[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> afternoon. i am mindy basara. we are following several breaking stories, including a carbon monoxide scare in baltimore. this is on the 1900 block of washington boulevard. just after it 10:00 this morning, there was a carbon dioxide -- carbon monoxide leak.

the source of the leak is unknown at the time. the other developing story we are following, a deadly fire in east baltimore broke out at 9:00 in the 2700 block of east middle street. our reporter joins us live. rob, what can you tell us about this? >> firefighters got the call at 9:13 a.m. they arrived and encountered heavy, heavy smoke coming from the first floor of this house. the video you are looking at now was taken by greg cook. he used his phone. he is a resident here. firefighters tried to get the fire under control, first of all looking for people inside. they did find one person, an elderly person in her 80's. when they got to her, she had already passed away. >> the flames moved over the

house so fast. there was nothing anybody could do. by the time the fire department got here, the whole front of the porch was engulfed. they tried and tried, but they did not succeed. >> firefighters are still on the scene here. they are combing the area, trying to determine the cause of the fire. we are told by fire fighters there was at least one working smoke alarm inside the home, but once again, and the 84-year-old lady did not get out alive. residents are telling me they knew the victim. she was known in the community and she worked in the baltimore city school system for a number of years. she retired some time ago. firefighting officials have not release the name of the victim yet. we will have more on this coming up to nine of 5:00.

>> -- tonight at 5:00. >> thank you. we are told everyone escaped a second fire without injury but the house was a total loss. there is a house fire, a case of arson and a hate crime being investigated. it began inside a home in brooklyn park. when firefighters fought the flames under control, they found racial and sexual slurs painted on the outside of the house. no one was, at the time of the fire. a shocking attack is caught on tape and has gone viral. you can see these men trying to detain a man when another person comes out of nowhere and punches the officer in the face. officers say they were initially dealing with ham, who smelled of

alcohol, when there -- with manuel, who smelled of alcohol, when their attention was diverted by the second man. >> it is a sobering reminder of what these men go through. >> police have a charged manuel with assault on an officer. they have issued a warrant for the second man's arrest. a man is accused of raping a 12- year-old girl. police officers working security at skate works testified. they also heard from the alleged victim and saw surveillance video from the day of the alleged attack in 2010. the attorney for the defendant argues there is no dna evidence. the city housing authority is paying a hefty price for its failure to pay on a multimillion-dollar judgment. city sheriff's arrived wednesday, tagging about 20

city-owned vehicles which will go up for auction to pay the fine. the court found the city failed to do anything about lead paint in housing projects during the early 1990's. >> the viability is enormous, but the housing authority is taking the position of sticking their head in the sand like an ostrich. but the fine will not go away. the brain damage all these children have will not go away. >> the auction could be earlier -- could be early next month. adam meister and frank conaway are sticking to their stories. they began arguing last month. the confrontation eventually became physical. both men say they're glad the

proceedings are now over. >> i am not surprised. i did not to anything wrong, so i am pleased the circus is over, i guess, and we can move on. >> i was relieved, of course. at the same time, and was very angry because of the kind of coverage on this story because some of it was wrong. >> legal documents show that at some point adam meister tried to kick frank conaway, and frank conaway displayed a handgun. >> the news in the weather has been about temperatures. we did hit a low spot in the last couple of days. this red line indicates the normal high of this time of year, around 42. we have bottomed out, but now we are rising. temperatures will go above normal for a few days.

over and me and my boys will catch them. >> that is amazing. fire crews used a ladder to rescue the grandmother. no word on what caused the fire. a local mother took -- and oklahoma mother took matters into her own hands when he's tried to break into her home. -- theives tried to break into her home. >> i said, i cannot tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby. >> she was alone on new year's eve when two men started beating down her door. she waited for police to arrive, but was forced to confront the suspects on her own. >> they were going from door to door. they said i could not shoot them until they were inside the house. i waited until they got inside, and then i shot. >> she shot and killed one man.

and downs, but they were consistently high. this was the most expensive gasoline year on record. >> he knows what those high prices mean and what the price in january, 2012 means four things to come. >> we are coming out of the starting blocks at a very, very high price. >> january traditionally has the lowest prices of the year. if prices are higher now, they will keep going up. >> it is not uncommon for prices to go up as much as $0.90, which means we will probably break the record high. >> and did not budget for it because it is something that you do. now you have to take into consideration in your budget. >> you cut back on everything, groceries, clothing. every household expense, you have to cut back on. >> higher prices not only hurt the family budget but also take a bite out of the local economy.

forecast. >> we had a little disturbance to ourself early this morning, some -- our south early this morning, some light showers. there is another disturbance that is going to pass to the north. our state is getting some snow out of that. we're going to pick up a few clouds. we had some sun this morning. it felt good. there will be more of a missed than ahead as far as any kind of weather is concerned out of this cloud. let's concentrate on temperatures. 43 in annapolis. hopkins will be 37 along with westminster. frederick is 43. it is only in the 30's and 20's in far western maryland. the snow in the ski areas is sticking.

here is the satellite picture. here is the disturbance the past through earlier. another one is up in the great lakes. another little front. these are all very weak. they do not carry much moisture at all. there is a little bit of snow in new york state. off to the northwest, there is more. again, the track of these things is going to come down through the great lakes and slide by as more than hit us or take direct aim at us. it is not a very stormy weather pattern at all. all of the stuff coming out of canada, the moisture is all cut off. any precipitation would be very limited to begin with. but today, we have a mix of sun and clouds. it is partly cloudy now. we had a little bit of clouds earlier. 40-45, and we are right in that range now. we have hit the high temperatures. winds are up to 25 knots.

there is a small craft advisory. there are these disturbances to the north, the generally fair weather. by saturday and sunday, we could see something flow through the area, again, not very significant. the 7-day forecast is not too bad. send a lotus dry, but in the 40's for highs. -- sunday looks dry, but in the 40's 4 highs. >> we have answers to your pet questions. what kind of dog is this? >> it is a large dog trapped in a small dogsbody. it is some kind of pomeranian/to watch. i have seen the stock in day care a lot.

it is ready to go. >> let's get to the questions. i have a new puppy. i want to take him to puppy class is as well as doggie day care. i was told i should get a flu vaccine. >> this is a new vaccine on the market. there have been some news stories about this. it is not for every dog. if you do not go to day cares or dog parks, you do not need it, but if you are anywhere where other dogs are, grooming, boarding, day care, you need the flu vaccine. it is in pennsylvania, new jersey, around maryland. it is endemic in pennsylvania and new jersey. >> i got a new path for christmas, nine weeks old. when should i start -- cat for christmas, nine weeks old. when should i start getting her vaccines? >> you want to start vaccinating your animal at eight weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age.
