♪ how you like me now, how you like me now ♪ we're back with more of "today" on this monday morning, doing a little race here on the beach in namibia, pelican point. savannah has been practicing apparently. this is another very, very popular way toee the desert areas and the shoreline areas around here. i have to figure out how to turn this off. i hope that's right, that little button. there we go. anyway, the key they're saying, turn the key. we're back here, more of "today" on this monday morning, november 4th, 2011, day one of our around the globe trek. i'm matt lauer along with savannah guthrie, and we've got a lot of stuff coming up, ann.

>> so i understand, in fact one of the things i understand that you might have coming up is a little discussion about diamonds. have you ever been able to check out those little sweet little things that come from namibia? >> ann keeps getting back to the diamonds. they are a girl's best friend. there's a long history going back to 100 years or so of diamonds being mind in the country. >> the diamond giant debeers shares 50% of the profits they make from mining diamonds here with the namibian government, and the area where the diamonds have been found has been largely closed off to the public, but we got a chance to take a trip into what's called the prohibited zone. >> wow. that sounds pretty interesting! >> reporter: they came from germany in the 1890s with dreams of endless grassland. and found 100 miles of desert. not exactly the promised land. but in 1908, all that changed

when a worker picked up a shiny stone here around this former railway station. >> they confirmed that it was a diamond, and that really all started the diamond rush around this area here. ♪ >> reporter: diamond town sprang up. thriving communities complete with bowling alleys, hospitals and dance halls. only to be abandoned 40 years later, swallowed up by the desert. debeers, the world's leading diamond company, still holds the exclusive diamond mining rights in namibia but now their focus is offshore. >> the future lies within diamond mining. >> reporter: there are 87 people working on board "the peace in africa." they direct the massive trawler that sucks stones and gravel from the ocean. on the deadmar pacific, they're

drilling for diamonds >> this is a 24-hour operation. >> reporter: the material sorted for size and pass through an x-ray examination that shows the diamonds flashing up through the stones. >> that's the thing that keeps us here. >> reporter: the sparklers get sealed up in cans with a bar code that makes it easy to track a diamond from the sea bed to the jeweler's store, preventing diamond theft is a challenge. >> we actually try to remove the opportunity for man and material to get together. hence you get a process like this. >> reporter: and the environmental laws are strictly enforced, there's on board waste management and nothing goes overboard except the gravel. this customer seems to agree. most importantly for namibians, they are stakeholders. >> every dollar that is earned from the mining operation, 85 cents of that goes back into the namibian economy. so it enables our people in the

country to earn a living with pride. >> reporter: back in the capital, the raw diamonds are sorted and graded, and namibians are trained to cut and polish their own national treasure. new york diamond company julius klein has set up a high-tech factory from where the best namibian gemstones will join a very exclusive club. it's called forever mark, and only 1% of the world's diamonds make the grade. >> for the first time, it gives consumers the opportunity to buy a diamond with full assurance that it's beautiful, that it's rare and most important that it's been responsibly sourced. >> reporter: a glittering gift reclaimed from the sands of time. and actually we have one of those beautiful diamonds with that tiny, tiny forever mark on it. savannah is holding that. >> yes, i am. this is worth about $30,000, and

political parties meet today as they hammer out the details on sunday's historic power sharing deal that forms a new unity government. embattled prime minister george papandreou agreed to resign once details of the transition are complete. the greek economy has been teetering on the brink of collapse, threatening to endanger other european nations as well, especially italy. the wealth gap between older and younger americans has doubled since 2005. it is now the widest ever recorded. census officials say the economic downturn has left americans 35 and under saddled with housing and college debt, but with limited job opportunities. americans over 65 are more likely to have paid off their mortgages and other debts while accumulating stocks, savings and other investments. blink and you'll miss her, lindsay lohan was in and out of a los angeles county jail overnight, after reporting to serve her 30-day jail sentence for violating the terms of probation, but she was released just four and a half hours after her official booking, due to

jail overcrowding. "puss in boots" was the cat's meow at the box office. it snagged the top spot for the second week in a row taking $33 million. "tower heist" debuted in second place and "a very who are alleged and kumar 3d christmas" in third. christopher neimand who illustrates a column for "the new york times" magazine painted and sketched his experience running all 26 miles of the new york city marathon, tweeting images how he ran. how did he do that? he practiced that for months to master sketching and running at the same time. he reportedly didn't even stop as he sketched but i'm sure he probably slowed down. took him six hours, 11 minutes and 18 seconds to finish. truly remarkable, considering he's sketching all along the way. >> that should be put together in some book or something.

