9:00 am
what a sight. we are back on this thursday morning, the 10th day of november, 2011, day four of "where in the world is matt lauer" and as you know, by now, he's in one of the most spectacular spots in the world and one of switzerland's most popular destinations, i hope i'm pronouncing it right. jungfraujoch, also called the top of europe. here in new york i'm ann curry along with al roker and savannah guthrie and matt is enjoying the view. we've really been enjoying matt and kerry watching you this
9:01 am
morning. >> it's been so much fun. we're looking for those instant reactions, the first one, now play along, ann, savannah, and al, the first we're looking for is, wow. >> wow! >> wow. >> right? the second one we're looking for is, oh. >> oh, look at. >> look at these. >> so cute. >> little 9-week-old st. bernard puppies. aren't they cute? these are the official mascots of the swiss alps. >> bring them home. >> no kegs. >> those are 9 months old? they're so big. >> i know. well, you know, the reason they had them here initially is before helicopters these were the rescue dogs and they would pull the sleds and as matt said there are no kegs. that was a big myth anyway. there never was any brandy. >> we just like playing with them, guys. we'll have much more ahead. back to you guys. >> okay. we'll stop in and talk to you in a second. first we want to mention there is much more ahead including an interview with conrad murray.
9:02 am
>> we talked with dr. conrad murray just days before he was convicted in the death of michael jackson and he talks about the days and hours before michael jackson died, how things were in that house. we'll have a little bit more of that interview coming up. >> okay. al? >> then a little later on you try dieting, you're losing weight and all of a sudden you hit a plateau. how do you jump-start yourself? well, joy bauer is here with our diet s.o.s. she'll also talk about the health benefits of brewed tea, and also about healthy snacks. >> that sounds like good information. let's go back to switzerland and talk again to matt and kerry. hey, guys. what you got coming up? >> all right, ann. we've been here for two hours. we have not mentioned something and it's almost unbelievable. swiss cheese. how is that possible? >> it is something that you will actually find surprising because when you think of switzerland, you may think of chocolate and you may think of cheese of course. average american eats 31 pounds of cheese a year. here in switzerland, 47 pounds of cheese.
9:03 am
but there is a revelation. the swiss will tell you, and i found it hard to believe, there is no such thing here as swiss cheese. >> picking up cheese, it's an ingrained routine of life here that borders on obsession. much the way every american's refrigerator has a carton of milk the swiss have their cheese. >> i bought this for tomorrow morning. >> and it'll be gone? >> for breakfast. i need it for breakfast, yes. >> oh, wow. >> reporter: here, high in the alps they boast they make the best cheese in the world. >> this is fondue. >> this is fondue, yes. >> reporter: heidi married into a family of cheesemakers. she is used to correcting americans like me who ask about swiss cheese. where is the swiss cheese? >> that's all the swiss cheese. >> reporter: like the grindewald mountain cheese crafted here in the alps, not for export. >> the farmer makes it up in the
9:04 am
mountain. >> reporter: up in the mountains? from 3400 feet we climbed even higher into the alps to the kaufman farm. adolph and his family have 15 cows. for four generations his family has had no problem sharing why the cheese here tastes like no other. because, he says, the recipe cannot be copied. what makes the cheese here so special? >> it's the milk. >> what makes the milk so special? >> the grass, the herbs, the flowers. >> reporter: the grass, the herbs, and the flowers. the swiss say it's a combination found only at this altitude and only here in the alps. this is utterly ridiculous but i decided to help. okay. as long as i'm milking the story, not my most moving experience. oh, so that's how it's really
9:05 am
done. just as her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother did, daniellea takes the raw milk, adds bacteria, and for the next hour stirs and stirs and stirs. the mixture is molded and then stored. >> this is the best cheese of the world. >> reporter: it will remain here for more than three years before anyone ever tastes it. now what we call swiss cheese they call ebontahler. this is fondue and it's important because you share it with friends so, matt, i thank you for inviting me along. we'll share some fondue. >> okay. and this is -- hasn't had a flame under it in a while so this is going to be interesting. it's actually still warm. >> delicious. at least two types of cheeses for the fondue and then sometimes they will add additional liquid cheeses. >> i think there is wine in there too isn't there? >> there is some wine in there.
9:06 am
>> that is not bad. so, folks, that just about wraps it up for us as we've got some wine and fondue. and don't forget the clue for tomorrow with the alps at our back we make tracks for a party of epic proportions. cheers, kerry. >> good for you. >> savannah, al, and ann, back to you guys. >> spectacular day, my friend. >> thanks a lot. you've been doing so well. so great to see kerry's piece. i'm glad to see you enjoying a glass of wine after all your hard work this week, matt. enjoy this next voyage. be safe. we look forward to seeing where you are tomorrow. >> we will. >> all right. let's check the top stories of the morning. i hear a cow bell. >> all right. >> good morning, you guys. good morning, everyone. emotions and tensions flared during the night at penn state university moments after the announcement came the legendary football coach joe paterno had been fired. police in riot gear confronted

