36 people killed in friday's tornado outbreak that saw more than 100 tornadoes touch down in 12 states, one of the worst-hit communities is henryville, indiana. 11 news reporter jay gray with this story. >> the night sky is mostly clear across tornado alley tonight. the ground below though is not. the darkness unable to hide the devastation that stretches for miles. the day after cleanup teams stormed the hardest hit areas sifting through debris. all that's left between lives splintered, twisted and crossed for miles. >> tragic, terrible. one minute you're here and the next you're gone. >> a tragedy that left deep, painful scoors at least across a dozen states. >> he was the greatest love of my life. >> sheryl picket's husband ron wasn't supposed to be home when the storms hit. >> he shouldn't have been here. he came home early from work because he didn't feel good and

wanted to take a nap. >> he died when a twister ripped apart their home and now sheryl, who had been planning a celebration for their 40th wedding anniversary. >> we were going to have a hell of a party. >> now instead she must prepare for a funeral. across tornado alley for many the only thing left to hold on to is each other and they understand. they are the lucky ones. >> we're all ok. that's all that matters. >> as they work through the haunting images of what happened here and the painful reality of what is left behind. many survivors will return in the morning to search through debris for any part of their lives of the storm left behind. jay gray, 11 news. back to you. >> those storms must have been a terrifying sight to see. let's check in with lowell melser. >> it's highly unusual to see to sort of tornado activity this

early in the season. if we do see things like this, it's usually in may, height of the tornado season. i want to show you what's left nft storm h.d. doppler, making its way through pretty much the deep south, moving through georgia, north carolina and south carolina. with it, some nasty thunderstorms. but luckily no tornadoes spawned in those parts at least in this part of the evening. very quickly want to show you a couple stats from the national weather service concerning this storm thraped through the midwest. tornadoes, 108 reports of tornadoes, high winds, 301 situations of high winds be look at that with the hail -- 441 storm reports when it came to hail. this is unprecedented stuff. we will take a closer look at it and your stain weather plus forecast in just a couple minutes. >> lowell, thank you. howard county police officer is recovering in the hospital tonight after being struck by a driver whom police say was drunk. officer terrence shepherd had

stopped another car a little before midnight on eastbound route 40 and 29 near ellicott city when his car was rear-ended, pushing the first car into him. 45 the 45-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence. police say oiv shepherd's injuries are not life-threatening. tonight a candlelight vigil for the historic cardinal givens high school. arch die bees closed the school down almost two years ago but yesterday it was announced st. ago necessary hospital -- st. agnes bought the sprort and that's not sitting well with students. >> deborah, many of cardinal gibbons alumni are questioning the decision to shut the school down. was it because the school was financially strapped or was it a valuable piece of real estate which could turn the archdiocese major profit? baltimore's hiss tore imhigh school may have shut its doors for good two years ago but former students both young and old are still heart broken over

the move. saturday night the school's alumni held a candlelight vigil for their beloved school for the second year in a row. >> it was a great school. best four years of my life, made a lot of friends here. i really enjoyed it and like a lot of folks just sorry to see school couldn't remain open. >> i don't want to sound pessimistic but the whole two years has been a joke. >> with heartbreak, some alumni were harboring bad feelings over st. agnes's announcement it's buying the 32-acre site. >> they had this thing planned out from the beginning. >> i think it was in poor taste. i feel again it could have been handled better. it could have been handled more up front and nibble putting your cards on the table. >> st. agnes hospital has planned its return to the partially boarded up school located on the city's southwest side into an office building and housing complex for employees. cardinal gibbons is one 1369 schools that the baltimore archdiocese closed in 2010 due to low enrollment and rising

operating cost. despite the ar diocese explanation, many alumni feel the plan was always to sell the school for profit. >> money is money. business is business. i guess they are doing what what they have to do. >> while many former students are not pleased with the news, others are grateful some parts of the school are being preserved, such as the school's baseball field. the very field where baseball great babe ruth once played. the cal ripken sr. baseball foundation is already working on plans to turn the baseball diamond into a youth development park, which good news for this former cardinal gibbons baseball player. >> i was happy to hear this. i love that field. >> we tried to reach out to st. agnes hospital to get their comments on purchasing the high school but they did not return our call in time of this newscast. however, recently a spokesman from st. agnes told 11 news they had no plans to buy the property back when the school closed at that time and that a lot changed with the economy since then. reporting in the studio, 11

news. >> reaction is coming in as john leopold's indictment of facing charges of misconduct. according to the indictment, he used officers as political campaign workers and on other occasions officers were instructed to drive leopold to sexual encounters in parking lots. county councilman jamie ben yoi said he was surprised when he heard the news and is disappointed in the entire police department. >> the police department has probably higher duty than anybody in the county to -- the chief law enforcement officers for the county. they take us very, very distinct oath than the rest of us. in this case i'm not sure the police met its own high standard of conduct. that's really troubling to me. >> now tonight spokesman for the chief told 11 news the police

