son and one other girl to their homes before the incident, then stopped at a dollar store and bought some baby oil. the report says he then drove the girl to a parking lot where they watched christmas movies on his ipod before things got "weird." he removed her jacket, began touching her breasts and rubbing her back with baby oil. when he realized that the park was about to close, they drove to another parking lot where they watched more movies and he attempted to kiss her neck. she told police he stopped when she told him she was uncomfortable. he asked if she wanted to go home. she said yes, and he drove her home. >> the suspect is a mentor at her school. that is how she knows him. >> when the mother found out that he was removing her daughter from class, she became concerned, but was assured that the suspect was a good man and

had an excellent track record mentoring young girls and gaining their admittance to an elite high school. the mother says she and her family grew to trust the suspect. he even attended dinners at their home. >> city schools say he has never been a volunteer mentor counselor or employee with them although he does have children in city schools. breaking news first alert out of circuit court. the jury has determined an inmate convicted of killing a corrections officer is eligible for the death penalty. he was found guilty of the stabbing death back in 2006. it is the first case involving the death penalty since the law changed. barry sims is in annapolis gathering the details. he will have a live report at 5:30 p.m. >> a police officer is being

held without bail, accused of sexually assaulting a young girl. this is now the third time he has been charged with a sexual offense. he was first accused in march of 2008 of fondling a girl in the basement of his home. he resigned from the police department and his conviction was absolves. he was placed on -- and convicted of assault. he was placed on probation for five years. the second charges were eventually dropped. according to the latest documents, a 13-year-old girl says he tried to rape her back in december while visiting his home. police are now investigating the possibility of other victims. >> police have identified the body of a man found shot to death in north baltimore last week. he was killed just before a lemon o'clock thursday morning on a 29 hunt -- before 11:00 thursday morning. the case remains open and no arrests have been made.

taste of some precipitation tomorrow as temperatures try to warm up again in what has been an unusually mild winter. >> it is an ambitious goal for the city of baltimore. >> the mayor wants to grow the city by 10,000 more families over the next 10 years. in her state of the city address, stephanie rawlings'- blake announce how she wants to do it. >> she wants to combat the decline in city population by attracting 10,000 new families to baltimore over the next decade. she believes the key to accomplishing that is city schools, which means closing some, improving others, and breaking ground on new facilities. she is dedicating $300 million in bonds to fixing schools. that is only about 25% of what the school ceo believes is necessary.

huguely's apartments. things picked up when the doctor who performed yeardly love's autopsy took the stand. day six was consumed with evidence found on george huguely's body and in his apartment. the jury was given a copy of a letter found in yeardly love's bedroom, written by george huguely. the charlottesville forensic supervisor first took the stand who collected fingerprints and took pictures of blood stains and spatter found in love's apartment. he also took dna samples from george huguely's apartment, including bloodstains on his shower curtain. testimony followed considering photographs of injuries to his arms and hands, as well as more dna evidence gathered from his apartment, including swapping of his bathroom and kitchen.

the chief medical examiner took the stand and testified that he performed the autopsy on yeardly love. they went through countless those documents in his opinion of how she died. most showed bruises all over her body including major bruises to her left forearm, oval bruises on her chest that could have been formed by fingers, and bruises on her boss talks and lower back. the area connecting her job to her -- jaw to her neck reflected blunt force trauma. >> he is still on the stand as we speak. we will have an update tonight at 6:00. wbal-tv 11 news. >> new details are surfacing tonight about the death of legendary singer whitney houston. >> we will have more on that investigation and take a look at

>> tonight, the impact of whitney houston's death continues to be felt all around the globe. the singer was honored at the grammys last night, and today we are learning more about her shocking death. >> the los angeles county coroner's office has announced that the body of whitney houston has been released to her family and sent to an undisclosed funeral home. as the world continues to mourn the loss of an entertainer with unparalleled talent, the coroner confirmed that investigators found prescription pill bottles in her room but are still looking into all causes of death. >> the person could have suffered a heart attack or an embolism. no matter what medications they were taking, we are not going to speculate.

nearly 20,000 women were included in the study. those exposed to higher levels of pollution experienced more decline in cognitive function. the air pollution levels in the study are seen in many areas of the united states. heart disease is the leading cause of death for both sexes, but when it comes to women and heart disease, a big concern for doctors is that women often ignore their symptoms. >> last september, donna fisher ross suddenly got very sick with symptoms that really frightened her, so much so that she thought she was having a heart attack. >> your chest is really tight. you are short of breath. >> she tried to ignore her symptoms and put off getting

increasingly cloudy, temperatures normal for this time of year. there is a winter weather advisory now that covers most of southern illinois, western kentucky and parts of alabama. the warning affects northeastern arkansas. there is a mixture of rain, sleet and snow cutting through the middle part of the country. all of this is inching in our direction, but it is showing signs of rapidly weakening. as its tracks to the east, it will encounter the mild air that is now on the coast. there will be only a hint of some precipitation in our region tomorrow. lots of clouds expected. maybe a brief flurry or snow shower in the morning and are rain sprinkle in the afternoon or evening, but not a whole lot of precipitation as we work our way through tomorrow. thursday is when our next robber

>> live, local, late-breaking, this is wbal tv-11 news at 5:00. 11 news at 5:00 in high definition continues now. >> it was breaking news at the top of the hour. an inmate convicted of killing a corrections officer determined eligible for the death penalty. a jury made the decision late this afternoon in the trial of lee stevens. >> this makes stevens the first person eligible for the death penalty under maryland's new guidelines. he had the option of a judge or a jury determining his fate.

