in touch over the years. he was shocked as anyone to learn of the allegations. >> i don't know what to think. obviously, we never suspected anything like that. >> mitchell was coached by a younger joe paterno. he says he was a great person. reports have surfaced that he knew about the scandal years ago but only passed it up to higher ups at the school. >> against what it comes down to, why did you not go further? why did you not move forward with this and talk to some other people? >> paterno released a statement earlier announcing his retirement at the end of the season. it will be the end of an era for penn state football. >> let's not penalize the program and the players who are there now. i think it will go on and it
