of confidence, and this i'm going to take it to the white house. >> reporter: in front of his most enthusiastic crowd yet, mitt romney tightened his grip on frontrunner status, largely ignoring the rest of the republican field and using his victory speech to blast president obama. >> this president began his presidency by apologizing for america. he should now be apologizing to america. >> reporter: in a state crippled bys housing crisis, as well as the nation's highest unemployment, nearly 13%, rom fly challenged the president on keeping his promise of lowering the unemployment rate to 8%. >> this week he's been trying to take a bow for 8.3% unemployment. not so fast, mr. president. this is the 36th straight month with unemployment above the red line your own administration drew. >> reporter: the romney campaign is increasingly confident -- >> thank you so much for your help >> reporter: -- their win here demonstrates growing support within the base of the republican party. exit polls show romney had his

8:07 am
is for newt gingrich. if he's going to make the case that he's the ideological leader of the conservative wing of the republican party then you look at those results and you say, well, maybe not so fast. so this is really the case that gingrich is making. and when romney can put together numbers like that, it's a very strong rebuttal. >> is it that these republicans, these tea partiers and very conservative voters are taking a new look at mitt romney? or are they surrender and saying, look, this guy's going to be the eventual nominee, we might as well get behind him? >> i think it's those two things and i'd add a third and it is the sheer gap by which he wins in a state is going to sweep in some of those voters. and you're going to see a little bit more support among those who are very conservative, including a lot of mormon voters who are in nevada, who would help to drive up that number. but i think you should also be looking for romney in the next couple of weeks, not to court establishment folks, but to court more tea party conservatives, more social conservatives. i think mike huckabee is a big name that he will try to talk to. michele bachmann. yeah, you saw donald trump this week. >> david, the challenge its

seems in the next couple of days and weeks for mitt romney is how do you run against an economy that is improving? the jobs numbers on friday were a good sign. the unemployment rate is down to 8.3%. so do you go out there and say things are terrible, even though statistics are showing voters that they're getting better? >> you know, it's very difficult. think of the, you'll be talking to president obama later today. he had to go out and say, well, it could have been a lot worse had it not been for what we did. that's very hard to prove. in mitt romney's case, he's got something difficult to prove, which is yeah the economy is doing better but barack obama made it a weaker economy than it should have been. how do you prove that? what would you have done? that's the position romney is in right now which is proving something that doesn't exist. how you would have accelerated recovery. and i think it's going to be difficult. i talk to white house official hops say that voters need some encouragement to support the president if they like him otherwise. if they support him otherwise. these kinds of surprisingly good jobs numbers, they provide some encouragement. >> who do you have this morning on "meet the press," david?
