patapsco shopping center early tuesday morning after a suspect is shot and killed by baltimore county and anne arundel county officers. the situation unfolded at around 2:00 in the morning wearing a baltimore county officer tried to pull over and the sun -- tried to pull over a nissan. another officer noticed the same vehicle on i-695 but it got away again. the same officer noticed the car had crashed in the southbound lanes of 95 and pulled over to investigate. there ended up being some sort of struggle. >> he was able to gain control of the officer's vehicle and fled the scene. >> the officers were later able to track down the cruiser to the parking lot of this motel 6, but

when they arrived at the notice the black-to be racing out of that parking lot and then stopped it. three people -- noticed that the black suv racing out of the parking lot. >> police believe it is the same individual. the individuals that were taken out of the suv are being questioned by homicide detectives. police officers did recover a hammer from the vehicle. baltimore county, now joined by anne arundel county police, gave chase until the suv crashed on annapolis road. that is when officers fired on the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at shock trauma. >> at this point -- as far as the officers involved, the baltimore county officers were all veterans with 19, 18, and

five years' experience. the officer from anne arundel county was also a veteran with 19 years' experience. a possible suspect gun was never found. all four of those officers are on routine administrative leave. one final note, police investigators say by working together through all three jurisdictions in using radio communication they were able to avoid a high-speed chase, which they felt could have resulted in other industries are possible deaths. lowell melser, wbal-tv 11 news. >> breaking news right now in the north point area of baltimore county where we are monitoring a domestic incident we are told has now turned violent. captain roy taylor has just arrived over the scene. >> this is burt shark over east baltimore county where --, berkshire were possibly 3:00 in

the initial call was of a woman in her 30's that was stabbed multiple times. apparently was some kind of domestic dispute between a man and woman and they are calling impact a cutting at this location. the victim was transported from this location to the hospital. baltimore county police still remain on the scene conducting an investigation. >> in season batted tonight, the theft of a lawn tractor leads to the death of a man during the getaway -- in cecil county tonight. >> the thief attempted to steal a lawn tractor priebus asked -- smashed the gate and drove under to escape. barry simms is live in cecil county with the latest on that investigation. >> the thieves did not get very far with what they were trying to steal pretty investigators did not have to travel far

because the crime happen right across the road from the state police barracks. the grand opening for this new lowe's home improvement store does not happen until thursday. no customers have arrived yet, but the store has already become a target for thieves. >> an employee at the lowe's store which has not open yet saw five suspects in dark, hooded sweat shirts in a pickup truck loading a john deere tractor from the back of their lot. police say one of the suspects died just a short distance away. state police a 35-year-old david rowland of elkton -- as a truck collided with the car. it is not far from out 272. according to investigators, the accident happened moments after

the attempted theft. employees at loews closed the gate trying to stop the crime, but the suspect was determined to get away. >> he rammed the gate several times and were able to push their way through the gate. as they move through the gate, the law more came off the truck. they calotte -- the lawn mower came off the truck. one man received minor injuries. the impact ejected david rowland from the truck into the ditch and he died from his entered -- from his injuries. police are reviewing surveillance tape from area businesses as they search for clues. >> they are continuing the investigation, hoping for four suspects. they are not sure if they are all male, but we believe several of them are. there may be a female involved as well. >> court records show david rowland was convicted in 2003 of

theft and burglary. he was convicted again in 2011 of theft and was on probation. he was going to be on probation until september of this year. the state police are asking for anyone with the permission about the crime to give them a call. reporting live from cecil county, barry simms, wbal-tv 11 news. >> some breaking news right now, a maryland state police spokesperson tells us that both drivers involved in that democrats on route 50 over the weekend or driving under the influence of -- involved in that deadly crash. cut teenager was driving for 50 miles in the wrong lane before it crashed into a bmw. all three teenagers in the car were also killed. according to preliminary toxicology reports, the drivers of both vehicles, 19-year-old

britney and walker and terry wayne davis were driving under the influence. >> fire officials and city are investigating the cause of an intense late afternoon blaze that had firefighters performing certain rescue operations in northeast baltimore. skyteam 11 headcount heavy smoke and flames around 2:30 this afternoon. crews were able to quickly control the blaze and researching the dwelling for anyone inside. at this hour, there are no reports of any injuries. city investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a two- alarm blaze in northwest baltimore monday night. crews responded to the 5400 block of maple avenue around 7:45 last night. they said they encountered heavy smoke and flames on the first and second floors of the dwelling. fire officials tell us no one was injured. >> unseasonably mild finish to

an unseasonably mild month of january. temperatures soaring. the normalise 42 degrees today. it is 66 degrees downtown, can and 50 in four western maryland in the higher elevations. most of the lower 48 is unseasonably mild. you have to go to way northern maine where it is 12 degrees in caribou. some snow in northern maine, but we will keep an eye on most rain showers to the south. there is bitter cold or the air in north america, but is go way up in alaska. 62 degrees below zero in alaska. 31 below in fairbanks. will any of that cold air come this way this winter? we will check out the extended forecast and a few minutes. >> the debate over legally recognizing same sex marriage in maryland took center stage in annapolis today. those for and against the legislation filled the committee room for a marathon hearing on the issue. david collins managed to find

that cholesterol lowering drugs may not work as well in women. researchers at boston's massachusetts general hospital looked at studies involving more than 140,000 women. the researchers found that in both men and women, staten significantly cut the risk of heart attack and death. the manufacturer of the very popular brazilian blowout horsetrading product will now have to warn stylist and users that its products do release formaldehyde gas, which could cause cancer. the company had advertises products as being free of formaldehyde, but according to a new study, those products actually released a significant amount of the formaldehyde gas. the company agreed to pay $600,000 in penalties for failing to notify customers and stylist that its products contain chemicals that may cause cancer. the number of thyroid cancer