9:08 am
his death? >> well, i love michael, too. i'm as much a fan as any of the others. to be blamed for his death has not been an easy thing. >> reporter: dr. conrad murray first met michael jackson during a house call in las vegas in 2006 and saw him off and on from that point forward. >> this is it. i'll see you in july. >> reporter: but when jackson agreed to a comeback tour in 2009, he wanted his own, full-time doctor with him. and the concert promoter agreed to hire jackson's pick, dr. murray, for a salary of $150,000 a month. >> did you really not know he had an addiction problem? >> absolutely not. did not have a clue. >> reporter: murray was hired full-time in march, 2009, and between april and june of that year prosecutors say he ordered 255 vials of propofol, adding up to more than four gallons for
9:09 am
jackson's personal use. for two months jackson came home late at night from rehearsals and dr. murray's work day began, setting up michael with an iv in his bedroom, administering propofol to help him sleep. to you, there is still nothing wrong with giving propofol in a home setting? >> i think propofol is not recommended to be given in a home setting, but it is not contra indicated. >> reporter: at trial, one of the most shocking pieces of evidence showed michael jackson in early may under the influence of something. >> when people leave my show, i want them to say, i've never seen nothing like this in my life. go. go. >> reporter: the slurred voice of michael jackson, six weeks before his death, in a recording police found on conrad murray's iphone. what was the purpose of
9:10 am
recording him? >> it was incidentally recorded. >> reporter: you mean an accident? >> yeah. it was an accident. >> reporter: when did you find out it had been recorded? >> in court. >> reporter: during opening statements. >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: though he desperately wanted that comeback, michael jackson's days were numbered, and dr. murray was the last person ever to see michael jackson alive. how much pressure did you feel to get him to sleep? >> oh, tremendous -- tremendous. it was nothing that i have ever encountered. >> reporter: you were the last person to see him or talk to him before he died. what was he like in those final hours? >> a desperate man. desperate. >> reporter: are you the cause of michael jackson's death? >> reporter: no. i'm not. >> reporter: do you remember his final words before he died? >> it was probably -- i don't know -- it was probably when he was pleading and begging me to

please, please let him have some milk because that was the only thing that would work. >> and savannah will have part two of her interview with conrad murray tomorrow on "today." the toronto zoo is raising some eyebrows over efforts to breed penguins. two of the zoo's male african penguins pedro and buddy have developed what the zoo calls a loving relationship. some are calling them gay penguins and even zoo officials say they show signs of mating behavior. well now the zoo is splitting up the love birds and pairing them with females. by the way, more than 33,000 people saw this story on our website and 83% want pedro and buddy to stay together. it is now 11 minutes past the hour. let's go back outside to al with a check of your weather. >> thank you so much. got some friends here. somebody going to the american girl store i am guessing. all right. let's check your weather. for today we have tropical storm sean out there. it's 375 miles west/southwest of bermuda, 65-mile-per-hour winds moving north-northeast at 8.

it's going to swing west of bermuda as a possibly category 1 storm hurricane i should say. and it looks like it may interact with this frontal system coming in. you can see some showers just off the mid-atlantic coast. it'll also cause some heavier rain today and later on into this evening into new england. showers throughout interior portions of new york, also along the front more showers. look for clouds in the pacific northwest. windy and a little cooler down through the southwest. 66 degrees in dallas >> good morning. be careful this morning. we have some fog in some neighborhoods. a slight chance for a rain

