back now with more of "today" on this friday morning. it's the 4th day of november, 2011. we've got a great group of people outside. it's 50 degrees but there's a wind and so we're all a little bit chilly but we're staying warm by jumping up and down and waving to people. i'm ann curry along with al roker this morning. matt has already started winging his way -- >> wow. >> for the rest of us it's tgif but for him it's the beginning of a whole new week as he gets ready for "where in the world." in the meantime if you can believe it, you guys, it's already time to start thinking about holidays and christmas

shopping. coming up we'll be telling you the easy way out. the best place to go online for all kinds of things so that you can sort of do your shopping from your home. >> the comfort of your home. >> yes. >> or office, in case your boss isn't looking. and in "today's real estate" our good buddy barbara corcoran will be here to give us some of the great values out there, everywhere from wallia, wallia washington to wanesville, ohio and everywhere in between. and some really great fall fashions. we'll show you how to keep up with the latest trends by having the right accessories. i can see you in that hat. >> which one, the purple one i like. the red one? oh. you wear hats very well. let's get to the news. natalie morales is out but we have tamron filling in for her. >> good morning, everyone. for the first time since july, the nation's unemployment rate is down a notch. the labor department says the jobless rate slipped from 9.1% to an even 9.0% in october.
9:02 am
employers added a modest 80,000 jobs and hourly earnings were up. gop presidential hopeful herman cain is fighting back, comparing the sexual harassment accusations against him to the allegations leveled against supreme court justice clarence thomas back in the '90s. in an interview with justice thomas's wife, cain said he's fighting the culture of washington, d.c., where he's being treated as a guilty person instead of proving that he's innocent. now a new internet video surfaced from cain supporters calling the accusations against the candidate a, quote, high-tech lynching. after six weeks of riveting testimony, the manslaughter trial of michael jackson's doctor goes to the jury today. nbc's jeff rossen is in los angeles with the latest. good morning, jeff. >> reporter: hey, tamron, good morning to you. yeah, we are officially on verdict watch here in los angeles on this trial that has stretched six weeks already, and the speculation is already starting. will they come back with a quick verdict today, in time to save their weekend? remember, they have been away from their jobs for quite a long time.
9:03 am
or will they spend a lot of time on this case and bring it into next week, week number seven. conrad murray, enjoying what could be his final days of freedom. >> are you looking forward to putting this all behind you? >> i can't wait, buddy. >> reporter: here, taking a romantic walk on the beach with his girlfriend, nicole alvarez. you know her as witness number 23, who said this on the stand. >> as a professional actress, my daily duties consist of maintaining my instrument. as an actor, your instrument is yourself. >> reporter: she and murray playing with their son on the beach this week, and at the playground. walking down the street chatting on his cell phone. all as prosecutors prepare closing arguments. and within two minutes of starting thursday, brought the case back to michael jackson's kids. >> conrad murray left prince, paris and blanket without a father. they do not have a father because of the actions of conrad
9:04 am
murray. >> reporter: the crux of the prosecution's case, how could any doctor set up a propofol drip inside someone's house. >> this was a pharmaceutical experiment in a bedroom. this has never been seen before. >> reporter: the defense blames michael jackson for his own death, and claims conrad murray is the victim of a sloppy investigation and an aggressive d.a.'s office. in court the prosecutor hit back. >> if allowed more time to argue, i'm certain they would figure out a way to blame it on michael's son, prince. >> reporter: murray's lawyers want the jury to focus on the pop star himself. who was he really, not the hard-working crowd pleaser, they say, but instead a desperate, o conniving addict, using dr. murray to get drugs. >> they want you to convict dr. murray for the actions of michael jackson. they just don't want to tell you that. >> reporter: murray chose not to testify. his lawyer did the talking thursday. >> somebody has got to just say
9:05 am
it. if it were anybody else but michael jackson, anybody else, would this doctor be here today? >> reporter: the stakes are high. a six-week trial, 49 witnesses, more than 330 pieces of evidence. now all of it in the hands of seven men and five women. >> this is not a reality show. it's reality. and the decisions you make isn't making good tv, it's how it affects real human beings and people that love him. so i hope that you do the right thing and find dr. murray not guilty. >> reporter: keep in mind conrad murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter, not murder, so the jury is not deciding whether or not conrad murray killed michael jackson, but rather was he criminally negligent leading to michael's death. so, tamron, the jury is back here in a couple of hours and we could get a verdict as early as
9:06 am
today. >> all right, jeff rossen, thank you very much. this morning teen superstar justin bieber responded to the paternity suit that's being filed against him. he talked about it earlier on "today." >> it just isn't true and i know that i'm going to be a target, but i'm never going to be a victim. you know, i think it's crazy because every night after the show, i'm gone right from the stage right to my car, so it's crazy that some people want to make up such false allegations. but to set the record straight, none of it is true. >> you can catch justin on our show again for a full concert the wednesday before thanksgiving, on november 23rd, live right on the plaza. a reluctant elephant finally decided it was time to greet the world. he was born at a british zoo after his mother's two-year pregnancy. that's about two months longer than normal. even with that extra little time, he's still tips the scales at just 230 pounds, and that is small for a baby elephant boy. it is six past the hour.
9:07 am