cases has increased by about 6.5% in recent years. doctors are not really sure why it is on the rise. doctors point out that it did point out that family history is a risk factor. it is more rigid three times more common in women than men. corot's man also play a role. according to the american cancer society, the five-year survival rate is 97%. you may have seen this on the dr. oz show. it is recommended that women wear a thyroid shield for dental x-rays and possibly win having a mammogram. the doctor says any radiation you can avoid is good. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> we will finish up january with another day in the '60s. the fourth time this month the temperature has topped 60

degrees. up to 66 officially at the airport and 68 at the inner harbor. it has been an unseasonably mild month of january. normal is only 42. one of the interesting features in this warm up in january, we are not setting records, we are just deadly above normal. 69 was the record set in 1947. four degrees above zero. where does it stack up as far as the war as january's in baltimore? not even the top 25. so far, preliminary reports indicate we will have an average temperature of 38.2. that comes in 26 plays on the list of all-time morris januaries. the warmest ever was 1932, 7.4 degrees average temperature. this one will alboin as the 26

warmest on record. look at the cooling effect on the bay. the naval academy is a chilly 48. cambridge at 61 degrees, temperatures warm even out into the western maryland mountains. a normal high temperature is 42. we probably will not get down to the normal high for the low tonight in many areas. most of the nation, the january thought is under way. caribou, maine, 10 degrees with a winter storm warning in effect. you will get some snow up that way. the bitterly cold air is in western canada and alaska. 62 degrees below zero this morning, one of the all-time cold as january's ever for many parts of alaska. that is where the cold as, and we are on the warm side of the pattern. ran scattered showers, up into the ohio valley. that will push into the mid atlantic tomorrow. hit and miss showers, not a

obama administration is trying to remind students of a program it says will help forgive those loans. education reporter tim tooten is live in the newsroom with that story. >> a few years ago, the u.s. department of education launched a public service loan forgiveness program. the government agreed to forgive the balance of federal loans of students agreed to work full- time in public-service jobs. jobs like law-enforcement, public health, and administration. it was a timely lunchtime topic at the university of maryland baltimore campus. >> does the accumulation of debt influence a career path? i don't think any of us wants that to be the way it is. >> especially a maryland law student who took part in the panel discussion. >> i will leave here next year

fought with an officer before he was eventually shot and killed. police tried to pull over a nissan in baltimore county and it did not stop. police tracked the suspect to locations in the city, eventually firing deadly shots. at this hour, no suspect on has been recovered. maryland state police are still searching for four people involved in the step that ended in the death of one of the suspects. happen at a lowe's home improvement store in northeast monday evening. the thieves attempted to steal a lawn tractor but as they were fleeing the scene, other stolen pickup truck collided with another car. 35-year-old david rolle and was ejected in killed. the other suspects left the scene. it was breaking news at the top of the hour, a preliminary investigation into this weekend's quadruple fatal crash revealed that the drivers of both vehicles were under the influence.

export officials are still trying to identify victims at the deadly crash near gainesville this weekend. it is being blamed on poor visibility caused viking bought and smoke from a nearby fire. -- caused by smoking and fog. there are questions about why the highway was reopened sunday morning after being closed because of the poor visibility conditions from the fire itself. fire crews in miami dade county have been busy all day long battling a vicious brush fire that has already devoured about 30 acres of land. the blaze started monday afternoon. officials had to cut power to about 700 homes to help firefighters. one firefighter has been rushed to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. no word on when they will have the flames under control. a connecticut man is recovering tonight after car crashed into

experts here in maryland, it is warmer than usual for january, but that is not the case in other parts of the country. alaska is in the deep freeze. they are dealing with the coldest winter on record. the town of fairbanks hit 51 degrees below zero. further inland, it has ranged from -52 -62 degrees of the last three days, getting close to the record of -78. tow trucks are so busy helping people with dead car batteries, it can take up to four hours to get service. central new york, people may not be able to make it out of their houses. 2.5 feet of snow fell in and around the syracuse area sunday. forecasters are calling for another one to 3 inches to fall overnight. >> and don't you feel guilty, we are enjoying such great weather?

what has been remarkable about this one is the long stretch. 42 the normal life, 69 the record high. we are a little below record levels -- 40 to the normal high. preliminary reports not indicate the average temperature will be 38.2. that is short of the record. the warmest january, 1932. here were around really warm decade. really warming january in 1937 and 1933. the current temperature in alaska is 39 below zero, 30 below zero in fairbanks. the afternoon highs or 20 to 30 below zero. mindboggling if youl think about it. 10 degrees around caribou,

maine. even bismarck, north dakota is 49 degrees right now. 73 in phoenix, 68 in el paso, and here temperatures are in the 50's and 60's. 48 in annapolis at the naval academy. lows tonight will be warmer than the typical high for this time of year in most areas. the clouds are on the leading edge of this unsettled weather to the south and west. showers will be speeding through the mid atlantic tomorrow. some hit and miss scattered showers from time to time. lingering into 30 will -- thursday morning. southern maryland, the lower eastern shore down to richmond and norfolk will get some rain thursday morning. it may miss us entirely. by friday, lots of sunshine is expected, and a little bit cooler. still way above normal tomorrow with wesleyans at 8-15.
