detected on the door. residents did not hear about this crime. given the communities close relationship with authorities, they were surprised police did not warn them. >> it has caused a lot of our rich and they will be hearing about it. >> on december 30 at 6:30 p.m., two suspects approached a designer. they said hello as they displayed a handgun saying, where is your phone and your money. he give up his phone saying his wallet was at the house. the suspects even tried to pry his tv mounted on the wall. authorities say they took clothing, wallet, and apple ipad tablet. that was not enough. they ordered him back into his infinity suv enter a room for our stopping at atm machines to

withdraw money from his account. some of the withdrawn attempts failed. they took turns holding a gun to the victim. according to a police report, the suspects mention that day had killed people previously but would not kill him as long as they cooperated. >> the holiday weekend it did not stop police or city hall from telling a significant decline in the number of murders. here is footage of a man attacking a city officer as the attempted to make an arrest. >> this particularly jarring crime went unnoticed. >> i think it was in the communications pipeline. >> the neighbors at the mount royal association meeting which is our larger neighborhood association were shocked that our representatives from the police department who appeared at this meeting the was not aware of this crime at all.

situation. >> the victim of the first deadly fire of 2012 has been identified. rob roblin has been on the scene since early this morning. we understand she had been with the schools more than 30 years. >> she was a schoolteacher. in 1981, ms. mary hines retired as a principal. she has lived in this community for 50 years. she was known as ms. mary and she was loved by everybody. you are looking at cell phone video taken by craig cook this morning when firefighters first arrived. >> the flames took over the house so fast, there was nothing anybody could do. by the time the fire department got here, it was like the first -- the whole front of the porch was engulfed. they tried and tried. they say it did not succeeded.

>> firefighters discovered the body of an elderly woman. >> she appeared to be on the first floor in between the first term and the metal rim of the dwelling itself. there was a working smoke detector going on inside the dwelling. however, this woman appears to have had some motel -- mobility issues. >> neighbors say the victim worked inside the baltimore city school system and was a longtime resident of the community. one of her neighbors said she was well known and well liked in the neighborhood. >> people will come by and remember her as being their teacher from third grade and up. >> did you live next to her for a long time? >> yes, i have been here for a long time. >> firefighters say they're working smoke detectors in the home and they were trying to remember what caused the blaze appeared >> she did everything she could for people.

she was a very good woman. very respectful. >> this is the first fire fatality for the city of baltimore this year. >> tonight a man is charged with attempted murder and assault after police say he set fire to his girlfriend. the iteam brought you the story back in november reporting as a man and woman burned and their home. tonight police say the flames were set on purpose. he is accused of pouring paint thinner of his girlfriend and sending her on fire as well. a search of the apartment and uncovered the only working smoke detector ripped from the ceiling. >> baltimore for county fire crews were busy. a blaze broke out at 7:30 on the sunshine avenue. everyone the escaped without injury. the house was a total loss.

because of that fire remains under investigation. >> the prosecution has rested in the trial of a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl inside a roller rink the storage closet. it focused largely on dna evidence. barry simms has been in court all day. he joins us with the latest developments. >> the judge tossed out 11 of the charges against dave. they decided not to prosecute 12 others. the jury will charge of second- degree rape, assault and perverted practice. now let's tell you about the dna evidence. >> prosecutors presented a key part of the investigation into the sexual assault of a 12-year- old girl. they also included an explanation on why their case did not include any dna evidence. he is charged with the august 14, 2010 rape in woodlawn.

the victim claims that they dragged her into -- a director into a storage room and forced her to do sexual acts on them. she found the dna of the co- defendants on the victim and on the victim's clothes. jurors were told there was no dna match for dave. dna cannot prove guilt or innocence. it is a small piece of the puzzle. the main reason dna is not found in the sexual assault include the use of a condom, the person cannot produce sperm or had a vasectomy. the dna was there but not detected. the attorney has based much of his defense on the lack of dna evidence.

>> tomorrow the defense begins to present its case. reporting live from towson, barry simms. >> baltimore city fire officials are looking for the source of the carbon monoxide leak that sent two people to the hospital. has backers were on the scene at 11:00 this morning on the 900 block of washington boulevard in southwest baltimore. two people suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. we are told none of the conditions were life- threatening. >> arctic air and a few flurries and snow showers, that is moving off the coast now and a major warming trend heading our way. radar imagery showing it moving out for most of this thursday. temperatures that started in the twenties this morning have formed into the 30's.

