high winds, heavy rain and a record amount of snow. the weather channel's mike seidel in west milford, new jersey, to tell us more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, lester. people coming by yesterday morning saying really? are you serious? unbelievable. over two feet of snow in the berkshires in massachusetts. here in milford, 45 minutes from 30 rock, up to 19 inches of snow. look how it's sticking to the trees, that's the big issue. heavy wet snow with temperatures right around freezing. we could get more branches coming down. thousands of tree limbs drop across the entire path of the storm. here is one of them. what happens, they take out these power lines. at one point, nearly 3 million without power. in new jersey, half a million customers without power. the governor lost his power and some of the roads are still closed because of blocked trees. good weather ahead, lester, but

cold nights for those without heat. back to you. >> unbelievable. massachusetts declared a state of emergency with one town receiving almost two feet of snow. dan housely from whdh in worcester, massachusetts, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. here in worcester, about a foot of snow. a great mid winter scene, but here in october, we're talking more trick than treat. this was a record in worcester, the record about 7 1/2 inches. we got 12 inches here. parts of the state that had 20 inches or more. look at the piles we have here. we don't want this at this time. one of the reasons are, if you look off in the distance, you see green. trees still have leaves on them. haven't turned colors nor the beautiful leaf peeping that's supposed to happen. some leaves got covered with the snow, and you heard from mike seidel you heard how big of a problem that was. that was a problem with this state too.

all of the tree limbs came down. we have half a million people without power here as well. we're hoping that rising temperatures and the sun help with that. >> we all gasped when we saw that picture. remarkable. thanks for that report. if you like september, you will love october? if you like october, you love november? >> i'm not sure. it doesn't necessarily mean november will be worse or even december. it will be winter of just about everything just around the northeast and an example of that yesterday with the big winter storm that we would typically see more in january or february. from northern virginia, portions of west virginia, all the way up to new england, anywhere from 9 inches of snow in skyland, to more than 2 feet in western massachusetts. still over portions of maine today. that will be moving out tonight. all that snow has to melt eventually too. we'll see temperatures climb and it will start melting, may >> good morning.
