heat for hundreds of bge customers in southwest baltimore as chris continue to work to repair a damaged gas main. that problems started with a water main break and grew worse from there. crews working on a broken water main damaged a nearby gas line early this morning. >> now, hundreds of customers are trying to figure out how to prepare their meals and heat their homes without natural gas for the next several days. kai reed joins us from southwest baltimore with the very latest. >> b d has a very big job on its hands. as to tropicana korea each affected structured report any injured aired at broken gas mains. now they have about foreign customers to go. -- the view from above only tells half the story cook. >> i have water but no gas. >> i don't have gas or water.

>> a piece of asphalt fail, forcing water into a gas line. now bge has to go door-to-door to shut off the gas to about 900 homes and businesses before they can get the problem fixed. >> we still have to get into each building, turn the gas off, -- now have about 400 customers to go. we are talking about hundreds of homes that we have to access. >> once the problem is fixed, they will return and turn the customers' gas back on. the entire process can take several days at least three while diana and her neighbors go without heat and a long list of other convenience is. >> i got my hot played out so i will be able to cook a little something. -- got my hot plate out.

harford county that have been at around 0:00 this afternoon -- it happened at around 4:00 this afternoon. a male employee was working on a tractor when the jack supporting it collapse, pinning him underneath. police have not released the identity of the victim. police are looking for a suspect who gunned down a man in east baltimore. he was shot through the window of a family dollar stores at around 6:00 last evening. the victim was taken to hospital, where he died. there is no word on what sparked that violence. >> more testimony in the murder trial of george huguely that must have been difficult for family and friends of yeardley love to hear. to medical experts took the stand, one of them who conducted the autopsy. they both agree that the cause of the brain injury they found in the 22-year-old senior was blunt force trauma to the head. they said she actually died from an irregular heartbeat,

most likely because of brain stem injuries that disrupted the flow of blood to her heart. they agree that alcohol and drugs she took 480 b, what present, did not contribute to her death. -- of drugs she took for add. george huguely's murder trial is revealing a pattern of violence throughout his relationship with yeardley love, a pattern that some psychologists believe is too often ignored in college relationships. kerry cavanaugh joins us live in the studio with more on that story. >> friends of george huguely and yeardley love testified that they knew the relationship was volatile. this version of george huguely

is hard to reconcile with testimony that paints him as a violent, jealous boyfriend, capable of killing yeardley love with his bare hands. his friends told jurors that the lacrosse players drank heavily to the point that they considered an intervention. witnesses characterize alcohol as the tipping point in their stormy relationship, sometimes triggering violent fights. a psychiatrist says the scenario is not unusual on college campuses. >> alcohol dissolves like sugar in hot water and you do things that when you are sober, you surprise yourself. >> the doctor is hopeful that her death will drive home the reality of domestic violence in college relationships. the issue is gaining more attention through website

was literally against the law when they met and had a child back in the 1950's. more than five decades later, they want something from the state. barry simms explains. >> picture early returns to the place that held her captive more than five decades ago -- shirley returns. she was indicted and arrested. her crime? getting pregnant by a black man. now at age 75, shirley and her 76-year-old husband john visit the women's jail and reflect on how their relationship has endured. >> i know it has been a long time. >> pictures help tell the story of their 53-year marriage.

back in 1956, hair and clothing styles were a lot different, and so were social attitudes about interracial couples. the indictment claims shirley and howard, who was a white woman, unlawfully suffered and permitted herself to be begot with child by a negro. the penalties for it -- the penalty she faced, 18 months of five years in prison. >> i was not about to deny that i was the father of the baby. >> john was a 25-year-old musician performing with the ban call the honey boys. today, shirley still ask questions. >> how this all came about, and why they pursued me and not other people, and things like that. i just could never get answers.

>> shirley spent one night behind bars before getting bailed out, but that was just part of the ordeal. their son was taken away from them and placed in an orphanage in a home for colored infants and children and spent nearly two years there. explain what it was like. >> my son was in st. elizabeth's for quite awhile. i just that every day to think about -- and cannot believe it. how to get him home. >> shirley's attorney argues that the organs of the law that landed her in jail dated back to 1663 and slavery. a later version -- they say the law had never been enforced until shirley's arrest. >> i think that time they wanted

to take shirley and make an example of her. >> shirley had to prove she was working, had a place to live, and was married, to get her son back. after basic training, john came back and the couple married in 1958. >> we had to go to d.c. to get married. >> a judge dismissed the case again shirley, something she said she never knew because the attorney told her not to come to court on that day. the law was declared unconstitutional in 1957. the impact of it was to estrange shirley from her family for years. she says her mother did not get to know the grandchildren, and john, gregory, and terry, until they were adults. the billings have suffered quietly, and now they are only seeking one thing.
