good morning. is time running out? an alarming new report this morning that israel could be planning to attack iran over its growing nuclear program, and it could happen in a matter of months. monster blizzard, a major winter storm bearing down on colorado, kansas and nebraska. this morning, schools are closed, hundreds of flights are cancelled and some areas are bracing for up to two feet of snow. and countdown to super bowl xlvi, two titans of the gridiron
quote
7:01 am
the new york giants and the new england patriots, ready to face off in a rematch. it could be the most watched event in history. will the game live up to expectations? will madonna deliver at halftime? and which ads will be worth the money? we're getting the party started today in indianapolis, friday, we're getting the party started today in indianapolis, friday, february 3, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television welcome to a special edition of "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer inside studio 1a. ann is in indianapolis, a town with a serious case of super bowl fever. good morning. >> and how, matt.
7:02 am
i thought i'd come to see what all the fuss is about. indianapolis is known locally as nap town because it was a sleepy little city, but as you can see it's wide awake this morning. we are just surrounded with hoosier hospitality. we are in pan am plaza named for the 1987 games. this week it is super bowl village, a fun zone for fans near the stadium as the city gears up for the big game. coming up, we'll hear from madonna on her halftime show and also show you her little salsa at her news conference on thursday. we're also going to have -- there you go -- some first looks at the super bowl ads that are so highly anticipated. if that wasn't enough, we actually have a live convert coming up from here. gym class heroes and maroon 5's adam levine will be performing.
7:03 am
the crowd likes the idea but maybe the real star from here is mr. al roker. he's joining us also this morning. [ cheers and applause ] >> big cheer for him. matt, you have a lot coming up from new york. >> i do, ann. thank you very much. we'll have new developments to the story we have been covering of more than a dozen girls at a school with tourette's syndromes. now a 36-year-old woman is suffering tics as well and she wants to know if it's relate to a train derailment in that town decades ago. we begin with escalating tensions over iran's nuclear program. according to u.s. officials, defense secretary leon panetta believes there is a strong possibility israel will attack iran in the coming months. richard engel is in tel aviv. good morning, richard. >> reporter: good morning, matt. u.s. military officials are expressing very similar concerns to us. they say that the possibility of an israeli strike on iran's
7:04 am
nuclear program is about 50/50. some people say it's more like 70% likely and that the window of opportunity for israel to strike is anywhere from now to this summer. u.s. officials don't think that they will get advanced notice. they say israel will likely carry this out if it takes place with long-range bombers and rockets, but there is still an intense debate within this country, whether just a short bombing campaign -- perhaps three or four days -- would have a real impact on the program. >> one of the criteria the israelis imposed on themselves was could they create damage to the iranian nuclear program and then could israel with stand the inevitable counterattack. how are they preparing for the likelihood there? >> reporter: they are worried about this. just a few minutes ago i came from an israeli home. i was interviewing people who are dusting off their bomb shelter. they were making sure they have
7:05 am
the gas mask at the ready. they are not imminently concerned that something could happen, but with all of the reports -- and there are reports from israeli officials also saying israel can't wait forever, that the military option might be necessary. so israelis are taking precautions already from now. there is a debate on how much impact it would have. some israelis say a strike on these hardened sites in iran which iran says are strictly for peaceful purposes could only set the program back a year or two and that it isn't worth it. that it's better to have a sabotage campaign and keep on economic pressure. >> there is word coming out of egypt this morning that two american tourists have been kidnapped there on a trip there. what do you know about that? >> we have spoken to the local police chief. what happened is they were traveling, five americans in a car e between st. catherine's and sharm el sheikh.
7:06 am
they were apparently kidnapped by local tribes, bedouins. three of the americans were released and a tribal leader says the other two are being held by one of the biggest tribes in the area and it appears negotiations are under way. it doesn't appear to be an al qaeda-style kidnapping but a tribal grievance the americans got caught up in. >> richard, thank you very much. it's six minutes after the hour. here's ann. >> all right, matt. thanks. here at home a reminder that winter is far from over. a major blizzard is bearing down from colorado to nebraska. the weather channel's mike seidel is in englewood, colorado, with more. good morning. sounds like a huge storm. >> reporter: it is. considering how little snow we have seen across the country, denver is one of the few spots that comes into the storm running above average in snowfall. the only other town that comes to mind is midland, texas.
7:07 am
it's snowing and blowing this morning. some of the foothills already have had 15 inches and roads and schools are being impacted. travel is okay. they are trying to keep the roads clear ahead of the heavy snowfall rate of more than an inch an hour. in denver because they are expecting more than a foot of snow they are putting plow blades on 4 x 4s and garbage trucks to keep streets open. denver public schools are closed. most other communities followed suit. at the airport, just over 200 flights out of a daily schedule of 1,700 have been scheduled. major airlines, united states, frontier and southwest have the usual travel waivers if you are stuck and can't get out today. we'll look at i 80 and i-70 for shut-downs. most of the snow will not get to the ski resorts. >> that's too bad.
