double digits in several major polls, and that is bringing him a lot more attention and criticism from his opponents. michele bachmann questioning his conservativism. the new attack ad from ron paul talks about the $1.6 million he earn as a consultant for freddie mac saying it's the essence of a washington insider. gingrich on cnbc says he is the only speaker to balance the budget. mitt romney hoping to get back in front-runner status, tied in some polls with ron paul, has a key endoerment from dan quayle and romney says he has time in what washgs he'll iowa and will campaigning aggressively there. the obama administration has taken a significant step in protecting the rights of gay,

lesbian and transgendered community around the world. on orders from president obama secretary of state hillary clinton told a conference in geneva that the u.s. will use foreign aid to reward countries that safeguard gay rights. firmly linking gay rights with human rights, the administration has also vowed to actively combat efforts by other nations that criminalize and abuse gays or ignore abuse against homosexuals. the chief of the federal aviation administration has stepped down from his position after he was arrested on drunk driving charges over the weekend. randy babbitt's recognition comes halfway through his term as faa. he was pulled over in virginia where they said the 65-year-old was driving on the wrong side of the road. now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. a cantaloupe-sized cannonball fired by the crew of a reality

show "mythbusters" nearly took the lives of several people. the projectile ripped through one home and across six lanes of traffic. before slamming into a parked mini van. no one, luckily, was injured. a kentucky family is very lucky to be alive after escaping their home moments before it exploded. they were able to avoid tragedy after the father spotted smoke and flames coming from his second floor window. the apparent natural gas explosion reduced the home to just a pile of debris and fire. nearby homes were evacuated before fire crews put out the flames. if you're looking to make a splash at your office christmas party, one vermont has the perfect out yit. marie blackman ships what she calls her ugly christmas sweaters worldwide. her creations have become wildly popular. she has about 80 designs for sale. now for a look at your national and regional weather

here's nbc meteorologist bill karins with your forecast. there's one looking at that saying, i have a sweater like that. >> if you don't have an old ugly sweater in your closet, we all do. >> oh, yeah. circa 1987. >> at least i do. >> i do. >> we don't need pictures. you can visualize it. good morning, everyone. a lot of interesting weather facts this morning. cold air, a little snow in areas that don't see it and a lot of rain heading for the east coast. starting with the temperatures, the cold air has plunged, 27 in dallas this morning. 13 in kansas city. so the core of the really cold air over the middle of the country. the east coast is still unusually warm but that's quickly ending. the rain will be moving in shortly in many areas. and eventually some areas will turn over to a little snow. not everyone but especially the higher elevations in new england. this morning the cold air is in place. we have a lot of rain out ahead of it. it's a huge shield of soaking rain all of west virginia this morning, mountainous areas of

tennessee, north carolina and also virginia. now we're starting to watch some of that increasing around washington, d.c. the beltway north way to baltimore. heading up to philly, that rain will increase as we go throughout your morning commute. i mentioned there's enough cold air for snow. we got it in the deep south. we had a coating of snow in little rock. it's snowing pretty good. and from pine bluff in memphis there will be snow. i'm sure there will school cancellations because northern mississippi doesn't get a lot of snow. snow for new england, not a big event. vermont, new hampshire, and higher elevations. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. we are going to watch atlanta, georgia, today a cool, chilly rain for you. temperatures peaking mostly in the 40s. denver, colorado, a little better today. warm-up for you. temperature of 40 degrees after brutally cold air yesterday. happy to say weather pattern calms down starting tomorrow.

look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,150 after gang 5 points yesterday. the s&p was up a point. but the nasdaq lost 6. taking a look at overseas trading this morning n tokyo the nikkei jumped 147 points, while in hong kong the hang seng climbed 298. well, solid investor confidence and the outcome of europe's upcoming financial summit led the dow higher tuesday. expectationses france and germany will press for a tough new union treaty were stirred by reports lead ezers at the summit will boost the rescue fund. a sharp recent slide of italian and spanish bond yields is seen as reinforcing belief europe has begun tackling its debt issue. tuesday's gains came despite standard & poor's warning monday it may cut the credit rating of 15 eurozone countries. traders shrugged off another s&p warning, it may cut the rating

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports the nhl addressing the long-time complaints of hockey fans and teams have come up with a new plan for the make up of its competitive conferences. here is nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. >> good morning. when the atlanta thrashers became the winnipeg jets it not only put another team in canada it created a geographical problem with the league's six divisions. problem solved. nhl approved a new four-conference format that will go into effect next season. andrew ladd but them on the board in the first period and jets were up 1-0. to the third, game tied 1-1, brian little with a big goal, the event you'll game winner. now in toronto, the devils

booted off an airliner. baldwin got into a fight with a flight attendant and was forced to leave a los angeles flight for refusing to stop playing the game words with friends while parked at the gate. it is kind of addictive. he tweeted that the next plane he caught had, quote, smarter looking flight attendants. robert downey jr. will welcome a little iron man of his own next year. the actor and his wife, susan, revealed they're expecting a baby boy. reports say jennifer lopez has bought film rights to the video game franchise carmen san diego and plays to play the thief in a new action movie. and bradley cooper is not excited to be "people's" world sexest man. he told graham norton, quote, it's the worst. it's just so awful. don't you feel bad for him, bill? cooper joked at age 36 he really doesn't care about stuff like that anymore but after being awarded the title, now he