now back to al with a check of the weather. >> okay, thanks so much, tam run. as we look to see what's happening out there, we've got the new york city marathon here, the ing marathon, this sunday, 9:00 a.m. 47, light winds. by 3:00, 56. it's going to be sunny the whole time, a perfect day for a run. our best wishes to all the runners out there, over 47,000 of them. we've got another system coming into the west causing a mess from san francisco down to san diego. we're look at a half an inch to quarter inch of heavy snows in the intermountain regions into the nowhere rockies and looking at a second system this weekend hat's going to brin >> good morning, everyone. as we go through the day today, the cloud cover out there now will be decreasing. it will turn breezy and cool this afternoon with a high near 58.
9:08 am
time now for "today's real estate." what you can get for under $350,000. barbara corcoran is here with some stunning homes that are on the market that you could gobble up right now. barbara, good to see you. >> good morning, al. >> let's get started. we're going to head to omaha, nebraska. we've got a fantastic two bedroom, two and a half bath town home with some great views. >> omaha means those going against the wind, the name of the native american tribe that originally lived here. get a look at this townhouse. a little wacky, i think. kind of looks like a 2001 space odyssey type thing going on on the front side, but inside, the entryway has glossy wood floors, contemporary staircase. nothing wrong with that house. very modern, if that's your kind of thing. the kitchen is thoroughly modern
9:09 am
as well with granite kourpts and a snazzy breakfast bar. the living room is turquoise. this is a courageous homeowner with a full wall of windows and glass doors to the balcony. gorgeous room but i think the color may get in the way. take a look at the crazy light fixture. oh, we missed it there. of the master bedroom has a marble fireplace that i thought it was a tv when i looked at it. and what's not to like about the balcony with views of the missouri river and a stunning pedestrian walkway. bridges don't usually look that pretty. that's not a bad backyard. >> let's stay in the midwest. we'll head to st. louis. a four-bedroom home with five fireplaces at $329,000. >> you get a lot for this $329,000. this is a victorian home that looks small on the inside but don't be fooled by that. it's in an historic district downtown and surrounded by 375 other homes that have been fully renovated. the people love their neighborhood.
9:10 am
the townhouse space is at lafayette square park where they have outdoor concerts. what's wrong with that kitchen? it's got the original brick fireplace. i'm so happy they didn't rip that thing out. and that is the first, as you mentioned earlier, the first of five fireplaces in the house. the blue living room has 12-food ceilings, beautiful touch. i think they did a great job on that. another fireplace, and oversized windows. there's even a heart room. i love a hearth room. glass doors lead to the wood deck out back. the dining room to my eye, which you'll see in just a moment here, is a little too formal. i mean it just doesn't feel like people really live there to be comfortable, but that big wall of bookcases there, i don't get it, they need a book. look at all those bookcases. there's a dramatic staircase in the main entry hall that has double windows on the top of the stairs. you can't see that from the shot so it's nice and lit, which is unusual with the stairway. that house, remember, is only $329,000. >> all right, we've got an unusual one.
9:11 am
we're going to dillsburg, pennsylvania. it's a home with a huge yard. four bedrooms and it comes with its own tractor. >> and you know what's even better than the tractor, it's the name of the street. it's called spend a bus drive. who named it that? and on top of that the up to is named after the pickle, really, i swear. on new year's eve, the town drops a giant pickle in the middle of the town to celebrate the new year. okay, each to their own. this four-bedroom brick house you can tell needs a tractor there because the lawn is so big. the kitchen has blond wood cabinets. you'll see how pretty that is. beautiful kitchen. a wide, long kitchen with granite counters and a roomy breakfast bar. the finished basement has a bar that's a little too gray when you see it downstairs, but at least it has a full bath. there it is there. there's a good shot of it. look at all those windows. don't get turned off by the gray. that's a spare room, remember. put the kids down there. upstairs is a light-filled bonus room that could be used as an office. i could make a lot of uses of
9:12 am
that. the oversized family room has wood floors, a beautiful fireplace and big ole doors back to the wood deck. and that wood deck looks out on a very green yard chock full of mature trees. now let's go out west to walla walla, washington. a four-bedroom home with great curb appeal for $349,000. >> the locals say a town so nice they named it twice. it's in the blue mountains, it has 300 days of sunshine a year. this house on the outside looks so dressed up like you're going to have a power. it just has that nice polished look and it's as impressive on the instead. look at the gleaming wood floors and leaded glass doors. you have a peek of the sunny office off on the right side with double windows right there. the great open room has entertainment all over the place. and plus a fireplace. the open kitchen has wood cabinets, granite counters and a back tile splash. out back it's nice. the backyard, nothing to write
9:13 am
home about with a green lawn but at least it has some plantings and a covered patio. and a three-bedroom home in waynesville, ohio, where you get acres of land. >> waynesville was founded way back in 1897. this is a contemporary all-brick house and it has six steep peak roofs. great for getting rid of the snow in the winter months. this is a two-story great room that's the heart of the whole house with double height windows and a working fireplace. pretty room. i love those windows on the left wall. the white cabinets in the kitchen are trimmed in a black edge. kind of weird, i don't think it works and also has crazy-looking tile back splash. i don't quite get that but each to their own. the screening room downstairs is nice enough to keep a roaming husband home on the ranch. why go outside if he's got that. and the multi-level partially covered wood deck out back i think is so peaceful and beautifully done. not too big, not too small,
9:14 am

