good morning. raising cain, the controversy surrounding herman cain heats up as the lawyer for one of his accusers speaks out. why he says that cain is being untruthful about his past behavior. in the jury's hands after an emotional and high profile trial, the fate of kuhn rcan ra murray is now in the hands of a jury. and william and kate plus one? the pregnancy rumors are spreading around the royal couple and many are wondering if the duchess of cambridge is carrying the future heir to the throne. today is saturday, november 5th,

throne. today is saturday, november 5th, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome back to "today" on a saturday. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolf filling in for amy. >> we have lots to get to today. starting with gop candidate herman cain. the restaurant association acknowledged friday that a formal complaint was filed when he was ceo of the organization back in 1999. that happened as cain was making a 2000 presidential bid when he eventually had to drop. more on that just ahead. also, a disturbing story out of texas, a warning, this video is difficult to watch. it's a 15-year-old girl getting beaten by a bully at her own school as other kids stood by. the young victim now needs surgery for her injury.
7:02 am
we're going to talk to her about the ordeal when she and her mother join us exclusively. >> seems like there's always someone there to shoot it, but no one there to hut help. rumors are flying in the uk that the duchess of cambridge could be expecting. she's been seen making some interesting choices, let's put it that way, when it comes to food and drink. we're going to take a closer look at the buzz. people are watching this poor young lady at every -- >> at every angle. >> maybe she just wasn't thirsty. >> perhaps. a little later on, we're going to have an inside look at an institution both here in nbc and in american pop culture. saturday night live. every weekend, we're putting together our show. guess what? the folks across the street at snl are doing the same thing, plugging away at theirs behind the scenes. i got a first look behind the scenes. finding out about everything that goes into the show that's made us laugh for more than 35
7:03 am
years. you know, i love what i do for a living. but if there was no such thing as "today" show, that's my dream job. >> they come in and have very long days. >> they go through those things over and over and over again. >> have you done to a show? >> i was at a rehearsal a million years ago. i'll have to get back there. we're going to start this morning with the controversy very surrounding presidential candidate herman cain and new information we're learning about those sexual harassment allegations against him. mike viqueira is at the white house. >> reporter: the lawyer for one of herman cain's accusers says herman cain knows very well the specific allegations against him and there was more than one incident. with that accuser now saying that she and her husband want to put this behind her, she's not stepping forward publicly. the question comes, can the cain campaign survive? early friday, herman cain got a reducing in washington.
7:04 am
>> you know, i've been in washington all week and i've attracted a little bit of attention. >> but by late in the day, the lawyer for one of cain's accuser says he believes there's little doubt of gop front-runner's guilt. >> the fact that there are multiple complaints tells me that it's more likely than not that there was some sexual ra massment activity by this man at that time. >> that came as the national restaurant association was which cain ran and where the incidents allegedly took place. acknowledged in a statement that a complaint of sexual harassment was, in fact, filed in 1999 against the campaign. the association and mr. bennet's clients subsequently entered into an agreement to resolve the matter without any admission of liability. sweeney says the nra will wave a cause barring the campaign from speaking out in person. >> mr. cain knows the specific
7:05 am
incidents that were alleged. my client filed a written complaint in 1999 against him specifically and it had very specific incidents in it. if he chooses to not remember or not acknowledge those, that's his issue. >> don't even bother asking me all of these other questions. >> cain's accounts of the incident have varied since the story broke sunday night. by thursday, he issued a flat denial. >> shawn, this is absolutely fabrication, man. i don't know what else to say. how many more ways can i say? this stuff is totally fabricated. >> there is evidence that cain could survive politically. his campaign says it has raised $1.6 million in cash this week alone, four times the monthly average. in a statement, the cain campaign sought to turn the page, saying in part we look forward to focusing our attention on the real issues impacting this country, like fixing this broken economy and putting americans back to work through our 9-9-9 plan.
