family who was a star lacrosse player of university of virginia. tonight, his murder trial has begun. the trial of george huguely is our big story tonight. >> jury selection began today. he is accused of killing his ex- girlfriend, yeardley love. lowell melser has the latest. >> monday morning, just before 8:30, the family of yeardley love is escorted through a back door of the charlottesville circuit court house george huguely father quickly walked past cameras in the front. the defense attorneys " -- had more than 100 murder cases said that this particular case has a real limited jury pool as uva staff and students will certainly be struck. >> we will end up with a fair number and there may be some government employees and other people who have jobs that will allow them to be called for jury

service. >> throughout the day, the judge, commonwealth and defense attorneys poulterers. the popular -- defense attorneys polled jurors. they were asked if they had already borne an opinion because of media coverage or someone they knew close to the case. as far as what types of people both sides are looking for, the defense is looking for an open mind. >> what you want is to say, think i have heard some things about the case, but i will restrict my decision to what i hear and see in the courtroom. >> the common wealth, even though most of the publicity is in its favor, there are still challenges. >> the challenge for the prosecution is they want to get jurors who are sensitive to those issues but not so committed that they are excludable. >> because jury selection took so long today, the judge decided

to extend court hours until 8:00 this evening and then pick things up tomorrow morning at 9:00. hopes are that opening arguments will be able to happen sometime tomorrow afternoon, but then again, everything is subject to change. lowell melser, wbal-tv 11 news. >> you can see pictures from the courthouse, plus links to support scholarships in the memory of yeardley love. jury deliberations will continue tomorrow in the murder trial of lee stephens, the inmate accused of killing a state corrections officer david mcguinn. he was stabbed to death at the house of correction in jessup back in 2006. if convicted, stephens could face the death penalty. >> the former employee of an end run county dennis was in the rest of her life in prison after

pleading guilty to his murder. shontay joyner hickman entered the plea this morning in the killing of dr. albert ro. back in 2006, he was found beaten to death inside his office. >> she realized that beyond the penalty she has to be paid, there may be as pure to one that lays before her as well. she felt bad about her involvement in this. >> police found that she had stolen 17 dozen dollars worth of checks and deposited them in her account. a fingerprint led them to her cousin, davantay vietor -- dante jeter. >> the author of those controversial robocalls that went down in february 10 will be back in court tomorrow.

prosecutors claim he tried to suppress the african-american vote with the call that suggested the election was over before the polls had closed. hinson argues that the charges are unconstitutional and the case against him should be thrown out. >> we basically, the state made a mistake in bringing this case, and we will prove it. >> call schurick has already been convicted on similar charges. he is scheduled to be sentenced next week. >> a man shot in east baltimore early tonight has died from his injuries. we brought it to you with breaking news this afternoon at 5:00 when police were called to east preston street were a victim had been shot several times. he was taken to a hospital where he died. there is no word tonight on his identity and no arrests have been made. the search is on for gunman's night after shooting in west baltimore around 1:00 this afternoon.

we are told a city police officer on patrol found a man lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. there is no word on the victim's condition or motive. baltimore city is preparing to roll out an on-line crime reporting service designed to spare crime victims a long wait for patrolmen and save money at the same time. kerry cavanaugh joins us live at city hall with the latest on that. >> the bill was officially introduced by city councilman tonight, but it turns out the program is already in the works. the idea is to make it easier to get a police report, especially if you need to file an insurance claim for property damage paris is aggravating to discover you have been the victim of a crime like a tire slashing. even more so if you have to wait hours for a police officer to respond to the call. >> we find citizen sometimes waiting hours just to give a simple report so they can give it to their insurance company. >> " moore's city is preparing

spring. you will be able to access it through the existing page. you still have the option for calling 911 for any of those crimes listed on the web page. >> you can add another $30 million to the state's books, thanks to to maryland casinos. the hollywood casino in perryville generated nearly $9.80 million in january. officials say the slot casino and ocean downs generated about $3.10 million last month. last year that brought $82 million to the state. >> as maryland lawmakers consider raising the gas tax, some experts are predicting the gas price to rise to at least $4 per gallon by may. >> kai reed is live in north baltimore with the latest on rising gas prices. >> gas prices have jumped 5 cents in maryland in the past week, a tin since nationwide.

the double murder suicide sunday of father and his two young sons in washington state. >> the dick -- the details are difficult to say but the pierce county medical examiner says the boys died of smoke inhalation and some other horrible injuries. >> we know that the children are with their mother, and they are safe. >> small comfort to the family whose two young grandson's were killed by their own father. investigators say josh powell intentionally set the fire inside this home and killed himself along with seven year- old charlie and five year-old braden. >> they found two 5 gallon cans of gas. one was with the bodies and the other was spread throughout the house. >> investigators say moments before the blast, josh sent out multiple e-mails to family and friends.

>> there is nobody that we have been able to determine would have had any type of notice to have done anything. he said i am sorry, i cannot live without my boys, and that is it. >> it is the latest twist in it to your drama in the search for his wife, susan howell. police labeled josh as a personal interest, but he had never been charged. he had been locked in a bitter battle over custody. stephen powell was arrested on child pornography and voyeurism charges and remains in jail. meanwhile, at the cox family home, and into a room where the boys live is a reminder of their loss. >> we knew we were not going to bring susan back, but we are hoping to at least give the boys a chance at a good life. that has been taken away by their father killing them.

>> the medical examiner did release the information that those boys suffered some serious hatchet injuries that did contribute to their deaths. >> a bottle was thrown by an occupied demonstrator and an officer suffered an eye injury one and demonstrators threw a lee goodwill -- liquid filled coke bottle. the suspect arrest predict resisted arrest. -- the suspect resisted arrest. the u.s. has closed its embassy in syria's capital as violence in the country mouth. the move comes two weeks after the state department threatened to close the embassy last the syrian government protect their mission. the united states resolution calling for the president to step down failed after vetoes from russia and china. meanwhile, many prefer the current violence could plunge syria into a civil war.

wednesday. on the lower eastern shore, mild tomorrow, maybe a sprinkle or floor -- flurry around ocean city wednesday. low pressure tracks along the front tomorrow night and that brings the chance for a little wintry weather. a chance for some snow across the northern suburbs on wednesday. scheduled to linger into the wednesday evening rush hour. then it slips on to the south and skies clear on thursday. as the system booster on wednesday, the potential for light accumulation. the ground is pretty warm and that will probably melt most of it. mixed with rain sell the baltimore, so no accumulation expected at this time. it is a little bit of a taste of winter could we have not had much of that the past couple of months. lots of sunshine, then the front goes through tomorrow night. much chillier on wednesday with that chance for snow.

when people say that tom brady has the prettiest wife on the new england patriots, i don't think they are talking about her language. on her way out of superbowl to let fans get the best of her. she was not aware someone was videotaping her. she said my husband cannot [beep] throw and catch the ball at the same time. she did not comment on her husband getting a safety on the first tab or throwing an interception in the second half. the pittsburgh steelers will reportedly hired todd haleigh to take over their offense. he has a little bit of knowledge about the steelers. he worked as offensive coordinator for the arizona cardinals. it all comes back to the super bowl.