for a year in east africa, in newark, boston and d.c. and we're excited because our fellows are making an impact this year. we know whatever they'll do throughout their career, they'll continue making a difference in global health. >> amazing. jenna, of course, we know all of your work around here at "today" but also very much involved with unicef as well as raising awareness to aids still. i imagine as a young girl you had plenty of role models in your family but who is the person who inspired you most? >> probably my mom. that's going to make me want to cry. a little emotional. >> we like tears around here. >> my mom and dad were so generous to take barbara and me on trips to africa and to latin america and we got to, you know they weren't trips. we got to witness pepfar and other government programs in action that really save lives. >> really broadened your heart. >> i remember holding a baby with hiv/aids sitting next to my mom, both of us and carrying

that at the age of 19 or 20 with your mother and seeing the world through her eyes, it makes an impression on your age and changes the trajectories of our careers. >> mrs. bush, even though you're not so much out front in the public spotlight anymore, you and president bush are very much involved with the bush initiative. >> that's right. we're working through the bush initiative which is, will be physically part of the bush library and museum but we've already started the programming and we just announced the pink ribbon, red ribbon partnership with the bush institute, with the komen foundation for the cure, the u.s. department and aids to use the pepfar platform jenna mentioned, the aids platform set up across africa and add to it treatment and vaccine for cervical cancer which is the predominant cancer in africa, and women die of it

health" a new trend in cosmetic surgery, couples going under the knife together. nbc's chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman has more on why it's less taboo for men. >> reporter: it's becoming more popular as well as accepted, a nip here, a tuck there, a quest for the fountain of youth. and doctors now say more and more patients are coming in for cosmetic procedures hand in hand. when ira and roberta almeaus got married 20 years ago they took a vow to grow old together but today their vision is to grow young together. this is a consultation with dr. mitchell chase i don't know for cosmetic procedures. he's noticed a trend in couples for two. >> years ago a wife comes in, i can't let my husband know what i'm doing and the husband would come in and say you no he what?

this is a secret. please don't tell my wife. today it's much more common for couples to talk to each other, to reinforce the positive aspects of these cosmetic treatments. >> reporter: this husband simply is trying to keep up with his wife. >> if you're going to look good, i want to look good, so we just sort of formulated and worked out to be exactly what you know, what the doctor ordered. >> reporter: after a consultation, the couple undergoes advanced three-day imaging to get a key look at the imperfections beneath the surface of their skin. >> three-dimensionally the structure of the face and the areas where aging occurs first. how do you feel? >> i don't feel anything. >> reporter: then it's showtime, botox, fillers and laser treatments. >> doesn't hurt at all. >> now i'm nervous. >> reporter: ira and roberta had minimally invasive work to help slow the signs of aging. according to the american academy of plastic surgeons, couples are also taking the plastic surgery plunge and going under the knife together.

>> i think the reason why we get to see this more often is because men are becoming more comfortable with this, and since they take care of their significant others through the process and see everything turns out okay they feel they can go forward as well. >> reporter: the moral support goes a long way to a faster recovery. >> it's really important to have your spouse or significant other be there for you psychologically. the support is really one of the most important parts. >> it should be a joint decision because the end result impacts both persons. it was something we've supported each other both physically and emotionally. >> reporter: three months later, this couple says they are seeing results. >> roberta always looked great. she had crows feet around her eyes that are gone over here. i mean i just think she looks refreshed. >> i think he looks great. he looks maybe more like his facebook picture. >> which is 20 years younger. i think it's a great experience to grow younger together and i think it's nice, because we feel

a little bit more refreshed, a little bit more energy and it's just another part of our life together that we're sharing. >> to talk more about it, dr. nancy snyderman is with me. good morning. >> hey, tamron. >> why is this a hot trend with couples? >> it's destigmatized with men. men are saying because it's açó competitive workforce, we used to make fun of men for taking care of the color of their hair. now it's fillers, it's if you are 50-some and looking for work you present better if you're in your 40s, and for a the lo of couples they seem to like the couple thing which cracks me up. >> botox is popular with men but some of the more popular things with men and women, botox, fillers, all that stuff. >> the number one plastic surgery procedure if you take away the sort of noninvasive stuff we talked about and talk about the real surgery, it's still rhinoplasties, nose jobs

and blephyrplasty, getting rid of the bags under the eyes. doctors do the procedures well. >> the most important thing is safety, it should be. ira and roberta had nonevasive. you can get a bad doctor. >> talk about a field where you have to do homework. someone must be board certified, don't rush into this stuff. >> cheaper is not always better. >> cheaper is many times not better, and i wouldn't, this is not necessarily going out of the country for. do your shopping. >> psychologically what do you think? >> psychologically for a lot of people it's a real up. i can't say there's any downside. most couples aren't necessarily going to do this but we over the years sort of poopooed it and the trend keeps going and going and going, here to stay. the couple seems happy. no college tuition for their kids but they're fine. >> oh, come on, they can do both. thank you. >> you bet.

tlc, a dream come true. >> we're making a cupcake for the seasons. >> pumpkin spice cupcake, great for thanksgiving. one of my favorite recipes, easy to make and also in our cookbook, too. sophie you want to start? >> sure, two and a half cups all purpose flour. three teaspoons of baking powder, two teaspoons of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg and all spice. >> got all of the flavors and scents of the season. >> half a teaspoon of salt, put these together and set them aside. in the mixer two sticks of butter and two cups of sugar. we'll mix that up and going to cream that until it's light and fluffy. this is a great tool if you don't have a sifter at home, use a whip. we have four large eggs, we put one in at a time. two, three, and then -- >> four, yeah! and is this canned pumpkin?