>> a messy water main break left many businesses with all services for much of the day. a 10-inch line broke right along the 2100 block. water in the area should be restored soon. >> in tonight's medical miller, it is something that health advocates have complained about for years. livestock has been said -- livestock being fed and to be honest. humans are becoming more resistant to it life-saving antibiotic, the fda is ordering farmers to limit the use of the antibiotic. is not the only class of antibiotics given, but it is a critical class for humans. it is used to treat pneumonia,

and salmonella and humans. some people are calling it a modest first that for the fda. a report by the american cancer society show that fewer people are dying of cancer. between 2004 and 2008 cancer death rate decrease to about 1.7% among adults. the reduction in death rates were seen in every ethnic group except alaska natives and american indians whose rates remain stable. it is always horrifying and heartbreaking, but it happens hundreds of tons a year when small children are killed or injured when a car backups' hitting them. often it happens at home. an advocacy group is calling for mandatory bacchant cameras for new cars. some people do not believe that is the best solution. -- mandatory back up cameras for new cars.

digits in the low teens all across the state of maryland. this morning it is not quite as cold by far. 26 for the low at bwi marshall today. 28 degrees up in new york city. all the way up into deep york. 70 degrees below zero yesterday and today 17 above. that is a 34 degree turn around. we ended up with temperatures climbing above normal today . 46 normal actbwi marshall and 46 at the inner harbor. record high is 69. i am not talking quite that warm, but it will be well above normal temperatures for friday and into saturday as well with the arctic air gone. partly cloudy skies to contend with across the region. we are looking at afternoon readings on to the eastern shore and adopted the coast. higher ebullitions of western maryland were there is some snow

on the ground. not all that called for this time of year. super cast shows partly cloudy skies expected overnight. we are not talking about bitter cold, we are talking about what is fairly average for this time of year. light winds, chilly temperatures and a partly cloudy sky. it should stay that way throughout the day tomorrow. much warmer temperatures expected with sonny clouds mixed and with a breeze. we will tap into some unusually warm air. we would not be surprised at all if a couple of locations away from the bay, water temperatures are a little chilly. we could see highs approaching 60 degrees. a 1 foot shot. you could see water temperatures at the upper thirties, right on the shore of the bay will be noticeably cooler than inland locations. 45 degrees tomorrow. eight snow shower could redevelop on saturday.

a cold front moving its way through on saturday. east of the mountains, 50's for a couple of days and that will cool off for the second half of the weekend. it may trigger a sprinkle. 58 of the lower eastern shore tomorrow and 54 on saturday. you can see the war but the weather pattern coming our way. behind this war affront in indianapolis right now. 68 degrees at rapid city, 66 in kansas city, 49 and cincinnati. all of this is pushing to the east that will come in our direction on that sock westerly breeze tomorrow. we will see quite a bit of sunshine tomorrow into saturday. saturday night as the front slides through, maybe a sprinkle. it will be a touch cooler but no arctic air over the next seven days. 53 degrees and maybe a sprinkle saturday evening. partly cloudy and a touch cooler.

a fire in east baltimore. it just happened after 9:00 on north lakewood ave. firefighters were able to control the blaze, however barry hines died of smoke inhalation. --mary hines died of smoke inhalation. because of the fire remains under investigation. a utah man was arrested after a dispute left his with injuries. he has been charged with attempted first and second- degree burglary, assault and reckless endangerment. he was visiting his family when he struck his father and injured his knees during an argument. he is being held on $100,000 bail. >> our military will be leaner, but the world must know that the

temperatures will be running well above normal. i will not be surprised if we hit '60s and some parts tomorrow. it will be way above the norm. as it tracks east you can see it track dries up south of us. tomorrow almost feeling like springtime. southwest winds. son up at 7:27 and setting at two minutes before 5:00 in the afternoon. it will be chilly if you are out there on the day. air temperatures away from the bay will be quite mild but near the cooler waters it could be chile. 45 degrees in the mountains. east of the mountains basically dry weather going into the weekend. an outside chance of a sprinkle. highs tomorrow well up into the 50's and not pulling off at all until late saturday night.

near 60 on the lower eastern shore tomorrow at 54 tomorrow. mild weather through the first half of the weekend and a little bit cooler on sunday. weather systems all of us could produce a little red on monday but we will see cloud cover it around the city and points north. a better chance for rain on wednesday. >> into nats consumer alert, a move similar to a recall general motors is asking the vault owners to bring their electric cars in for a battery issue. three batteries caught fire during federal safety tests. the fires occurred seven days to three weeks after a crash tests. all volt honors are being urged to return the car for several structural repairs. a lot of us entering 2012 are hoping things will be different for skyrocketing gas prices.

the worst prices could be worse to come is coming after what analysts say is the most expensive year on record. >> it is not as uncommon for prices to go up 90 cents which means we would break the record high. >> the highest prices predicted for may and june. we could see them go up a half cent to one penny per day. 11 news reported late last month that work at the plant is on hold. baltimore county is announcing and out reach initiative to help those people who are out of a job. and information fare will be held next thursday january 12 at the united steelworkers union hall. it will include presentations about unemployment insurance benefits and the career services. 11 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. the holiday season paid off for most retailers.

holiday sales were not as robust as 2010 but still finished on a high note. the stores with the best deals did the best business. >> the majority of retailers are bringing in the -- bringing in the new year thanks to holiday shoppers. >> the economy was a little better. i did a little bit better shopping than last year. >> sales were up this season 3.3% over all. stores have to go all out because consumers waited until the very end to spend. >> we have been calling it a white knuckle christmas. it came late and it was on sale. >> still on a budget shoppers looked to get the most for their dollar. >> i was shopping with discounts. i wanted to get all the discounts i could. >> there was a twist on stores that did well this season.
