make progress in repairing gas service to residents in southwest baltimore after a line break halted service last week. the only homes still without service need repairs before service can be restored. they include some locations that have not been able to enter because no one is home. >> it has been an exciting time for catholics around the world and in maryland. there are 22 new cardinals to lead the 1.3 billion strong catholic committee. one of them is cardinal o'brien. >> almost 5000 of the faithful and the new cardinals gathered inside the papal auditorium. while they waited for the arrival pope benedict, the cardinals looked for and found familiar faces from home. there were a number of spontaneous expressions of song

the bill would add gender identity and sexual orientation to the existing human relations laws. those against it say they are concerned passage will lead to more problems. >> i am not worried about the transgendered. i know they are not dangerous. i am worried about the other people better going to dress up and pretend they are something they are not. >> men dressed as women getting into bathrooms and showers with women and children. >> supporters point to an incident that happened last april when a transgender woman was attacked when she tried to use the women's bathroom and baltimore county mcdonald's. >> a state senate committee could vote tomorrow on a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. friday, the house passed a bill by one more vote than required. opponents vowed to take the

measure to referendum if it is passed into law. last year, the senate passed a similar bill. the maryland celebrity chef is in annapolis fighting to keep funding for school breakfast programs. >> david collins had a seat at the table and joins us live from annapolis with more on the story. >> the governor increased funding to the program by more than $500,000. legislators have been asked to consider slashing that amount by half, but it would still be an increase in funding. the chef created quite a buzz in annapolis. he drew a crowd everywhere he went. he is here to use his celebrity status to fight budget cuts in public school breakfast programs. >> they have to be excited about being in school. if you are there with an empty stomach, it is not the right environment for learning. >> the governor put by vanity

thousand dollars in his budget for the project. -- the governor put five and $60,000 in his budget for the project. since 1998, participating schools offer students a free breakfast in the classroom. no one has to pay, regardless of family income. >> it is a few hundred thousand dollars. given the amount of, number of families that have indicated they are eligible for free and reduced lunch and breakfast programs, this could not come at a worse time. >> budget cuts of already reduced the number of students participating. the last evaluation found an increase in the percentage of students who scored at or above satisfactory achievement levels on tests. the decline in tardiness and 40% decline in the length of suspensions. the house budget committee will keep in mind that slashing the