did not believe it is appropriate to comment personally on the indictment adding any questions about this are best answered in a court of law. and now to commitment 2012. results are in for the republican washington state caucuses. mitt romney tonight's winner coming in with 36% of the vote so far. rick santorum and ron paul are in a close race for second while newt gingrich running is distant fourth. this is romney's fourth campaign triumph in a row and fresh show of fremping in a run-up to the big 10 state super tuesday contest next week. >> we need a president who knows the economy to fix the economy. >> this is a marathon, not a sprint. we're going to keep working. we're doing well. and we feel like this race is narrowing just like it should be. >> there are 419 delegates up for grabs in 10 states on super tuesday. more than a third of the total number needed to cinch the nomination. still to come on 11 news -- radio host rush limbaugh is continuing to talk about a female law student and her

>> a protest against anti-abortion legislation in virginia ended with 30 arrests today. hundreds gathered on capital square in richmond to protest a bill that passed the general assembly requiring an ultrasound before an abortion. they had a permit but were not allowed on the capital steps. police gave warning as some protesters moved to the steps and took many kicking and screaming. conservative radio commentator rush limbaugh has now apologized to the georgetown law student for insulting her. limbaugh suggested san drooflubling's support of contraception coverage was an attempt to force americans to pay for her sexual activity. in a statement he said he did not mean to attack her, he was trying to be humorous and chose

the wrong words. the apology comes after several advertisers pulled commercials from his show. residents in the town of tafts, florida, had a square as a grenade was found on the side of a street. orange county bomb squad detonated at the scene. nobody was hurt and snoil word where the grenade came from. still ahead -- what does it take to be a ravens' cheerleader? the grueling tryout process for the upcoming season. >> and we're noticing a couple pop-up showers moving through the southern area portions of the viewing area around cambridge. looking outside now, still relatively balmy. 49 at the airport, 52 at the harbor. insta- weather plus forecast right after

>> it's going to be another two weeks of waiting for hopefuls who tried out for the baltimore ravens cheerleadering squad. close to 250 men and women came to the downtown athletic club today but this is one day of a three-part tryout. those who make it today can be back tomorrow for another six hours triefouts. ravens' officials say being on the squad means a lot of hard work and dedication. >> it's a lifetime commitment, fitness, athleticism is very important as well as poise and talent. there's a lot required of these young ladies and men. >> team members will be announced on saturday, march 17. >> i just wanted show you guys this one more time, just to

reiterate how impressive it is, these storms that pass through the midwest and all the tornado and winds associated with them. official report for march 2 and today march 3 from the national weather service as far as reports of different types of phenomenon. we have 108 tornadoes, 301 situations of high winds and 441 reports of hail. that's unprecedented, especially for this time of year. as i said earlier, if we had numbers like this, we would expect them around may rather than right now in the begin of march. as far as our weather is concerned, nice night so far except for a couple stay showers in southern portions of the viewing area now. 52 downtown, 49 at the airport. annapolis at 53. cooler spots up in ocean city, they're at 49. and as you would expect way out west, coolest temperatures

frostburg, 34. our current weather stray showers moving through. they're part of the well-defined cold front and this is the same front the that brought severe weather to the midwest. we have a little bit of lake-effect snow on the back end of this. this will continue pushing into tomorrow and probably monday when it will finally get on out of here so there's a chance of frozen precipitation in one areas tomorrow morning. but it's certainly nothing to worry about. good news, a lot of high pressure behind it. once that gets to us and probably by midweek, we we start to see temperatures topping out around 65. maybe 68, maybe 70 by thursday. tell you about that in a minute. as far as the rest of the night is concerned, partly cloudy skies becoming mostly cloudy overnight. winds west 10 to 15 miles per hour. temperatures 34 to 40. relatively nice night. future cast showing us cloud

cover stays with us in the early morning hours. around this time chance to get frozen precip as this thing moves on out of here and cooler air behind it. chances don't be surprised if you see snakes here and there maybe sleet. this will move out as afternoon progresses. a couple stray shower possibilities as well as a little bit of snow. tomorrow's forecast, a.m. mix becoming partly sunny while temperatures 44 to 48. seven day, my favorite part, 30% chance in the morning and cooler monday and warming trend, 68 by thursday continue stays all the way until saturday. >> lowell, thank you. mardi gras may have been more than two weeks ago but celebration carried on tonight at the sheraton. our own silva was the fund-raiser for the event.