7:06 am
and a new poll taken at the controversy tests show cain tied with mitt romney amid the top of the field. and that poll shows 70% of voters say this scandal doesn't matter to them when they're trying to decide who to vote for in a republican primary the. >> once again, here is lester. >> more insight into the cain controversy, with us is richard wolf. >> good morning, lester. >> we've seen these sorts of things play off with politicians in the past. eventually they crash and burn. you heard the poll numbers there. that doesn't seem to be the case with cain. is that so much a judgment on him as it is the media and how we're covering this? >> it's a little bit of both, but this is a different candidate, a different environment. you have to understand who he appeals to, why his numbers are so high in the republican party. he has an ultra conservative
7:07 am
base who actually hate the media even more than the general population. we don't have a particularly good standing with the rest of the population, either. but with this particular block, the more he's attacked or perceived to be attacked by the media, the more he faces the persist end questions about his behavior, the more popular he gets. the more fund-raising he can do. that's important in the early states like iowa or south carolina. that's great for him. with a general population, though, with other voters, the more moderate centrist republicans who will be the key to winning the nomination in the bigger states, florida, california, that's where he's going to see erosion. >> right. every potential candidacy starts with the conversation, are there any skeletons in the closet? nbc has learned at the time of a settlement between the national restaurant association and cain's accuser, he was dropping his first presidential candidacy. it was a fledgeling candidacy, just $20,000 in the bank. but could there be a tipping point in this candidacy with these act ewe sagsz?
7:08 am
>> we >> the trouble for him is the problem with this dribbling out, the more people, the more first hand accounts that come out, the less he can talk about jobs or his 9-9-9 plan which has been very effective in terms of consistency of messaging. that means his actual overall numbers against the president, if he were to get the nomination, have stood up pretty well. when those start to decline because he's not hitting the major subjects voters know about, that's when you'll see places like california saying maybe he's not the giet to go head to head with the candidate and that's when the erosion comes through. but there's a time delay. >> what no one is talking about is this is a guy that has bucked all the odds here as the tied front-runner. there's perry and romney. everyone speaks about them as being the eventual front-runners in all of this, but yet, here contain continues to stand at the front of the pack.
7:09 am
what does that say about this race in its entirety? >> i think what it says is about the volatility and the surprises that this electorate has given us, not just in this cycle, but in 2010 and 2008. for a long, long time, people did not want to accept that someone named barack obama could ever win the nomination, never mind the presidency. and whatever the differences are, and they are enormous, you have an electricat using for something new, something that doesn't sound like a typical politician. and him toughing this out may reinforce the idea that he's not your average politician. >> richard wolf, thanks for coming on this morning. >> thanks, lester. >> lester, thank you. now to the economy. new job numbers show unemployment dropped just a tick to 9% last month. joining us with more insight into what this means is nbc's steve liesman. good morning. >> good morning. >> so the number is 80,000 jobs. it's up a little bit in the last couple of months, but are you
7:10 am
surprised by that number? >> no. it was around what was expected. they were looking for 100,000, most of the economists on wall street. they got 80. the important thing about this number is it's tepid job growth, not enough to bring down the unemployment rate. but the one good sign, one of the good signs inside the report was they went back and revised upward august and september. they added an additional 102,000 jobs. punish plus, the private sector is not doing too badly. we created about the 200,000 private jobs in september. one of the real places where we're losing jobs is government jobs as state and local government lay off workers. >> one, the long-term unemployment numbers fell. two, on the flip side, more people reported leaving their jobs. >> leaving their jobs is a counter intuitive indicator. people hang on to their jobs,
7:11 am
they will not leave their jobs voluntarily. we had an uptick that some see as a good sign that people are more confident in the job market. the long-term unemployed, unemployed for 27 weeks or longer, it may be the single most important number in this economy right now. >> so big pictures. are any of these numbers enough to give us light at the end of all this? >> let's take a step back. at the end of august and into the september, these numbers and the revisions tell us there's no recession. big picture, though, as job growth still remains very weak. has to be in the 100 to 150,000 range in order to meaningfully bring down the unemployment range. >> we'll have to wait and see on that. steve liesman, thank you, as always. we're going to turn to the
