them and the gunman acted alone -- that is the conclusion of the investigators in the virginia tech deadly shooting. good afternoon, everyone. ballistic tests and video have confirmed what authorities already suspected, but they still cannot say why a man shot and killed a campus police officer and then possibly killed himself. we get the latest. >> virginia state police say it looks like thursday's deadly shooting at virginia tech was a murder-suicides. ballistic tests show the same gun used to kill campus police officer crouse was also found beside the body of a man dead from a suspected self-afflicted

gunshot. >> we are confident we know with the individual is, but do protocol, the medical examiner's office must make that positive identification. >> shortly after noon thursday, officer crouse had made a traffic stop in a campus parking lot with a man she walked up and shot him at point-blank range as he shot in his -- as he sat in his car. >> you have heard him describe as a swat officer and many things, but he was more than that. deriek was a friend. >> half an hour later, less than half a mile a, the dead suspected killer was found, but investigators cannot explain his motive yet. >> we have made no connection that the shooter and officer crouse knew one another prior to the shooting. >> the scene was eerily similar to that of nearly five years ago. when a student shot and killed 32 people before killing

himself. unlike them, a university lockdown was ordered on thursday within minutes. >> homicide detectives are handling a late-night shooting in charles village. it happened just before 11:00 thursday night in the 2900 block of north calvert street where officers found an unidentified man shot in the head. no word on his condition, but due to the serious nature of his wounds, homicide is investigating. a federal judge will sentence the wife of former prince county executive jack johnson today for her role in her husband's corruption scandal. leslie johnson faces up to a year and a half in prison after pleading guilty. federal agents say she flushed a $100,000 check given as a bride down the toilet and agents found her trying to smuggle $80,000 in bribe money out of the house in her underwear. earlier this week, jack johnson was sentenced to seven years behind bars.

a teenage pedestrian has died after being struck by a car. the vehicle that the 16-year-old girl near the intersection of annapolis road and ohio avenue just before 5:00 thursday evening. she later died at shock trauma. the driver remained on the scene. investigators have not determined who was at fault. >> we started out this morning kind of chili. temperatures were in the 20's. a little frost out there, but it has warmed up. it is very nice right now by december standards. 40 degrees at the airport. we should be able to sneak into the low 50's in most areas this afternoon. over 40's of north. partly to mostly sunny skies. it will turn colder or the weekend. we will check the seven-day forecast when i come back in a few minutes. >> in today's project economy report, a baltimore is going to take a second lap at the grand prix tour, organizers will have to dig out of a mountain of

debt. the baltimore sun reports event organizers only have $100,000 in cash on hand and still owe over $12 million. meanwhile, 11 news has learned former consternation executive wants to take over the baltimore racing development group. he has a plan to cut expenses by 50% and make it is profitable for organizers next year. but needed changes are coming to thurgood marshall airport near the terminal will get a $100 million makeover. the state board of public works has approved $65 million so far for the renovation of the oldest part of the airport over the next two years. the renovations will create space for more security screening stations and add new concessions. it will also allow passengers to move between concourses a, b, and c without passing through security again. and still might regarding your paycheck on capitol hill. the senate rejecting plans to extend a payroll tax holiday on thursday. kate tells us what comes next.

a veto if the pipeline provision is attached. however many jobs might be generated by a keystone pipeline, there will be a lot fewer than the jobs created by extending the payroll tax cut and extent of one insurance. >> the payroll tax is currently at 4.2%. it would jump to 6.2% on january 1 if congress does not act. >> thank you. drivers beware. another speed camera is going up along the beltway. state highway officials say starting to it -- tuesday, the highway administration will begin operating the camera at the -- wrote as a peer drivers will have a three-week grace period where they will receive a warning. after that, and when traveling 12 miles or more over the posted 55 will be mailed a fine. coming up, why breast cancer survivors may want to cut back on such foods pure glass, the deadline has come and gone, but the occupy protesters remain in boston during the latest on efforts to get them to move out.

>> in today's consumer alert -- good news for retailers. holiday buying is up. retail sales in november were up significantly from last year and it is expected to stay that way this month. according to "consumer reports," americans are splurging even though unemployment remains high and consumer confidence remains low. researchers suggest consumers might see the steadiness as a positive one contrast that with the last several years. you can avoid some stress of gift-giving this year by giving cards, but you do not have to pay full price. you can save between 8% and 35% if you buy cards from reputable

retailers. or you can buy a discount card and use it yourself. how about that? there is an interesting phenomenon expected this christmas involving young children getting some sophisticated gifts. the issue is it is not necessarily the gift itself but where it comes from. >> a pbs survey of parents of two to 10-year-old found a quarter of them were giving their kids a personal technology device for christmas this year. like a laptop or smartphone. in many instances, the device will be and handed down. >> a lot of adults are upgrading, and they are going for the new iphone or new ipad, said they are going to hand down their existing device to their kids. >> experts say it is especially important to sweep a second-hand device. >> kids have a tendency to lose devices. you want to make sure your

and variable. eventually, they will shift to the northwest, and tomorrow, we will get a little taste of that arctic air mass. i will modify a lot, but wins will shift to the north on saturday and temperatures will be below average. today, we are above average. we do expect dry conditions, so the rest of the week and will be just fine. just a little bit colder. we will stay high temperature of around 43 on saturday, starting at near 30 in the morning. i to withdraw all the way down to 23 on sunday morning. very cold start, but we should make it up to 45 in the afternoon. if you are going to be reagan's game, it will be just fine. he said in the sun and stay out of the wind, it will not be too bad. chance for some rain, it looks like, by the middle of next week with high temperatures in the 40's dear all in all, not a bad seven-day forecast. >> thanks. a warning for the folks in scotland. at least 30,000 people in the

even though we are in the same vote, nobody is thinking about anyone else. to have someone come along behind and do something that was totally unnecessary but so appreciated -- it just really made a difference. >> i entered as a medical alert, breast cancer patients who increase their starched intake are at greater risk for recurrence of the disease. researchers followed more than 3000 breast cancer survivors for seven years, looking at their carbohydrate intake. women who increase their starch and take the most over the next year were 4.5% more likely to have a recurrence then those who decrease their starch intake. this risk was limited to women with lower grade tumors. some surprising new data on the heart health of marathon athletes. scientists in australia examined 40 healthy endurance athletes immediately after a race and found all of them showed a decrease function in

the right ventricle of their heart. most of that damage reversed itself within a week, but 13% of the athletes suffered permanent scarring of the heart. further research showed those athletes had been dissipated in endurance sports the longest. researchers say it does not necessarily mean insurance -- endurance sports are healthy, only that the right ventricle of the heart is more susceptible. the colts quarterback, of course, hoping to play at some point this season, but the season start will not come on sunday, said the colts turned to and to lead the offense. the indiana coach understand this week he and his team faced a defense far less likely to get sleepy. and that brings us to our raven's tax question for the
