how many cooler for a child to say grandma, i earned every penny of this present i bought. >> that is great. the next thing you say is, now that they have some money is to make sure you boost their consumer shopping skills. >> what you want them to do is better than how to be a smart little spender and one little way is hey i want to buy a tv for dad, don't know the best way to do it. can you go online and look at the "consumer reports." for the little one, the penny saver ads and figure out the best deal for perfume for grandma. go to one store with your child, why one store? you're bet eter off to bring th penny saver ads to are that store and compare what is the best price point and most importantly, natalie, make sure the little guy goes to the cash register with his own cash, not your credit card, and if it goes over his price point, he has to take something out of the card. it's a great lesson. >> great lesson, absolutely. teaches them math skills as well. >> yes. >> also keep a spending and

savings log because we know the spending and savings goes quickly this time of year. >> goes really quickly and they want you to be their atm machine. even a little guy can have a simple little record book of just write down how much money each thing costs or older teen can keep record of their receipts. this is also a great thing to remember to put in a stocking stuffer, a piggy bank for your younger one, even a little baby food jar is absolutely perfect for coins, because you can see through it but can't spend it until it's saved up. >> perfect, next thing is to teach them to cut impulsive shopping. >> yes. >> so wait on the purchase. teach them to wait. . >> the wait is the hard part because they are so impulsive but one simple little one on this one is, when you get money from grandma, you just wait at least 24 hours before spending it or a week, or a few days, or whatever it is. what happens is by the following day, very often the kid goes i don't know if i really wanted that. makes them think it through, and wait something one of the best success traits that there is in life.
9:48 am
>> we could all learn from that, learning how to wait and not be so impulsive. the last one is to consider buying gifts after the holidays, tell them to wait until after, because why? >> because the best deals are the day after. >> yes we all know that. >> that doesn't mean everything but many parents are actually saying let's do one gift after the holiday, it's almost always half the price, and it's fun to go shopping as a family together. >> right, and plus you get so inundated with gifts during the holidays so nice to have something after. michel michele borba, thanks so much. check out our website today.com. coming up next, bringing out the flavor of chicken, pound by pound, but first this is "today" on nbc.