>> the law requires him to make that determination, whether he wants a judge or a jury. stevens decided that the same jury that convicted him of first degree murder would determine his sentence. the jury determined that 33- year-old lee stevens is eligible for the death penalty. jurors found him guilty last thursday of killing a corporal at the maryland house of corrections in july, 2006. >> it has been almost six years since this tragic event occurred. we just wanted as a union to represent the officers, to make sure we are able to see this come to a conclusion in deference to the families and the unions -- and the communities they lived in. none of us had any doubt that this individual was going to be found guilty. all the evidence that was out

there -- is just, why did it take so long? >> death penalty cases usually take a long time. there are numerous pre-trial motions, and in this case, some of the issues went to the appellate court to be settled. stevens was convicted of sneaking out of his self and stabbing the officer more than a dozen times. lamar harris was also accused of participating in the crime. blood and dna evidence linked stevens with the murder. blood was found on his boots, a t-shirt and boxer shorts. the prosecutor asked, do we have enough certainty to consider the death penalty? no one saw this from a close distance. no one believes the lighting conditions were perfect. no weapon was recovered. prison safety is still a major worry. >> our biggest concern still is

making sure we have the correct resources and staffing in order to have a safe environment for everyone involved, to make sure these officers go in and come back to their families day in and day out. >> the jury also considered stevens a principal in the crime, believing he committed the murder by his own hand. he could get a death sentence, life in prison without parole or life with parole. wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. here is a look at some of our other top stories at this hour. a baltimore man is behind bars, accused of molesting a middle school girl. he led her family to believe that he could help per get into a good high school by serving as her mentor, but now he is charged with sexual abuse and assault. police are concerned that there could be more victims. the murder trial of former

lacrosse player george huguely has entered week two of testimony. a police officer testified that george huguely had bruises and scrapes on his arms and knuckled hours after yeardly love's body was found. he said they were the result of playing lacrosse. he has pled not guilty to murder and other charges. if convicted, he could face life in prison. police are searching for two suspects in an armed carjacking in northeast baltimore. it happened on saturday around 1:00. a woman parked her car in hamilton hills community. she was approached by two men, one of them holding a gun. her car was found shortly after that. police are now looking for the vehicle the suspects were driving, a newer model marooned buick with tinted windows. anyone with information should contact the police.

mayor stephanie rawlings-blake has set a growth goal for the city of baltimore. today in her state of the city address, she said she wants to grow the city by 10,000 more families over the next 10 years. she plans to improve schools, hospitals and neighborhoods. she is also working to reduce property taxes with new initiatives in the city budget. >> a new report on the baltimore area housing market shows a drop in sales and inventory during the month of january, but things may be turning around. >> a month into 2012 and is still a buyer's market in the baltimore area. january numbers just released showed january sales dropped nearly 5% from january of last year. this local realtors says that

an investigation is under way into a car accident in north carolina that had a woman trapped in her bed for hours. it happened in the charlotte area. police were chasing this car as it crashed into a home where this woman was sleeping, trapping her in her bed. she suffered a few injuries, nothing life-threatening. investigators said they did find drugs and alcohol in the car, but at this hour, no charges have been filed yet against the driver. more human remains have been found in what appears to be a mass grave. the grisly discoveries were made over the weekend at an old well near the california town of lyndon. the deputy claims the remains of 10 or more victims were dumped during a killing spree back in the 1980's and 1990's. the search was put on hold today because of heavy rain, but

california, a pretty decent earthquake occurring out there in northern california, not far from the oregon border. the geological survey indicating that this was a magnitude five. sec -- 5.6. it struck at about 4:00 a.m. -- and about 4:00 eastern time. we had won a little over five magnitude here in august. you have a feeling of what they're dealing with. of course, they are used to these things in california. that is not huge, but a moderate sized earthquake a couple of hours ago in northern california. temperatures this morning reflect the retreating arctic air. 14 below zero. seven down around augusta maine. 20 atbwi marshall.

in charlotte, temperatures were in the teens this morning. now, with a decent warmup for the afternoon, tempters managed to get well above normal. steven zell -- stephensville is 43 degrees. western maryland has several inches of snow on the ground. that keeps temperatures near freezing. overnight tonight, we will see clouds increasing. with the blanket of cloudiness, it will not be that cold tonight. low temperatures will hold in the upper-20's-low-30's for most areas. we might get a brief snow shower west of baltimore in advance of the next system that is out in the middle of the country right now. it is showing signs of weakening as it approaches us, but weather advisories cover good parts of the mississippi river valley and

friday. there may be a storm trying to develop on the coast for presidents' day weekend. there is a chance of snow on sunday. >> in tonight's consumer alert, federal safety regulators are investigating reports of fires on the driver's side doors of chevy trailblazer suvs from 2006-2007. the highway safety administration says more than three under thousand vehicles could be affected by this. -- 300,000 vehicles could be affected by this. regulators began investigating forta camry is and rav 4's the same problem last week. you have probably noticed that gas prices have jumped in the past week. the survey of fuel prices puts the average price of a gallon of regular here in baltimore at

$3.56 per gallon. if that looks like, you are right, it is. this time last week we were paying $3.44 for regular, and that is higher than ever before for this time of year. in the meantime, gas buddy predicts that costs will skyrocket another $0.60 per gallon by late may. by then, the national average will be about $3.85 for a gallon of unleaded regular. this is blamed on the turmoil in the middle east and the expensive switched to the summer grades of gasoline. g e is planning to hire 5000 veterans as part of its hiring our heroes program. the company is partnering with the u.s. chamber of commerce to sponsor four hundred veterans jobs there's this year. ge also plans to double its number of intern's to more than 5000 as part of the president's