>> your show is so well done and really people have responded. what was it that made you decide to move into this area. you know, looking at these brave men and women who sacrificed so much for hur country? >> this is a show that i wanted to do for a very long time because we're talking about an entire generation of young men and women who have been deployed on multiple tours of duty. so many of them are coming back with devastating levels of posttraumatic stress disorder. we've all heard about it and seen reports about it but i personally had never seen what ptsd looked like or felt like until i was invited into the lives of these incredible veterans who really exposed to me their darkest demons. what i saw there was so incredible and devastating, but i also saw when i accompanied them to this incredible wellness retreat them call their spirits back in the most profound way and it really gave me hope that there are alternatives. and there is hope for these veterans who are dealing with

this kind of trauma. >> and this is not short term. you follow peter, who returned from the gulf war eight years ago and his wife, andrea. how is ptsd affecting their lives? what's it doing to them? >> well, peter is constantly on alert. he's paranoid. he can't even go to his son's baseball practice without standing by the gate because he's just so on edge. it has been wreaking havoc on his entire family for a very long time. >> what about him? >> that's peter. and when you watch him, this is literally what he's like every single day. our cameras were far away. he can't -- when he's in a restaurant, he has to sit by the door. and so he and his wife are on their last resort, and they went to this wellness retreat. and what was wild, al, is that they do things like yoga and meditation. you think how can something like that help these guys who have this deeply engrained trauma. but what happened there was incredible. i had never seen anything like it. >> men and women both have trouble sometimes opening up,

but veterans have a lot of trouble with this, with opening up and talking about what is bothering them. did this retreat, did that help them? >> well, it helped enormously, to be in the company of other soldiers who are going through the same thing. there was a world war ii veteran, vietnam and korea veterans. this retreat invited the spouses as well, because the collateral damage from ptsd on families is enormous. and it was just -- al, it was an incredible experience. and we are facing a crisis epidemic proportion, 18 veterans commit suicide a day and there have been more suicides of u.s. soldiers on american soil that have been killed in iraq and afghanistan combined. as soldiers continue to return home, we're talking about something that is only going to get a lot bigger and more severe. >> and for those soldiers who can't get to, say, a retreat like angel fire, what are the other resources for these folks? >> unfortunately, there are very few. soldiers these days are so heavily medicated. my hope is that people will watch this and see what they're doing at this retreat and think

about implementing them in their own communities, because it's something that's very simple, but it does a tremendous service. >> lisa ling, thank you so much for doing this, we really appreciate it. you can catch the special veterans episode of "our america with lisa ling" this sunday night at 10:00 eastern and pacific on own, the oprah winfrey network. great to see you. >> thanks, al. up next, olympic gold medalist sarah hughes taking a spin on the rock center rink. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
