[bell rings] >> little did these parishioners note that big and extraordinary news was in store for them at this friday morning mass. >> [inaudible] >> the historical announcement was made about the 72-year-old archbishop being elevated to cardinal friday. churchgoers were elated. >> i was glad, very happy. >> all things are possible. >> we knew it was coming eventually, and we shared the news, and we're delighted to be able to tell folks this. >> o'brien served as the 15th our pitch -- archbishop of baltimore until last august, when he was appointed to a higher spiritual leadership role. the areas have million

catholics, many attended his masses through the years. >> it makes me feel like part of the historical process at the church. >> when asked if there were surprised about o'brien being a part of the cardinal brother heard, and his work unanimous. >> no. >> no, not at all. i thought he would be. >> we knew this was going to happen eventually with his new assignment to rome. unfortunately, the archbishop will leave us to serve the universal church in supported the christians in the holy land. >> the monsignor also served as the victor general of the archdiocese adds that the new appointment is tremendous for the baltimore community. >> we have been blessed with very good archbishop's here. to have one of our archbishop's be named a cardinal, whether he remains here or moves on, i think it is a great testament to the stellar leadership that the holy father has sent to our archdiocese.

by word of mouth, not by police. on december 30, police confirmed two suspects attacked the unidentified victim, stole his phone and wallet, and then ordered him into his suv. they forced him to withdraw money from his account. police say they have several leads but have made no arrests a baltimore county man is sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder of a 16-year-old girl whose body has yet to be found. a 36-year-old jason grows it was found guilty of murdering the girl they met in a chat room, and arranged a meeting in march 2009, and they found that using cell phone records and interviews. prosecutors managed to overcome the fact that they never found the girl's body. ♪ >> today, 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. a nice trend we're setting. still early january, still the middle of winter. hard to believe today, with a

it is darned good, and if we can maintain that, we can get unemployment moving south in a big way. >> the economy added one + 6 million jobs last year and unemployment averaged 8.9%, down from 9.6% in 2010. that is good news for president obama and this election year. courts in the last year, there were two million private sector jobs created, which is not that. we're still not out of the woods. >> it is still a rough market for job-seekers. boeing has announced it is closing a facility in wichita, kansas next year, leaving more than 2100 people out of work because defense contracts are drying up of the national unemployment average and account people who have given up on finding work or those forced into part-time jobs. the national underemployment rate is over 15%. wbal-tv 11 news. >> next, details on a public memorial plant in honor of wbal radio talk-show host ron smith.

>> attorneys for utah doctor charged with murder for a botched abortion in cecil county are meeting with prosecutors. lawyers are asking prosecutors and police to be held in contempt for disclosing contents of a sealed indictment. dr. raley was arrested last month accused of transporting patients across state lines to form late term abortions in cecil county. his colleagues, a 52 -- 55-year- old, with extradition thursday, allowing it to be brought to maryland to face similar charges meanwhile in baltimore county, authorities have charged a man with attempted murder after he allegedly set both himself and his girlfriend on fire. according to charging document, back on november 22, joseph miller poured paint thinner on his girlfriend rose ann owens and set her on fire. miller was also injured when the flammable liquid spread to him and burned his leg. owens is in critical but stable condition.

>> in today's consumer alert, already at a record low, 30-year mortgage rates have fallen lower. the average rate of a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.91% this week, matching the record low reached two weeks ago. the 15-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.23%. although mortgage rates are low, the have done little to boost the economy. many americans say they are not able to take advantage of their rates or they have done so already. new jobs are coming to howard county as a food market prepares to open its newest store in columbia. they are recruiting full-time employees for the location set to open in mid-june. the positions range from entry- level management to customer service and cashiers that there are a wide range of culinary and

the atmosphere is set up right for that. that adds a little bit to the cloudiness filtering the sunshine. so we do not have a perfectly blue sky. but it is a very nice day. let's look at the current conditions as far as temperatures. annapolis, 59. cambridge, 55. boardwalk, 56. only 49 at edgewood. that is all right. 52 at westminster. farther south, to riches of getting closer to 60. for the north, further away from 6 to come closer to 50 degrees but only in the 40's in the mountains out to the west. i want to show you a black and white satellite image from a few hours ago some of those thin clouds overhead, you can see some of the jet contrails overhead. there is snow on the ground in the mountains to the west. the satellite picture does show that snow cover in garrett county and in west virginia. they will probably lose a little

bit of that today because of this warm temperatures. but there has been enough snow out there. earlier in the week it was cold enough that some of it stuck, so it shows up on a satellite image. here is a different image. here is the warm front allowing the warm air to come in duty to our north. it is nice and mild out there. there is a cold front in the midwest. the main ice storm connected to this is in the great lakes. the moisture will be limited to a nonexistent as it comes through on saturday. but we're on the warm side of everything, and it is very nice. warm temperatures displacing the cold air. only five degrees here right now. a big difference just in a few hundred miles to our north. very nice today, partly cloudy. unseasonably mild. 55 to 64 the high. southwest winds, 5 to 10 miles per hour. in the bay, 10 knots for winds.

futurecast shows the front coming through on saturday. there will get some snow in the mountains. it will probably pass through here dry saturday evening, maybe a sprinkle. something's out of us on monday its as close to maybe make a presentation on monday morning. our seven-day forecast of 58, today. 54 on saturday, and 47 on sunday. over the weekend, we stepped back on temperatures. but it looked dry. monday morning, there might be a brief morning mixed. cloudy skies. 45 is the height. a dry day tuesday. a larger storm wednesday and thursday. looks like a rain mixed. >> thank you so much. a new year's miracle for one montana family who recently suffered a terrible loss. mother, husband -- a husband died in an avalanche while cross-country skiing. the family thought their dog was also killed. but amazingly, the welsh corgi showed up at the hotel four days after the accident, the same

hotel or the family stayed before the avalanche. rescue workers reunited the dog with his family who cannot believe the news. >> i was just like, what? what happened? she was like, he survived. >> it was a willingness -- a nice moment, because we all had a moment of happiness. it was nice to share that. >> the wife survived the avalanche as well. the winter months are usually a time when hollywood slows the release of blockbuster films and text and to congratulate itself with honors and awards shows. with only one major release this week, we look ahead to what tinseltown may be congratulating itself for in 2012. ♪ >> perhaps the biggest trend you can expect in 2012 is one that began last fall. >> when the "llewellyn king" was released in 3d and made so much money, i think it set off a light bull. >> the idea, really smart duties. look for "beauty and the beast"
