the owners are vowing to open bigger and better. crews were called to the tavern this morning to find the building engulfed in flames. >> it was a heartbreaking scene for the dozens of the employees and a longtime patrons of this historic tavern. lowell melser joins us live in mount washington tonight. >> yes, as we told you at 5:00, it still remains an active scene out here on mount washington, more than 13 hours after this fire. you can see that it is still smoldering. there is one firetruck on the scene that continues to put out hotspots. where you see that smoke is where we saw the worst flames earlier today. i spoke with one of the owners here at the tavern, and he says that because -- despite the fact the restaurant is an entire loss, they will rebuild. >> it is a worse nightmare. i live about half a mile away, and i drove here as fast as i could. it was a blur.

my heart was racing, and i did not know what to expect, and i found the worst. >> he stands in front of the charge out shell of his pride and joy. out shell.red >> we still want to take care of our employees, and to our customers, to some of them, this is like a second home. getting involved with their families. it is a devastating thing on many levels. >> a crowd of shellshocked patrons and area business owners came to take a look, as well. >> the tavern is a landmark in the area, and they bring a lot of business to the village. i hope they can reopen soon and that it is not too much of a hassle to build the way it was. >> one woman was beside herself. >> it is hard to look.

it is heartbreaking. but we have got a strong grip here, and in the meantime, our thoughts and prayers go out to our staff. >> firefighters got called, and quickly had gone to two alarms. the flames were so high that it was safer to attack it from the outside. >> this was due to be unsafe conditions, it was necessary for us to proceed to exterior operations. >> the fire was brought under control by 9:30, and crews spent the rest of the afternoon wedding down hot spot. the owners are keeping their resolve. >> we are absolutely going to rebuild. we will come back stronger than ever. >> thankfully, there were no injuries or deaths associated with this fire. fire investigators say they are continuing to investigate the cause and are trying to figure what exactly where the fire started. i am told it could take anywhere from a couple of days to a

couple of weeks. one final note. i spoke to a number of business owners, and they say if folks are thinking of coming to washington to still do so because they have a number of businesses that are still open. lowell melser, wbal 11 news. >> and now, a story we first brought to you as breaking news on wbaltv.com. one man has been arrested after the violent attack on a 14-year- old girl, but others are still on the loose. >> the man arrested, the 22- year-old, had a bail review today. we have learned that he was on probation and was wearing a gps monitoring device at the time of the attack. police will not comment just yet as the investigation continues as to what happened parked behind these houses in west baltimore. investigators have arrested the

man, charging him with rape and other sex offenses, false imprisonment, and handgun violations. he and four others are accused of a broad assault. she was allegedly attacked october 23. according to a charging document, a van, similar to this one, was on the street. the teenager told investigators she was in an unfamiliar area and was lost. she met an unknown black male who offered her a ride. he also said he had a gun. when she went to the van, she saw two other males inside, and then two others got into the van. she was brutally assaulted and suffered injuries. monday, crosby appeared before a judge in central booking. this -- his bail was denied. we have learned he was just released from prison in september after a sentence

involving a gun. he was wearing a gps device to monitor his movement at the time of the attack. he was under the supervision of parole. a spokesman said he was compliant and had no violations. >> according to the department of public safety, crosby was placed on that monitoring device for 60 days. it is a passive gps system, and baltimore city police want to take a mackenzie where he had been. reporting live, barry simms, wbal tv 11 news. >> senator ulysses currie did not take the stand in the case. we have the latest with david. >> before testimony officially rested in this case, federal prosecutors raised questions about another company that paid

him as a consultant, and an fbi special agent also shed new light on his incomplete financial disclosure statements. prosecutors called a special agent to the witness stand. he was the case agent in charge of the currie investigation and had talked with currie the morning when they issued a search warrant. they asked the senator why he did report and that he was a paid consultant for shoppers. it was testified that he initially blamed his wife, saying she reviewed the forms, and then he said he reviewed them for accuracy and then sign them because it was his responsibility. the testimony is conflicting. his wife says cents his election, she has built out but two of his disclosure forms and

that he did not check the work because "he trusted me." it is said that the senator got money from one company as a consultant. none of the workers said they knew the senator was an employee, nor did they know why he was getting paid. the owner who wrote the checks passed away a few years ago. there was lobbying for giving tax breaks, for hiring those on welfare rolls. they were paid to screen employees to see if they were qualified. the information came before the senator's committee. in one report, in detail but the senator advised them. when the public assistance rolls ed rendell, so did that company's profits. the senator introduced legislation to expand the program to include those on disability. the judge gave the jury of

tomorrow, so he and the attorneys can hammer out jury instructions. the senator, through his attorney, also asked to be excused tomorrow. opening statements begin wednesday. reporting live, david collins, wbal tv 11 news. >> thanks, david. now, to a follow-up on a story we told you about last week, students that were to have a temporary home in a cruise ship. now, they will have to wait a bit longer. >> the cruise ship is docked in downtown st. mary's. it is now officially the new dorm for over 200 st. mary's college students. 240 students from st. mary's college will call the cruise ship, through the semester. their old dorms have to be closed because of mold. >> it simply adds another category, housing the st. mary's college.

jayne miller. >> now, your insta-weather plus forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> finishing up the month of october with cool weather. so far for trick-or-treaters, so far so good. to our west near hagerstown and back into the mountains, in a more substantial amount of rain coming out of virginia. this is likely to move past us much later tonight. it looks pretty good for trick- or-treaters through the early evening. we show that there are some zeros in the precipitation column. temperatures remain a little below normal. the typical high for the halloween day, 62 degrees. 56 at the airport, 58 downtown. the warmest was in the 1940's. the coldest one was in 1966. around the region right now, upper 40's to low 50's.

these are actually pretty good temperatures. 50 and rising sun, 54 in centreville. it is 37 in oakland at this hour, and it is a couple of degrees warmer. mas the cladding for the overnight, the best chance for showers after midnight, probably the better chance over on the eastern shore, and the weather disturbance coming across the ohio river valley, another one trying to come up the coast. this produced a range chance tonight and tomorrow morning. but by midday, most of this activity should be gone. the large area of high pressure will be building in. morning showers possible, but most of the day sunday, with highs 54 to 59. tomorrow, the wins the occasional gusting to 15 knots, the wind direction out of the north. in western maryland, they had some snow, but they will get some sunshine, the highs of 49

to 54. the chance of shower on the eastern shore. a light sprinkle in the morning and then sunshine in the afternoon, lots of sunshine on wednesday. by wednesday, it will be sunny at ocean city, as well. a lot of people going up for the pittsburgh game. sunday evening. a 30% chance of a rain shower, game time temperatures ranging from 47 to 53. that is only a slight chance. we will have to see how that develops as the ric mimms on, but at least now, temperatures will be above freezing in western pennsylvania this weekend. 59 with lots of sunshine wednesday, into the low 60 crossed bids thursday, as a slight risk of a sprinkle thursday. do not forget, the clocks go back one hour on sunday morning.