9:19 am
tea? >> yes, it does. the longer you brew or steep your tea, the healthy compounds are going to increase in the tea water. you're going to get more out of the tea leaves into the water. also, al, interestingly enough, the caffeine will increase as well. so the bottom line is, you don't want to take that tea bag out too quickly and i think a good compromise is anywhere from three to five minutes because after five minutes the tea starts to taste very bitter. but the longer the better. >> okay. next we got another viewer e-mail from marilyn in staten island writing, trying to lose weight but i work crazy, 16-hour days. don't have time or energy to prepare healthy meals in the evening when i get home. my diet is going nowhere. should i start buying lo-cal frozen dinners? >> the commercial lo-calorie frozen dinners are a good option but the portions tend to be measly and also sometimes you get preservatives and more sodium than you bargained for. here is a better strategy. on her day off, one day a week, i want her to make two healthy recipes that can be frozen in bulk.
9:20 am
you want to think stews and case roels, hearty soups, even turkey burgers. double the recipe. then single portion them out into containers, label what the recipe is, the title, and the date. pop them in the freezer. after a few weeks of doing the strategy she is going to have a plentiful stash of delicious, home made meals that are healthy, that are lo-calorie. when she comes home exhausted after a long day, in minutes she could either pop them in the microwave or the oven and they are ready. >> all right. great advice. thanks so much. >> thanks, al. coming up, what every kid will be clamoring for this holiday season. we have got the hottest toys on their gift list. but first, these messages. i'm rob jones. as a former fighter pilot, i like the fact that quicken loans offers va loans. my name is marjorie reyes. i am very grateful that quicken loans can offer service members va loans. play with these girls. these are the monster high seer fris mattel. they do have a literary connection because this is frankie stein, daughter of frankenstein. what i liked about the series is they focus on the character traits of the dolls rather than what they look like. they're dressed in teen appropriate gear for monsters i guess. but this is also the hydration bed for blue laguna for when she's dead tired. definitely has a sense of humor. >> kind of avatar looking. >> what is really cool, she is totally in water but if you look behind she is really standing behind the water. very clever use of technology. >> interesting. all right. let's get to the games and gadgets. a lot of people, these are all platinum award winners. >> this is the leap pad from leap frog talking about technology, this is really what i would say the hottest electric gadget for kids. it has a hundred apps for it. for $99 it has a built-in camera, built-in video camera, educational games from leap frog. >> that is the key.

educational games. >> you don't want to hand over your own ipod to your child, this is the perfect solution. >> what do we see our girls playing? >> the girls are playing simon flash. interestingly, i found a little simon trivia introduced in 1978 at studio 54. it's now been redesigned with these flash cubes and you still have to follow along. it's challenging. there are four different levels to play, four different games. a really good game for tweens, teens, and even college adults to play and a good travel game for the holidays. >> if you're into a mental tug of war kind of game. >> right. >> i can't believe this one. this actually works? >> well, alex and michael are over here working on it. this is my flex stool which now you are actually putting on your head bands. it's reading your brain waves. >> really. >> this one really does work. it's great fun. they'll have a mental tug of war pushing the ball back and forth. they can also do obstacles as well which is really -- >> use the force.

>> they showed us this at toy fair and we thought they were joking. it really does work. >> hooks on to the ear lobe? >> yes. and the ball is going up in the air. now "star wars" never loses its appeal. >> "star wars" is so big, the number one request of our toy testers. these are now really for advanced and intermediate builders. there is the jedi shuttle totally cool. >> unbelievable. >> this one is my favorite. >> my son wants this, the millennium falcon, but it is a thousand pieces not to mention a big price tag. >> yes it is. it is something a parent and child could do together or for a more advanced builder. it has the secret compartment where they hid in the first movie and comes with all the action figures, darth vader is there as well. >> fantastic. >> not everything needs to cost a lot of money. the kids are trying the fire flies, under $10. totally cool. >> love that. okay. flying high here. they usually are flying but we can't do that with the lights. these are really cool. >> these are air swimmers. they're not just balloons but remote controlled balloons. so you can make them dive.
