from state college in pennsylvania with in the past hour, the penn state board of trustees announced that both joe paterno and the school president are out. gery sandusky is live with the details. >> one week ago continues to unfold with amazing speed and historic all up. joe patero's historic run ended tonight with a phone call from the board of trustees. following the arrest of his defense a coordinator who was alleged to a sexual abuse scandal. his lack of a production taken against his former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky has exasperated into a national scallop -- scandal.

>> as i said, these arts judgments and decisions that we have to make with thoughtful deliberation. i think we reached a point where it was necessary. we thought the best long-term interest for the university. >> they made a brief statement saying, right now i am not a football coach. that is something i have to get used to. the assistant coach will take over as the interim head coach. we have learned that the u.s. department of investing -- the u.s. department of education has launched an investigation. >> at the center of the scandal are children who were allegedly victimized. according to the baltimore child abuse center, only 10% are ever reported. tips for parents to protect their children. >> experts say it is important to know the warning signs of

sexual abuse. one of the best ways to prevent it from happening is to have constant dialogue with your kids. >> one of the lessons to come out of the cases it is not just about them and those people over there but this can happen to anybody. >> he says that 90% of child sex abuse cases that the children know their abusers. >> we spend a lot of time stressing strangers danger but the reality is we need to have a watchful eye over the people we have watched our children. >> the sex abuse scandal at penn state, school officials and a joke paternal have been criticized for not doing more after they were alerted of the -- joe paterno for not doing more after they were alerted of the scandal. >> if they started touching other children in class or in an inappropriate way, if they start having nightmares, some children

will regress meaning they will start having accidents and will not use the bathroom the way they used to. >> if you start seeing dramatic changes in your child, it is time to start asking questions. to prevent any type of excess -- abuse from happening, it is important to be proactive and have an open dialogue with your children. >> what actions are inappropriate. who do they feel safe with or do not feel so forth. it is something to happen on a regular basis. >> it is unclear how pennsylvania had lost their sex abuse cases, but here anybody who sees abuse is required to report it or face severe penalty. >> a pennsylvania artist says he has decided to restate -- repaint his penn state mural. he painted over his jerry sandusky merrill. he was moved to repaint the art work after the mother of one of

sandusky's pickens e-mail and asked him to do so. he could not bear for his work to cause more pain. our own gerry sandusky has encountered some backlash because his name has been mistakenly tied to this scandal. >> people have asked me for 20 years, argue any relation to the jerry sandusky of penn state. it was a one word answer, though. now, it is the biggest story in the country all week long. is bizarre. >> how has the past week and for our own sandusky? he goes one-on-one with donna hamilton. that is tomorrow night at 11:00 on wba ltv.