7:08 am
mike seidel, thank you very much. say trooi to stay warm. thank you. al, one of our colleagues said it was 52 degrees and sunny yesterday in denver. what flipped the switch? >> it's a big, big, vigorous storm. in fact, behind the storm we have the snow ahead of it. thunderstorms and tornadoes to talk about. as you can see, this is a wide view. you see the tornado watch texas into oklahoma. we have tornado warnings in southern texas and parts of louisiana. let's zoom in and show the snow. you can see it's getting itself together. this is a vigorous storm going on for the next 48 hours as it pulls out of colorado and heads spo the central plains it will be bringing behind it snow, blowing winds, winds over 30 miles per hour. ahead of it, heavy rain and thunderstorms. a possibility of tornadoes, damaging wind and damaging hail as well. snowfall amounts anywhere from a half foot to a foot and a half
7:09 am
of snow. rainfall from parts of louisiana, mississippi up into kansas. we are talking two to four inches of rain and some of it could be heavy causing flooding. now back to ann. >> al, thank you so much. we'll get to the forecast in a moment. now back to matt in new york. >> thank you. now to the presidential race and an apology from mitt romney following his controversial remark about the poor. this as he enjoys a new endorsement from donald trump. peter alexander is in reno, nevada. good morning to you. >> reporter: it played out like a scene in donald trump's own reality show. there they were together, side by side, the billionaire and multimillionaire trading compliments. trump said he was swayed because of romney's performance in recent debates. but romney's words have got him in trouble lately. >> it was a misstatement. i misspoke.
7:10 am
>> reporter: mitt romney now admits he messed up. this morning he hopes to end the controversy he caused with these seven words. >> i'm not concerned about the very poor. >> reporter: thursday night in an interview with the face to face with john ralston he gave this explanation. >> you do thousands of interviews and now and then you get it wrong. i misspoke. >> reporter: romney urged supporters to help him regain momentum. >> it would be helpful the if nevada would give me a boost going on. >> reporter: earlier romney accepted the endorsement of tea party favorite donald trump. >> it's my real honor and privilege to endorse mitt romney. >> reporter: the event was short, lasting barely seven minutes, but sweet for romney. >> there are some things you can't imagine happening in your life. this is one of them. >> mitt is tough, smart, sharp. he's not going to allow bad
7:11 am
things to continue to happen to this country that we love. >> reporter: there was plenty of vegas-style hype surrounding the endorsement. several media outlets reported based on sources in the newt gingrich campaign that trump would back the former house speaker. >> i'm watching in amazement. >> why? >> some people have a knack of gathering attention. >> you're talking about donald trump perhaps? >> the donald is a force of his own. >> would you like that force on your side? >> how are you? >> reporter: trump spoke with savannah on "today." >> he has not resonated. >> you said you're a better candidate because you're richer. >> not so much a candidate. i'm much richer than he is. that doesn't make me better at all. >> reporter: the endorsement of
7:12 am
a billionaire with this as his signature line. >> you're fired. >> i like being able to fire people. >> reporter: gave the democrats new fodder. >> they both like firing people and have made millions doing it. >> reporter: romney is trying to get back on track in nevada where polls show him with a 20% lead at this point. it's a state he won four years ago. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." chuck todd is nbc's political director. good morning. >> good morning. >> the tourist slogan for vegas is what happens in vegas stays in vegas. is this a one-day event or does the endorsement of trump have meaning for mitt romney? >> talking to romney adviser it is feeling was we'd rather have people with us than against us. trump gets a little bit of attention. whether he does it now, talks about a candidate down the line i think they would rather it be
7:13 am
for their side. they think he has a little tea party appeal and he can help them fund-raise. i don't think you will see mitt romney bringing him to battleground states in the fall, but right now it gives him a bump. >> what about the timing? much has been made over the fact that he stands next to a billionaire the day after he made a gaffe concerns the very poor. couldn't the romney campaign have said, look, we appreciate the endorsement. could we hold off and do it a few weeks down the road? >> you would think. i think there was an aspect that was ham-handed. you had mitt romney saying, i have been success, but not as successful as you. that doesn't help with the down with the people tour over the coming weeks. he has to work with this. they are looking at the longer game which is fund-raising, tea party credentials which is what they need. >> rick santorum gave an interview and said, quote, what donald trump does isn't for
7:14 am
anybody else but donald trump. be careful what you wish for. do you expect romney to take this endorsement and immediately begin to distance himself from donald trump? >> i do. the way this went down. the fact that there was only one state you would be semi-comfortable doing this in was las vegas. you can almost get away with it because it's vegas and having a showman on your side there is less weird than in f you did it in ohio, florida or somewhere more meaningful. i will be shocked if we see mitt romney and donald trump standing together in september and october, assuming mitt romney is the nominee. >> looking at polling out of nevada where the caucuses will be held, mitt romney with a 20-point lead. do you see anything in the numbers or on the calendar to spell good news for newt gingrich now? >> not at all. particularly in nevada, it will be hard. there is a large mormon population. mitt romney did well here
7:15 am
before. ron paul has been well organized here. frankly, the state's republican party is still getting used to the idea of caucusing. i think turnout will be a question mark. nobody's sure what the hours are of the polling places. there's already issues there. you have observant, high -- big time jewish activists inside the republican party who don't want to vote during the day tomorrow. sheldon adelson, the big donor of newt gingrich. i think you are not going to see a big turnout. i'm curious to see what happens tuesday. there are caucuses where rick santorum could do well. that will be interesting to see if conservatives rally around him. >> the news out of washington and the defense department, david, that u.s. officials now fear israel may attack iran's nuclear facility sooner rather than later. what's the worst case scenario for the u.s. in this and the obama administration? >> well, that somehow the u.s. is drawn into it, backing up our
7:16 am
ally, israel, depending upon the nature of the strike it will be destabilizing for the region if not lethal for parts of israel should something like this happen and the reverberations in terms of nuclear proloviferation and u.s troops moving out of afghanistan and almost completely out of iraq. those reverberations, the administration has to keep on eye on. >> thank you very much. a programming note now. newt gingrich will be one of david's guests on a special super bowl sunday edition of "meet the press." now over to the news desk with natalie for the headlines of the morning. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. the head of the susan g. komen for the cure foundation is defending her decision to cut funding to planned parenthood even as top komen officials resign in protest. this as criticism mounts against the cancer charity and supporters rally around the reproductive health
